Chapter 1 of Betrayed Bride of the Mafia King

"Marissa, we've arranged a blood-oath marriage for you." Her mother's voice crackled through the encrypted line, steady but tight with the kind of restraint that only came from holding back terror. "Your situation is getting worse every day. The threats are closing in. Only a sealed alliance with someone powerful enough can keep you protected. Can keep you alive."

Marissa sat alone in her dimly lit room on the second floor of the Ferraro estate, her gaze fixed on the shadowy corners where the faint amber glow of a single desk lamp couldn't reach. The phone rested against her ear, warm from the length of the silence that stretched between them, filling the air with an unspoken weight. She knew her mother was about to speak again, offering her a way out, as she always did.

"If you don't want this, I'll speak to your father and cancel everything. We won't force you," Isabel Valente finally said, her voice softening to something almost fragile.

But Marissa's lips parted, and when she answered, her voice was steady and unyielding, carved from something harder than the marble floors beneath her bare feet. "I'm willing, Mom. I'll go through with the arranged marriage."

There was a stunned silence on the other end of the line. Then her mother stammered in disbelief. "You... you agreed?"

"Yes. I agreed," Marissa repeated, her voice calm and devoid of any visible hesitation. "But I need time to wrap up some things with the Ombra Family first. Please start preparing for the ceremony."

She ended the call without asking a single question about the man her parents had chosen. She didn't care who he was or what he'd heard about the target on her back, only that he was willing to bind himself in blood to a woman everyone believed was already marked for death.

Though Marissa wasn't dying. Not yet. The Valente name, the ancient bloodline coursing through her veins, was more than any one person could carry unprotected. She was one of the last living heirs to one of the five founding Sicilian dynasties, and that legacy painted a target on her that grew larger with every passing month. Without the shield of a sealed marriage alliance to a man of equal or greater standing, the isolation and mounting threats would destroy her. The panic attacks had started six months ago. The assassination attempt, three months after that. She was growing weaker every day, not from illness, but from the relentless, suffocating pressure of being hunted.

The truth was, her mother had practically been begging her to find another man to marry for years now. Marissa had been promised to Caleb Ferraro since she was barely old enough to understand what the word arrangement meant. Eight years she'd given him. Eight years of loyalty, of standing at his side, of waiting for him to formalize what everyone in the Ombra Family already assumed was inevitable. But he refused. He always refused.

"I won't seal the marriage unless you give me an heir. We already agreed on that, didn't we?" That was his only condition, spoken with the casual cruelty of a man who knew he held all the leverage. But even after years of trying, she could not give him a child, and without the protection of a sealed union, her blood, her name, her very existence remained dangerously exposed.

Yet a month ago, Caleb had suddenly announced that a woman had come to the Family seeking refuge. She was Ivy, a girl with a tragic past. Her parents had already passed, she claimed. She was alone in the world. She had nowhere else to go and had to survive however she could, offering herself as a kept woman to whichever man in the Family would have her.

Marissa had pitied Ivy. She had to live such a life because her past was too dark, too scarred by loss. But she never expected what would come next.

An hour ago, before her mother's call, Caleb Ferraro had stood in the grand salon of the estate, crystal glass raised, and made his announcement to every soldier, associate, and made man gathered beneath the iron chandeliers:

"Ivy is carrying my child. My heir."

The words had landed like a bullet between Marissa's ribs. She never expected this. She had believed Ivy was there for the other men in the Family, the soldiers and associates who had no wives, no prospects. She never imagined that Ivy had already been warming the bed of the Don himself. Her partner. The man she had given eight years of her life to.

Just as she set the phone down on the nightstand, the muffled pulse of music from the floors below bled through the walls of her room. The faint sound of glasses clinking and laughter filtered upward, distorted by distance into something ghostly. Downstairs, Caleb Ferraro, her childhood sweetheart and the man she'd loved for eight years, was hosting a celebration for Ivy. Toasting the woman who carried his heir while Marissa sat in the dark above them like a secret no one wanted to acknowledge.

