Chapter 1 of After My Mate Humiliated Me, the Lycan Chose Me

I lit the last candle at seven-fifteen.

The dining room of the Shadowridge pack house looked like something out of a magazine—white linen, the good silver, a bottle of the wine Beckham liked. I had cooked everything myself. Steak, the way he took it. Roasted potatoes. A small chocolate cake from the bakery on Fern Street because five years ago, on the night of our mating ceremony, he had eaten two slices of a cake just like it and told me it was the best thing he had ever tasted.

I wore the dark blue dress. He had said once, a long time ago, that blue looked good on me.

I checked the clock. Seven-thirty. Then eight.

My wolf, Wren, stirred faintly in my chest. She had been thin and quiet for three years now, ever since the transfusion, but tonight she was awake. She could feel him coming.

*Ever,* she whispered. *He smells wrong.*

The front door opened at eight-nineteen.

Beckham walked in without taking off his coat. He stopped in the doorway of the dining room and looked at the candles, the cake, the dress. His face did not change. And then the scent hit me—his own, dark cedar and smoke, and underneath it, cloying and unmistakable, Nicole's perfume. On his collar. On his skin.

I stood up slowly. I did not know yet what he had come to say. I only knew my hands had gone cold.

"Beckham."

"Sit down, Everleigh."

His voice had that low register he used at pack council. Alpha tone. He almost never used it on me in our own home.

I did not sit down.

He closed the door behind him. And then his aura unfolded—the full weight of it, the pressure that made ranked wolves drop their eyes—and pushed against me like a hand on my throat.

"Nicole is pregnant," he said. Flat. Like reading a weather report. "The pup is mine. I've made my decision."

The room tilted. I gripped the back of the chair.

"I, Beckham Vale, Alpha of Shadowridge Pack—" His eyes never left mine. "—reject you, Everleigh Mills, as my mate. From this night the bond is severed. Pack law grants thirty days. After that it is finished."

Something inside my chest tore.

It was not a metaphor. It was a physical thing, a wire of white heat pulling itself out through my ribs, taking pieces with it as it went. Wren threw her head back somewhere deep inside me and howled, and the sound was so full of grief that I nearly went to my knees.

I didn't.

I held on to the chair and I made my spine straight and I looked at the man who had carried me out of a rogue kill zone when I was six years old, and I said, "I accept."

His jaw moved. Just once.

"That's all?"

"What else is there."

He stood there another moment, like he had expected me to beg. When I didn't, he turned and walked back out into the hall. The front door closed quietly. Not slammed. That was almost worse.

I blew out the candles one by one. The cake went into the trash still in its box.

---

Four days later I went to the Pack Registry Office to file the separation papers.

I had not slept. My wolf was so faint I could barely feel her, and the place in my chest where the bond used to sit felt like a wound that had been packed with salt. But I put on a clean sweater and I drove myself down to the little brick building on Ash Street and I pushed open the door.

Beckham was already there.

Nicole was on his arm.

She was wearing a soft cream dress cut to show off the small, deliberate curve of her belly, and her hand rested on it like a signature. She was smiling at the clerk. Beckham had his hand at the small of her back. In this office. In the same room where five years ago a different clerk had witnessed the mating record and slid a copy across the desk and said *congratulations, Luna.*

Something very cold and very clean went through me.

I walked across the room. Nicole saw me first. Her smile got wider.

I didn't look at her.

"Beckham."

He turned.

I slapped him.

The silver ring on my right hand—the plain, practical one I had worn every day for years—caught his lip and split it open. He jerked back. A thin dark line of blood welled up. The silver hissed faintly against his skin, and I saw the burn bloom under it, and I did not feel sorry.

"You brought her here," I said. Quiet. Not shaking. "To this office. On this errand. In front of these people."

He didn't answer.

"You are not a man," I said. "You are a coward with a title."

The clerk had frozen behind her desk. Two other witnesses had gone still by the window. Nicole's mouth had opened in a small, shocked O that I did not entirely believe.

I took the papers from the clerk's hand. I signed every page without reading a single word. I put the pen down. I walked out.

I did not cry in the car.

---

The days after that had a strange, muffled quality, like living underwater.

Beckham could not strip my Luna title. Pack law protected it until the thirty days were up. So he did the next thing. He simply stopped enforcing it.

Travis started routing the pack correspondence around me. I would go to check the morning briefings and find the folder empty; later I would learn the meeting had already happened in Beckham's study without me. Boone began taking household orders from Nicole—I heard him in the kitchen one afternoon, *yes ma'am,* casual as breathing, and Nicole's little laugh afterward. Pack members I had known for five years walked past me in the corridors with their eyes on the floor. Not hostile. Just… done with me. As if I had already left, and they were only waiting for my body to catch up.

On the fifth day I packed a suitcase and moved the rest of the way into my apartment.

It was a small place, two rooms and a kitchenette, on the third floor of a walk-up ten minutes from the pack house. I had rented it two years into the mating and never told Beckham why. He had assumed coldness. It was not coldness. It was the only door in the world that locked from my side.

I put my clothes in the closet. I lined up my toiletries on the bathroom shelf. I set my laptop on the small kitchen table and opened the drawer where I kept the sketches—the ones nobody had ever seen, the territory layouts and the ridge-line houses and the little chapel of stone I had drawn one winter when I was very lonely.

I looked at them for a long time.

Twenty-five days left.

Wren stirred in my chest, faint as a candle flame in wind.

*We can go,* she whispered. *Ever. We can go.*

I closed the drawer. I put my forehead down on the table.

And then, very quietly, in a room that belonged to no one but me, I let myself breathe.
