Chapter 1 of When My Boyfriend Stepped Over Me to Save His Fake Heiress

I was thinking about indemnification clauses when the elevator doors opened.

That's the part that still gets me. Five years. Five years of loving Zane Crawford, and in the last moment before everything broke, my mind was on a contract.

The 34th floor hallway was empty at 7 p.m. Most people had already cleared out. I had my laptop bag on one shoulder and my phone in my hand, scrolling through the final clause language our client had flagged. The elevator dinged. The doors slid apart.

And there he was.

Zane was standing toward the back of the car, and his hands were on her waist. Not a casual touch. Not an accident. His left hand rested at the curve of her hip, and his right thumb was moving—slowly, deliberately—along the line of her jaw. Her face was tilted up toward his. Their mouths were maybe four inches apart.

I recognized her. Kensley Ruiz. The new intern from the acquisitions team. Twenty-three, maybe twenty-four. She wore a cream blouse I was pretty sure was a knockoff Chanel, and she had the kind of practiced poise that looked expensive until you stood close enough to notice the details.

For a second, nobody moved.

I watched Zane's thumb stop on her jaw. I watched his eyes find mine over her shoulder. I watched something flicker across his face—not guilt, exactly. More like calculation. Like he was already running numbers.

Five years. I paid off his car loan when he was between bonuses. I covered for him in the Hargrove presentation when his numbers were wrong. I planned a future in careful, hopeful detail, and I kept a photo of my parents on my desk angled so only I could see it, and I thought—I actually believed—

Kensley moved first.

She pulled away from Zane and lunged for the elevator panel, her fingers stabbing at buttons. All of them. Random floors, the door-close, the door-open, the emergency call button. I don't know if she was panicking or just buying herself a few seconds of noise and chaos. Maybe both.

The elevator shuddered.

Then it dropped.

Not a smooth descent. A lurch—a stomach-dropping, mechanical scream of metal—and then the emergency brakes caught us with a jolt that threw me into the side wall. The lights flickered twice and died.

Total darkness.

I know what people mean when they say darkness is a presence. I've known it since I was twelve years old, folded into the crushed backseat of my parents' car on an icy overpass, listening to my mother's breathing change. The dark doesn't just remove light. It removes the walls. It removes the ceiling. It makes the space smaller and smaller until your lungs stop believing there's air.

I couldn't breathe.

I slid down the wall. My back hit the floor and I felt the carpet under my palms and I told myself: count. Count the textures. Count the sounds. But there were eight people in this box and it was shrinking and my chest had locked up completely, just a fist squeezing tighter and tighter behind my sternum.

Somewhere above me, Zane's voice cut through the dark. Calm. Almost cheerful.

"Everyone stay easy. We're going to be fine." A pause. "For those of you who don't know—Kensley Ruiz is the CEO's daughter. The Medina Group. So let's make sure she's comfortable while we wait for rescue."

I heard fabric shift. His jacket. He was putting his jacket around her shoulders.

I was on the floor.

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely get my bag open. I found the tin by feel—small, round, the lid worn smooth from years of use. My therapist taught me this. Citrus grounds you. Pulls you back into your body. I got the lid open and pressed a curl of dried orange peel under my nose and inhaled, and for one thin second, I felt the fist in my chest loosen by half a degree.

Then Kensley screamed.

"Oh my God—" Her voice cracked into something ragged and theatrical. "Citrus. I'm—I'm severely allergic, I can't—someone help me, I can't breathe—"

She was clutching her throat. I couldn't see her, but I could hear the performance of it.

Zane's hand came out of the dark and hit mine.

The crack of it was sharp. The orange peel scattered. He shoved me backward—one hard push—and his voice dropped into something cold and quiet.

"Are you trying to kill her?"

I hit the wall. My shoulder took the impact. And then the first kick landed.

I don't know who threw it. In the dark, bodies are just pressure and weight and pain. I curled sideways and got my arm up and someone's shoe connected with my ribs and the air left my body completely. I heard Kensley's theatrical sobbing somewhere above me, and I heard the sounds of people moving, repositioning, choosing their side.

They had all done the math.

The Medina heiress was worth protecting. I was worth nothing.

I pressed my face against the carpet and I breathed through my teeth and I thought about the orange peel, scattered somewhere in the dark where I couldn't reach it, and I thought about my mother's breathing slowing down beside me a long time ago.

And I thought: remember this. Every single second of this. Remember it exactly.
