Chapter 1 of Betrayed at the Theater: My Husband's Choice

Everyone praised Scott for being the perfect, devoted husband.

Two months after my knee surgery, he bought tickets to my favorite movie.

He promised we would celebrate my recovery together.

But an hour before the show, he texted saying the theater's projector broke and the screening was canceled.

I was disappointed but decided to check the theater app anyway.

The screening was on time, and my ticket had just been scanned at the entrance.

I took a cab and wheeled myself into the dark theater.

Scott wasn't alone.

He was sitting in the accessible row I had booked.

Beside him was his young colleague, Mia, resting her slightly sprained ankle right on his lap.

He was gently massaging her leg.

When I wheeled up to them, the annoyance on his face was unmistakable.

"What are you doing here?" Scott hissed, glancing around nervously. "Mia actually got hurt today. You're basically healed."

He pointed to the steep stairs leading to the regular seats.

"Just walk up there and find an empty spot," he ordered. "Don't make a scene over a chair."

"Your ticket was scanned almost an hour ago, ma'am."

The usher tapped the side of his monitor and turned it toward me. My reservation number glowed on the screen beside two green check marks.

I tightened my hands around the rims of my wheelchair. "Check it again. My husband told me this showing was canceled because the projector broke."

The usher glanced past me toward the crowded lobby. "Projector's working. Theater Four, Row W. Two guests entered on this reservation forty-three minutes ago."

For a second I heard nothing but the popcorn machine and the dull roar of people moving around me.

Scott had put these tickets in our shared calendar a week earlier with three heart emojis and a message: Anniversary make-up date. No excuses. I had believed him. I had spent half the morning wrestling myself into a silk blouse while my right knee throbbed beneath its brace. The car accident six months earlier had shredded two ligaments and damaged a nerve badly enough that I still used a wheelchair outside the house. I could stand for transfers and take a few steps with support, but stairs were not safe.

At noon, Scott had texted that the theater canceled the show. He told me to stay home and rest.

Apparently, only one part of that message had been true. He wanted me home.

"Let me through," I said.

The usher hesitated. "I can't promise there's still accessible space."

"I paid for accessible space."

He unhooked the velvet rope.

The heavy doors of Theater Four closed behind me, swallowing the lobby noise. Trailers exploded across the screen while I pushed up the carpeted incline. My shoulders burned before I reached the flat landing at the back.

Row W.

My reserved wheelchair bay.

A woman had stretched both legs across it.

Scott sat in the companion seat beside her. Her white sneakers rested in his lap while his thumbs worked slow circles around her bare ankle. He leaned close enough that his mouth nearly brushed her hair when he said something that made her laugh.

I stopped behind them.

The woman flicked Scott's ear. "You're spoiling me, Doctor."

I cleared my throat.

Scott's head snapped up. His hands flew away from her leg.

"Lena."

I rolled closer. "How's the broken projector?"

His face changed in stages: shock, calculation, then irritation. The irritation hurt more than the surprise.

"What are you doing here?" he whispered. "You're supposed to be resting."

"I came to see why our anniversary tickets were used without me."

The woman slowly lowered her feet. She was younger than me by several years, with glossy dark hair and the pale-blue resident badge from Scott's hospital clipped to her sweater.

"I'm Mia," she said. "Scott and I work together. I twisted my ankle after rounds."

"And the emergency treatment was a movie?"

Mia gave a soft, embarrassed laugh. "He said sitting somewhere dark might distract me from the pain."

Scott stood. "Don't make this ugly. Mia had a terrible shift and then got hurt. You hate crowds since the accident anyway. I thought you would be more comfortable at home."

"You thought lying would make me comfortable?"

"I was trying to spare your feelings."

There it was, the clinical voice he used when a patient was being difficult.

I looked at Mia's sneakers, then at my wheelchair bay. "Move your legs."

Mia pulled them closer to her chest, but Scott stepped into the aisle instead of helping clear the space.

"The movie already started," he said. "There are open seats higher up."

I stared at him. "Higher up requires stairs."

"It's six steps, Lena. You can use the rail. I'll help you transfer."

The trailer soundtrack boomed through the room, but the words landed with perfect clarity.

Six steps.

My orthopedic surgeon had warned me that one bad twist could undo months of reconstruction. Scott knew that. He had sat beside me when the surgeon explained it.

Mia touched his sleeve. "Scott, I can move."

"No, you can't," he said immediately. "Your ankle is swollen."

I looked down at the rigid brace running from my thigh to my shin. "And mine is decorative?"

His jaw tightened. "Don't weaponize your injury."

Something inside me went very still.

For months, I had mistaken his impatience for stress. When he sighed at loading the chair into the car, I blamed his surgical schedule. When he stopped joining my therapy appointments, I told myself his patients needed him. When he began taking calls in the hallway after midnight, I accepted that residents had emergencies.

Now I watched him shield Mia's mildly sprained ankle from six steps he expected me to climb on a reconstructed knee.

"Those two a.m. calls," I said. "Were they hospital emergencies?"

Mia looked at Scott, then away.

"Department scheduling gets complicated," she murmured.

Scott's expression hardened. "This is not the place."

"You made it the place when you brought her on our anniversary date."

A couple in the next row turned around. Scott noticed and lowered his voice.

"You are embarrassing yourself. Go home. We'll talk later."

"No. You go."

He blinked. "Excuse me?"

"The reservation is in both our names. The accessible bay is mine. Take Mia somewhere else."

Mia shifted as if to stand, and Scott put a hand on her shoulder.

"Stay," he told her.

Then he looked at me with open annoyance.

"Lena, I am not dragging an injured resident through a crowded theater because you're jealous. Transfer into one of the seats or leave."

I had spent three years making excuses for that man. I had packed his meals before dawn, edited his fellowship applications, and used my own savings when his student-loan payment hit the same week as rent. After the accident, I had believed marriage meant he would carry me through the season when I could no longer carry him.

Instead, he was asking me to risk my knee so another woman would not have to move her feet.

I reached for my wheel rims.

Before I could turn, a deep voice sounded behind me.

"She doesn't have to move."

Scott looked over my shoulder.

A tall man in a black overcoat stood at the edge of the landing, one hand resting on the folded companion chair beside the wheelchair bay. His gaze moved from Mia's sneakers to my brace, then settled on Scott.

"Those seats are reserved for people who need them," he said. "So either clear the space or I'll get the manager to do it for you."

For the first time that night, Scott looked uncertain.

And for the first time in months, someone had seen exactly what was happening without asking me to explain why it hurt.
