Chapter 1 of After My Mate Publicly Released Our Bond

He pulled onto the shoulder at 9:47 at night, forty minutes into a four-hour drive, with my father dying in a Boston bedroom and the healers saying weeks, maybe less.

The phone had buzzed thirty seconds earlier. I saw the name light up the dashboard. Raven.

I watched his jaw. That's how you learn a man after five years—you stop listening to what he says and you read his face like a weather report. His jaw set. Verdict already reached. Sentence already passed.

"Jax." My voice came out flat. "Don't."

The tires crunched onto gravel. He put the car in park and looked at the steering wheel, not at me. Never at me. Not once at the mark on my neck, the one he put there himself with his teeth on a spring night when he swore he'd never let me stand in the cold.

"She's alone out at the cabin," he said. "There's a rogue sighting near her fence line."

"My father can't hold a spoon anymore."

"It's one hour, Gianna." He reached across me and popped my door. The winter air came in like a slap. "I'll send a pack car. Twenty minutes, tops. You'll be in Boston by two."

I got out. That's the part I'll think about later—that I got out. That my body did it before my pride could stop it, because five years teaches you where the argument ends.

I stood on the gravel and the taillights pulled away and got small and then got gone.

And here is what the bond did.

It didn't hurt. That was the thing. I had prepared myself for the hurt, the way you brace for a needle. Instead the mark on my neck just went cool. A slow, even cold, like a stone losing the sun. Through it I could feel him—his wolf turned east, straining toward her, humming with purpose. Not guilty. Not torn. *Relieved.*

Seven times.

The first time I cried in a diner bathroom for an hour. The sixth time I cried in the car. This time something inside my chest went quiet, the way a bone goes quiet after it's already broken.

I pressed two fingers to the mark. Cold as a coin.

And down under my ribs, in the place that had been empty my whole life—where every other wolf my age had found a second heartbeat at thirteen, at fifteen, at eighteen, and I had found nothing, and Ironveil had quietly decided what that made me—something moved. Not a voice. Not a name. A vibration, low and dangerous, too deep to hear. I felt it in my sternum like a truck passing underground.

I didn't call the pack car.

I called Freya.

"Route 9," I said. "Mile marker 47."

A pause. One breath. "Gigi."

"He left again."

"I'm coming." No questions. No *what happened.* Just tires already moving somewhere in the dark, four states of loyalty compressed into two words.

She got there in fifty-one minutes. Delta of Silvercrest, doing ninety in a beat-up Subaru with a coffee cup in the console. She looked at my face through the windshield for exactly two seconds. Then she leaned over, shoved the door open, cranked the heat to full, and drove.

We didn't talk. Somewhere past Worcester she said, "Your dad's going to be so happy to see you," and I said, "Yeah," and that was the whole conversation.

He was. He called me Peach and held my hand and asked where Jaxon was, and I said the pack needed him, and my father nodded slowly like a man who has read a thousand faces and was choosing, for my sake, not to read mine.

***

Two days later it was Christmas Eve, and I stood in the Ironveil great hall in a green dress I'd picked out in October, because I was still, despite everything, the Luna.

The hall smelled like pine and candle wax. Two hundred wolves. Garlands on the rafters. Jaxon at the front in a dark suit, reading the solstice blessing off a card, and me three steps behind him where the Luna stands.

His phone lit up in his hand.

I saw it from where I was standing. I saw the name. I saw the little photo she'd set for herself, and I saw his shoulders change.

"Raven's fallen," he said, not to me. To the room. "Her ankle. She's alone."

Somebody in the third row made a small sound.

And then he turned, and he looked at me for the first time in two days, and he said it in the flat, administrative voice of a man signing a form.

"I, Jaxon Barnes, Alpha of Ironveil, temporarily release Gianna Morrison from our bond—"

"Jaxon." My voice didn't shake. "Don't you dare."

"—until such time as I reinstate it."

The mark on my neck went ice.

Then it went hollow. That's the only word. A door closing on an empty room, from the other side, and me on the wrong side of it.

My knees hit the ceremony floor.

Two hundred wolves watched me go down in a green dress on Christmas Eve. Nobody moved. Not the Beta. Not the healer. Not one of the women who'd sat in my kitchen.

And Jaxon was already through the doors.
