Chapter 1 of Betrayal Under the Penthouse Lights

"Sign it."

I slid the divorce papers across the marble island.

Alexander pressed two fingers to his temple. The morning light filtering through the penthouse windows seemed to worsen his hangover. He glanced at the bold title on the first page.

"Divorce?" He scoffed, his voice rough. "Just over this little thing?"

I nodded once.

"You're being ridiculous, Evelyn."

"Am I?" I asked.

"It was just a business dinner."

"Business dinners don't usually end with a stranger's red lipstick pressed into your collar."

Alexander slammed his hand flat against the counter. "I told you last night. We are done talking about this."

"You didn't tell me anything last night," I corrected him. "I waited on the couch until three in the morning. When I asked who you went to see, you punished me."

"I didn't punish you."

"I handed you a glass of warm milk." I pointed to the hardwood floor near the fridge. "You took it. Then you opened your fingers. You watched it shatter."

"It slipped."

"The shards cut your hand," I reminded him. "You didn't even flinch. You just looked at me and said, 'Evelyn, you've crossed the line.'"

He glared at me. "You are suffocating me."

A small shadow moved in my periphery. Theo dragged his wooden step-stool to the stainless steel sink.

He held his favorite plastic cup. Without a word, our five-year-old son tipped it over. The white milk splashed against the metal and swirled down the drain.

"Theo, what are you doing?" I asked.

He turned around. His face was a perfect mask of childish innocence. "Mommy, Daddy isn't drinking it. I don't want to either."

My chest tightened. A dull ache spread behind my ribs. I picked up the plate of fresh toast I had just made and set it on the dining table.

"Sit down and eat your breakfast."

Theo climbed into his chair. He stared at the golden-brown bread for a long second. Then, he shoved the plate away. The ceramic scraped loudly against the marble tabletop.

"No."

"You need to eat before kindergarten."

"Grandma says you'll secretly put nuts in it," Theo declared. "She says I'll die."

Alexander didn't look up from his tablet. He didn't say a word to defend me.

I stared at my son. He had Alexander's sharp jawline, his thick dark hair, his piercing gray eyes. They were identical in every way, right down to the cruelty.

"I made this toast myself," I said. "There are no nuts."

"Grandma says you don't know how to take care of me! You're a bad mom."

I gripped the back of the dining chair. My knuckles turned white against the dark wood.

"Alexander," I said. "Are you going to let him speak to me like that?"

"Leave my mother out of this," Alexander muttered, swiping on his screen. "Victoria is just protective."

"Protective?" A bitter laugh escaped my throat. "Two years ago, your mother gave the nutritionist a week off. She left a bowl of mixed nuts on the coffee table."

"We've been over this."

"Theo was three," I pushed on, my voice rising to fill the massive kitchen. "His throat closed. He stopped breathing."

Alexander finally looked at me. "He's fine now."

"Because I ran barefoot down three flights of stairs with him in my arms!" I shouted. "I bled on the pavement screaming for a cab. You were in a board meeting. You ignored seven of my calls."

"I was securing the European merger!"

"I sat in the emergency room alone until the sun came up," I whispered, the anger draining into pure exhaustion. "I know his allergies better than anyone in this family. But in this house, I'm just the idiot who doesn't know how to raise a child."

Theo covered his ears. "Stop yelling!"

I released the chair. The wood felt cold against my palms.

I picked up my silver pen. I flipped to the final page of the settlement agreement.

"I'm done fighting," I said.

I signed my name. Evelyn Whitmore. Soon to be just Evelyn again.

I slid the thick packet back across the island.

Alexander frowned, his eyes scanning the fresh ink. "What is this?"

"I'm giving you full custody of Theo."

Alexander froze. The tablet slipped from his hand, clattering onto the counter. "What?"

"I'm also transferring my half of this Upper East Side penthouse directly into Theo's name. I don't want your money."

"You're crazy," Alexander said. He tossed the papers aside. "You're throwing a tantrum. You expect me to beg you to stay?"

I walked to the hallway closet. I pulled out a single gray suitcase. I had packed it at four in the morning while he slept off his liquor.

"You always told me it's better to do things cleanly," I said.

Alexander's jaw clenched. I was throwing his own ruthless corporate motto right back in his face.

I rolled the suitcase to the front foyer. The wheels hummed against the floorboards.

Theo was already back in front of the television, watching a bright, noisy cartoon.

"Theo," I called out.

He didn't turn around. "I'm not eating the toast!"

"I won't be picking you up from kindergarten anymore," I told the back of his head. "Remember not to go with strangers."

He ignored me.

I opened the heavy oak door and stepped out. The morning mist hung heavy over Manhattan, blurring the skyline. The elevator arrived with a soft chime. I stepped inside and pressed the lobby button. I didn't look back.

Two hours later, I handed my boarding pass to the gate agent at JFK.

"Flight 402 to San Diego," she said, scanning the barcode. "Have a safe trip."

"Thank you." I walked down the jet bridge, my phone switched to airplane mode.

I didn't know that back in our penthouse, Alexander was still standing in the middle of the living room.

He walked toward the kitchen island to grab his coffee. His bare foot pressed down on something sharp.

He winced, lifting his heel. A jagged shard of broken glass from last night's milk glass was stuck to his skin. I hadn't swept it up. For the first time in nine years, I hadn't cleaned up his mess.

Alexander pulled the glass free. A single drop of blood hit the floor.

He looked around the massive apartment. The silence was absolute. It pressed against his eardrums, terrifyingly quiet.

He stared at the signed divorce papers on the counter. He traced my signature with his thumb.

He had truly believed I would just throw a temper tantrum, walk around the block, and come back to heat up his milk like I always did.

But I was already gone.

My plane lifted into the clouds. I turned my phone back on to check the time.

A new message popped up on the screen from an unknown number.

*Did you really think you could just leave the Whitmore family without consequences, Evelyn?*
