Chapter 1 of Best Friend Comes From Ten Years Later

My best friend, Lainey, traveled through time, but she didn't save me.

Lainey and I had known each other since birth. We were like real sisters and were inseparable every day.

When she seriously claimed she had traveled back from ten years later, my first thought wasn't to check her forehead for a fever but to ask, "What are the winning numbers for the Union Lotto ball this week?"

Lainey paused for two seconds and replied, "I didn't check."

I playfully knocked her on the head. "How could you come here with nothing?"

With her arms crossed, she defended herself, "Who would think to check the winning lottery numbers from ten years ago? Don't be unreasonable, Winnie!"

After a brief standoff, she slumped down like a deflated balloon. "Winnie, I need your help."

It turned out that Lainey came to save her husband.

Her husband had signed a terrible contract this year, plunging them into an endless nightmare.

"I have to stop him from signing that contract," she said.

I nodded, pretending to understand. "What can I do?"

She explained, "George doesn't know me right now, and I need your husband's help. They've been close friends for years, and no one else can assist."

As a recent college graduate, I blushed at the mention of "your husband."

I grabbed her arm and asked, "My husband must be Daniel, right?"

Lainey glared at me. "It's Edwin."

After a moment of thought, I admitted, "I don't recognize that name."

Lainey replied, "You two have known each other since college. Edwin said he's had a crush on you for seven years, which means it was right from your freshman year."

I was completely confused. I had no memory of him.

As I pondered, Lainey suddenly exclaimed, "Who did you say? Daniel?"

She gripped my shoulders and stared into my eyes.

"Daniel is a scummy guy. He's a womanizer and almost drove you to depression..." she sighed.

I stared at her in disbelief.

Daniel was the dream guy of our college days. He was handsome, fit, academically excellent, and a talented singer who won first place in a city competition.

When he chose to be with me, I felt like I'd hit the jackpot, imagining a bright future.

But now, Lainey was shattering that illusion.

"He's not just cheating on you. He's manipulating you," Lainey said seriously.

I whispered defensively, "But..."

We had only been dating for two months. Breaking up now felt wrong.

Lainey interrupted, "He'll cheat you out of everything and leave you penniless."

That sobered me up instantly.

I could tolerate emotional betrayal, but financial betrayal was a different story.

At that moment, a message from Daniel appeared on my phone.

[Baby, what are you doing? Let's have dinner together tonight.]

Lainey grunted coldly, and I panicked, typing back.

[Let's break up. We are not suitable.]

It was less than a month before that contract was signed.

According to Lainey, her husband, George, was working part-time at a convenience store.

After locating it, we rushed over.

Through the glass window, I saw a boy in a simple white T-shirt sitting at the cash register, absorbed in a book.

He was so serious that it seemed as if the whole world had nothing to do with him.

Just as I was about to ask Lainey if this was George, I noticed her tearful eyes, on the verge of tears.

I quickly handed her a tissue, saying, "Hold it in, be strong."

After saying that, I pulled her into the store.

There weren't many customers. George looked up when we entered but showed no reaction, not even a "welcome."

"Your husband's professionalism needs improvement," I remarked softly.

Lainey punched me. "He's not a doorman!"

I inhaled, catching a faint sandalwood scent surrounded me from all directions.

Lainey nudged me, "There, your husband."

Though I had accepted Edwin as my husband after our talk last night, hearing those words again still stirred something in me.

I turned my head carefully.

I saw a profile as delicate as a sculpture with fair skin, slightly curled eyelashes, and an undeniable beauty radiating from his features.

As if sensing my burning gaze, Edwin suddenly turned to look at me.

"Bang!"

With a loud crash, the kettle in Edwin's hand fell to the ground.

His face flushed, the scarlet creeping from his neck to his cheeks, and his breathing quickened.

"What's wrong?" George rushed over.

Edwin grabbed a mop and started cleaning the water stains on the floor.

Lainey approached George, asking, "Is there still a part-time job here?"

George ignored her and walked to the counter.

Instead, it was Edwin, whose face was red to his ears, who replied.

"It seems like there's no shortage of people."

His eyes wandered around and refused to stay on me.

Lainey pinched me, urging me to speak up.

"Can you help me? I really need this job."

I stepped forward, and when Edwin looked up, I noticed a spark in his eyes that I found him endearing.

Under my sincere gaze, Edwin finally relented, "I... will ask for you."

After saying that, he quickly picked up the mop and left.

I stifled a laugh, only to see Lainey staring at the door in horror.

She asked, "Why is he here?"

I was confused, "Who?"

I followed her gaze to see a tall figure approaching, looking straight at me.

A thought suddenly popped into my mind.

Could Daniel be following me?
