Chapter 1 of Contract Marriage To The Coldhearted Tycoon

The loading icon spun on Adaline Hayes's tablet, mocking her with every rotation.

Three minutes to keynote. Two thousand attendees. One multimillion-dollar summit balanced on her shoulders.

She moved through the ballroom with surgical precision, weaving between sound technicians and caterers. The air was thick with expensive cologne and anticipation. Her jaw ached from smiling at clients who didn't know her name.

"Excuse me." She sidestepped a junior staffer dragging cables across her path, the rubber casing squeaking against polished concrete.

The venue network lagged. Again. Her fingers flew across the tablet, pulling up the manual override sequence. She reached the master switchboard, entered the emergency reset code.

The main display flickered.

Then it died.

Cold sweat bloomed at her temples. Adaline dropped to one knee, shoving aside a tangle of cables to reach the backup power cord. Her black pumps scraped against the floor, the leather scuffing.

The screen blazed back to life.

But it wasn't the keynote slide.

It was a live security feed. High-angle. Crystal clear. An executive suite.

Her executive suite.

No. Her fiancé's executive suite.

The floor tilted beneath her. Adaline stopped breathing.

She knew that desk. She knew that leather chair. She knew that charcoal suit jacket—the one she'd picked up from the dry cleaner three days ago, complaining about the price while the clerk rolled her eyes.

And she knew the man wearing it.

Chandler. Her fiancé of eight years.

And beneath him, sprawled across the mahogany, legs wrapped around his waist—Fallon Kirk.

The collective gasp from two thousand people hit Adaline like a physical wave. It rolled through the ballroom, gathering force, crashing against her back.

"Look at that," someone laughed. "Someone's getting fired today."

Adaline's fingers moved before her brain caught up. She grabbed the power cord and yanked it from the wall. The screen went black.

The silence was worse than the gasps.

She felt every eye in the room turn toward her. A thousand perfect strangers witnessing her humiliation. A thousand phones probably already recording.

Adaline stood up. Her legs held. She didn't know how.

She turned toward the exit, her heels striking the marble with sharp, unforgiving precision. Her vision was tunneling, darkening at the edges. Hot tears burned behind her eyes, demanding release.

Not here. Not in front of them.

She pushed through the double doors and burst into the corridor. The moment they swung shut behind her, she ran.

Her heels caught in the plush carpet. She stumbled, kicked them off, kept running. Bare feet slapped against cold marble. Her lungs burned.

She reached the VIP elevator bank and slammed the call button with the flat of her palm. Once. Twice. Seven times.

The doors slid open. She stepped inside, hit the button for the executive floor.

Chandler. Fallon. Eight years. Gone.

The elevator ascended, the floor numbers ticking up like a countdown to execution.

Ding.

The doors opened. A security guard stepped forward, raising his hand. "Ma'am, this floor is restricted—"

Adaline turned her head. One look.

The guard's hand dropped. He stepped aside.

She walked past him, past the reception desk, past the frosted glass doors with names she'd memorized over eight years. She stopped at the heavy oak door at the end of the hall.

Chandler's office.

She didn't knock.

The door swung open. Chandler stood at his desk, fumbling with the buttons of his white shirt. His collar was crooked. His hair was mussed. A smear of lipstick—Fallon's shade, a deep, blood-red crimson—stained the corner of his mouth.

Fallon sat on the edge of the desk, legs crossed, smoothing her designer skirt. She looked up at Adaline, a look of pure, unbothered triumph curling the corners of her painted mouth.

"Explain," Adaline said. Her voice echoed off the walls. She didn't recognize it.

Chandler's hands flew up. "Adaline, keep your voice down. This isn't—"

"Explain this to me, Chandler." She took a step forward. Her bare feet were silent on the hardwood.

"It's not what it looks like." He slipped into his smooth, practiced tone—the one he used to close billion-dollar deals. "It's a corporate merger tactic. The Cook-Vanderbilt Group needs this alliance. You don't understand the pressure I'm under."

He reached for her hand.

She slapped it away.

The crack of skin against skin rang through the office.

"Don't touch me."

Fallon laughed. The sound was light, musical, utterly unbothered. She slid off the desk and sauntered closer, looking Adaline up and down.

"Look at you. Barefoot. In your cheap department store suit." Fallon tilted her head, feigning sympathy. "Did you really think he was going to marry a nobody? You were convenient. That's all."

Adaline didn't flinch. She reached for her left hand. Her fingers found the engagement ring—the one Chandler had presented on a yacht in the Hamptons, promising forever.

She pulled it off. The diamond scraped her knuckle, drawing blood.

She threw it.

The ring struck Chandler's chest with a dull thud, bounced off his bespoke lapel, and rolled across the floor. It disappeared into the shadows beneath the leather sofa.

Chandler stared at her, horrified. "Adaline, stop making a scene. You're ruining everything."

"If you make a scene here," Fallon added, her voice sharpening, "I will personally make sure you're blacklisted from every consulting firm in this city. Kirk Capital owns half your clients. Including the ones in the ballroom downstairs."

Adaline looked at Fallon. Then at Chandler. Then at the dark space under the sofa where her engagement ring had vanished—like her future, swallowed whole.

A laugh clawed its way out of her throat. It was bitter and hollow and nothing like laughter.

"Eight years," she said. Her gaze locked onto Chandler's face, watching the color drain from it. "Consider it dead."

She turned her back on them both. She refused to let them see the tears spilling over her lashes. Her bare feet carried her out of the office, past the guard who wouldn't meet her eyes, into the elevator.

As the doors slid closed, her knees buckled. She collapsed against the cold metal wall, gasping for air, the world spinning around her.

Eight years. Gone in eight seconds.

She didn't know yet that this was only the beginning.