A soft knock at her door interrupted her thoughts, followed by the quiet creak of it opening. Ivy entered with a smug smile, her eyes sparkling with triumph beneath the hallway light that spilled in behind her. She stepped closer, the click of her heels deliberate against the hardwood, her hands resting on the slight swell of her belly as if to remind Marissa of her failure.

"Marissa," Ivy began in a sweet, honeyed voice, the kind of voice that men believed and women saw straight through, "won't you come down and join us? We're celebrating my pregnancy, and I'd really love to have you there."

Marissa's gaze hardened. Beneath Ivy's innocent expression, she saw the cunning behind those eyes, a slyness that was impossible to miss. The way her fingers splayed possessively across her stomach. The way her chin tilted upward, just slightly, as if she were already measuring herself for the title of La Donna. "I have work to finish, Ivy," Marissa replied, her tone icy enough to frost glass. "Go enjoy your party."

Ivy's smile didn't falter. Instead, she took a step closer, close enough that the cloying sweetness of her perfume invaded the space between them, and her voice dropped to a whisper. "I suppose you wouldn't want to be there. After all, I'm giving Caleb something you never could. He'll finally have the heir he deserves."

The taunt sliced through Marissa's composure like a stiletto drawn across silk. Her fingers curled into fists at her sides, nails biting into her palms, but she refused to let Ivy see the hurt. Instead, she met the woman's gaze with steely determination, her voice low and precise. "Is that what you need to feel secure? Rubbing your pregnancy in my face? Pathetic."

Ivy's eyes narrowed, and the mask of sweetness slipped, revealing something cold and sharp underneath, something that didn't belong on the face of a helpless orphan. "Maybe Caleb wouldn't have looked elsewhere if you weren't so... defective. Barren."

The slap cracked through the air before Marissa even realized she'd moved.

The sound was sharp as a gunshot in the quiet room. Ivy's head snapped to the side, a red imprint blooming across her cheek like a brand. For a moment, there was nothing. Stunned, ringing silence. The music from downstairs seemed to stop, as if the entire estate had drawn a collective breath.

Then the door burst open, and Caleb Ferraro strode in.

He filled the doorframe the way men of his position always did, broad-shouldered and radiating authority he hadn't earned but had inherited like the family crest on his signet ring. His eyes blazed with fury. He didn't look at Marissa first. He went immediately to Ivy, who clutched her cheek and whimpered against his chest, her shoulders trembling with perfectly calibrated fragility.

"Marissa!" Caleb's voice was like a whip crack. "What the hell is wrong with you?"

Marissa stood tall, her spine rigid, her face expressionless as carved stone. "Ask her what she said to me."

"I don't need to ask," Caleb snapped, his eyes cold and flat as they bored into her. He held Ivy closer, one hand cupping the back of her head protectively. "I know you. I know your bitterness. You can't stand that Ivy is giving me an heir. Something you failed to do."

Her heart twisted painfully, a deep, wrenching ache that radiated outward from her sternum and settled behind her eyes. But she refused to let the tears fall. She would not give either of them that satisfaction. Not in this room. Not tonight. "If that's what you believe, Caleb," she said quietly, and her voice did not waver, "then you never knew me at all."

He didn't respond. His attention had already shifted entirely to Ivy, his thumb gently brushing a strand of dark hair from her face, his voice dropping to a low murmur of reassurance that Marissa could no longer make out. The sight was more painful than any of his words. More painful than the announcement downstairs, more painful than the laughter still drifting up through the floorboards. The man she had loved, the one who had promised to stand by her side forever, who had sworn on his father's name that she would be his, had chosen someone else. And in doing so, he had torn their history apart as casually as ripping a photograph in half.

As Caleb led Ivy away, one arm wrapped around her shoulders, whispering reassurances against her temple, Marissa closed the door behind them. The latch clicked with a soft, final sound.

She leaned against the door, the cool wood pressing against her shoulder blades, and closed her eyes. Memories flashed before her in the darkness. Caleb at seventeen, grinning at her across his father's dinner table. Caleb at twenty, pressing his lips to her forehead and swearing she was the only one. Caleb promising her a future, a family, a name beside his own. Laughter. Loyalty. Promises that now lay in ruins at her feet like shattered crystal, glittering and worthless.

The music played on below her.

Marissa opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling.

She did not cry.
