Chapter 1 of After My Mate’s Betrayal, I Bonded with the Lycan Prince

The bond broke at exactly 10:47 p.m., mid-sentence, while Drake was still smiling.

I felt it the way you feel a tooth pulled without anesthetic—the mark on my neck went ice-cold first, then hollow, like someone had carved out a piece of bone and left the wound open to winter air. My wolf, silent for six years, slammed against the inside of my skull with a scream I couldn't voice. The sound stayed trapped behind my teeth.

"I, Drake Calloway, Alpha of the Ironclaw Pack, reject you, Leighton Ashford, as my mate and Luna."

He said it from the dais, in front of three hundred witnesses. The formal rejection vow. Every word pronounced with the careful deliberateness of someone who had rehearsed. His hand was already reaching for Serena before he finished the sentence—Beta Holt's daughter, standing beside him in a dress the exact shade of Ironclaw crimson, her wolf present and her rank appropriate and her smile thin with victory.

The packhouse went silent. I felt my aura dim—actually felt it, like a light going out under my skin—and every wolf in the hall turned to watch. Waiting for me to collapse. Waiting for me to beg.

I didn't.

I stood. My legs worked. My hands were steady. The ceremonial Luna pendant sat on the table in front of me—white gold, Ironclaw crest, the thing I was supposed to wear at the mating ceremony that would now never happen. I picked it up. The metal was still warm from where it had been resting against the polished wood.

I slid it across the table toward Serena with one deliberate push.

It stopped exactly in front of her plate. She blinked down at it like I'd just handed her a live snake.

"Congratulations," I said. My voice came out level. Clear. I looked at Drake—three seconds, no more, no less—and his expression flickered with something I didn't have time to name. "I hope you're very happy together."

Then I turned. The crowd parted. No one spoke. My heels clicked on the stone floor all the way to the doors—twenty-seven steps, I counted every one—and the cold night air hit my face like a fist when I stepped outside.

The doors closed behind me. I kept walking.

My car was parked at the edge of the clearing, away from the main lot where the pack's vehicles clustered like a herd. I got in. Started the engine. My hands found the wheel and gripped hard enough that my knuckles went white.

I made it three miles down the highway before my eyes filled.

It happened all at once—the cold hollow of the severed mark burning against my neck, my wolf scratching weakly at the inside of my mind like an animal in a box, and the reality that I had just walked out of six years of my life with nothing to show for it except a scar that would never fully heal.

I pulled over. Let myself feel it for exactly sixty seconds. Then I wiped my face, locked it away, and did the math.

Drake's rejection had just destabilized Leland's most critical alliance. My grandfather—Alpha of the Blood Crescent Pack, the man who had spent my entire life treating me like a territorial asset—would move within forty-eight hours to broker me as a pawn in whatever arrangement salvaged his leverage. He'd invoke pack law. He'd call it duty. He'd make it sound reasonable.

I had one counter.

I pressed the accelerator down and turned the car toward Silverpine Estate.

The drive took four hours. I watched the sky lighten from black to gray to the pale gold of early dawn, the forest thickening on either side of the road as I crossed into Northern Territory. My wolf had gone quiet again—exhausted, maybe, or just broken—but I could still feel the faint echo of her presence, a weight behind my ribs that hadn't been there before the rejection.

The Silverpine gates opened without challenge. Someone had called ahead. I parked in the circular drive and got out, still cold from the drive, the severed bond a visible scar at my neck that I didn't bother covering.

A Lycan attendant showed me inside—through halls that smelled like cedar and rain and old stone—and into a study where Declan was already awake.

He stood behind his desk, gray eyes giving nothing away, perfectly composed in the way only Lycan royalty could manage at dawn. He didn't ask why I was there. He just waited.

I laid the contract on his desk.

"A strategic mating compact," I said. "Formalized before the Lycan Council. Mutual territorial benefit. Political protection against my grandfather's maneuvering. You get access to Blood Crescent's eastern border. I get leverage Leland can't override."

Declan picked up the contract. Read every clause without expression. His fingers were steady on the paper.

"You're proposing a business arrangement," he said.

"Yes."

"And if I agree?"

"Then we sign it now. File it with the Council before Leland wakes up. And you become the most inconvenient problem he's ever tried to solve."

Declan's mouth curved—barely, just at one corner. He set the contract down and reached for a pen.

"I'll have Rowan witness," he said.

We signed at dawn. Rowan—Declan's Future Beta, a steady-eyed Lycan warrior who looked like he'd been expecting this—witnessed and took the documents for immediate Council filing. The whole thing took less than twenty minutes.

When it was done, Declan stood. "I'll have someone show you to your rooms."

I nodded. Turned to go. His hand brushed the small of my back as I passed—brief, instinctive, a contact he didn't comment on—and the cedar-and-rain scent of him wrapped around my lavender-and-frost for one moment that made my wolf stir behind my ribs.

I kept walking.

Rowan was waiting in the hallway, holding the signed contract, his expression patient.

"Welcome to Silverpine, Miss Ashford," he said quietly.

I looked back once. Declan was still standing in the study, watching me with those unreadable gray eyes.

I had just traded one bond for another. But this time, I was the one holding the pen.
