In the gripping mafia romance books sensation Blood and Silence, a tragic blizzard leads to a heartbreaking loss. When her husband Giordano abandons her for another woman, she demands a divorce. Now, this ruthless figure from billionaire romance novels is on his knees begging her not to go.

Chapter 1 of Blood and Silence

During a blizzard, three months pregnant, I waited for my husband to come and pick me up. But he never showed, and I lost the baby.

The next day, I saw a post from his crew liaison, Chiara Soriano.

Thanks to Gio's incredible care, both my baby and I are doing great.

The post included a photo of her ultrasound.

If this had been before, I would have lost it. I would have screamed, thrown things, torn the house apart until the walls shook. But this time, I simply typed a single word in the comments.

Congratulations.

I was done. I asked for a divorce. A severing of everything. The alliance. The name. The blood-bound union that had tied my life to his.

He broke down. Giordano Valente, a man whose soldiers never saw him flinch, dropped to his knees on the marble floor of our home and sobbed like a child, begging me to stay.

But I was already gone.

A sudden blizzard descended on the city that evening, the kind that turned the streets into a white, howling void. Even the news broadcasts had urged everyone to get home early, their warnings crackling through car radios and the small television mounted in the corner of the restaurant office where I'd been reviewing inventory. By the time I looked up from the ledgers and saw the world outside the frosted windows, it was already too late.

The snow came down in thick, relentless sheets. It buried the parked cars along the curb. It swallowed the streetlights whole.

I checked my phone and found a message from my husband, Giordano Valente, sent two hours ago.

It's coming down hard out there. Wait for me. I'll come get you.

Two hours. And Gio was still nowhere to be seen.

I gathered my coat and my bag and tried to call a car. The fact that he had even offered to pick me up felt like a gesture of penance, a small, calculated kindness meant to smooth over the silence that had calcified between us for the past week.

A few days before, it had been my mother's birthday. Gio had promised to come with me to her house for dinner. She lived in the old neighborhood, in the same narrow brownstone where I'd grown up, and she had been so pleased when I told her he was coming that she spent the entire day cooking. A proper Sunday spread. Braciole. Baked ziti with three cheeses. His favorite osso buco, the marrow bones roasted until they split. She'd even bought a bottle of Barolo she couldn't afford because Gio once mentioned he liked it.

He never showed.

He called late that evening and told me he'd been buried in work. That the operations on the territory had demanded his attention. Something urgent. Something unavoidable.

He was lying.

I'd seen Chiara Soriano's social media post that same night. The woman he'd brought on as his personal bookkeeper, his crew liaison, the one who managed the day-to-day logistics of his territory. The post was casual, almost girlish, paired with a photo of two movie tickets and a cup of gelato.

Gio said it wasn't safe for me to go to a late show alone, so he insisted on coming with me. So happy.

That night, we fought. I stood in the kitchen of our home, the home that smelled of cold marble and expensive leather and nothing like my mother's house, and I held up my phone so he could see the screen.

"My mother cooked for six hours, Gio. She waited for you. She set a place at the table with the good china. And you were at the movies." My voice was steady, but my hands were not. "How do you explain this?"

He got defensive immediately. His jaw tightened the way it always did when he felt cornered, and his voice took on that clipped, dismissive edge that I had grown to despise.

"Carolina, why are you making such a big deal out of this? Your mother has a birthday every year. But Chiara is a young woman, new to this city. She doesn't know anyone. She doesn't have protection. What if someone bothered her? It's not like it hasn't happened before..."

He trailed off. Even he could hear how thin it sounded. How pathetic. A Capo of the Valente Family, a man who commanded soldiers and ran a territory that generated millions, and the best excuse he could offer his pregnant wife was that his bookkeeper needed a chaperone to the cinema.

Furious and embarrassed by his own weakness, he turned on his heel and disappeared into the guest room. The door shut with a sound like a verdict.

We hadn't spoken since.
