Chapter 1 of Betrayed Bride: Proposing To The Dragon Lord

Seraphina Beaumont POV:

Deep within this modern metropolis of neon and steel, ancient dragon bloodlines have never faded.

My gaze swept across the jewel‑adorned crowd gathered beneath the Dragon‑Fire Chandelier at the Sterling Family’s annual charity gala.

Apart from being members of various dragon‑descendant clans, they were also powerful, high‑flying successes in the outside world.

While they chatted and laughed openly in public, behind closed doors they divided dominion over this world by bloodline, covenant and gold.

I searched among these people for my fiancé, Julian Carlisle.

He had been avoiding me all day.

Just as I grew anxious, a glide‑stepped waiter slipped to my side with the silent grace of a predator.

He held a silver tray. Not with champagne, but with a single room key card and a folded note.

The script scrawled across the slip of paper did not belong to Julian. It was a stranger's—sharp, decisive, written in dark ink, and the paper carried a faint trace of something like sulfur and molten gold.

Scrawled upon it were the words: "The one you seek is in Room 3201."

My heart sank sharply, a flicker of unease creeping over me. Who had sent this note? And how did this person know I was searching for Julian?

I curled my fingers around the card. The cool metal edge dug into my sweating palm.

A bad feeling gnawed at the bottom of my heart, and something dormant in my dragon-blood stirred uneasily. As if driven by some unseen force, I believed what the note said.

Slipping past the noble crowd, I made my way to the exclusive elevator set aside for guest suites.

I found room 3201.

The door was slightly ajar, a dark slash in the brightly lit hallway. My heart hammered against my ribs. My hand, poised to knock, froze in mid-air.

A muffled, familiar giggle slipped through the crack in the door.

It was a sound like a cold needle sliding into my eardrum.

My cousin, Isabelle Sterling.

The blood in my veins turned to ice. My stomach clenched, a sickening knot of dread. I held my breath.

No more hesitation.

I shoved the door open.

The scene inside hit me like a physical blow. Julian and Isabelle, tangled together on the sofa, their clothes in disarray. The air was thick with the cloying scent of her cheap perfume and the stench of betrayal.

Isabelle shrieked, a theatrical gasp, snatching a throw blanket to clutch against her chest. Tears instantly welled in her eyes, as if she were the victim here. It was a performance I knew well.

Julian's face flashed with panic, then twisted into a snarl of fury.

"Seraphina! Who let you in? What are you doing skulking around?"

That shameless accusation shattered the last, pathetic fragment of hope in my chest.

Isabelle started to sob. "Sera, you're misunderstanding. Julian and I were just... we were just discussing your birthday gift..."

I watched their clumsy, insulting performance. The anger and hurt receded, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep cold. A numbness.

I calmly pulled my phone from my clutch. My thumb moved swiftly across the screen, finding a number I had prayed I would never have to use.

The Dragon Guard emergency line.

The Dragon Guard were the iron fist of the kingdom's law. They did not break up lovers' quarrels. But a breach of a sealed marriage contract between two Dragon Lord houses was not a domestic dispute—it was a matter of law and blood.

I pressed the call button, lifted the phone to my ear, and spoke with chilling clarity.

"Dragon Guard center. I'm reporting an incident at the Aethelburg Grand Hotel, room 3201. Julian Carlisle, of the Carlisle Dragon Lord family, is engaged in indecent conduct in a public establishment, in violation of the terms of his marriage contract with the Beaumont family."

Julian's face drained of all color. He shot to his feet. "Are you insane? Do you have any idea what you're doing?"

Isabelle's fake sobs choked off, her expression turning to one of pure, unveiled horror.

"I have never been more sane," I said, and ended the call.

I just watched them.

Less than a minute later, heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed from the hallway. Not hotel security. This was the metallic, disciplined tread of soldiers.

The door was pushed fully open.

Standing in the doorway, flanked by two guards in the severe black uniforms of the Dragon Guard, was Gideon Montgomery. I had seen him from a distance in the ballroom downstairs, a figure of immense power and quiet intensity whose dragon-aura pressed against the room like a heat haze.

He wore a perfectly tailored black formal coat, a simple, elegant dragon-shaped pin fastened to his lapel.

I suddenly remembered the highest response protocol for the emergency line. If a Dragon Lord was on site, the alert went directly to them.

He was at this ball.

The air in the room seemed to evaporate. His presence was so immense it made the space feel small and cramped.

His gaze, the color of a winter lake, swept dispassionately over the room—the panicked Julian, the trembling Isabelle, the disheveled sofa.

Then, his eyes landed on me.

Time stopped.

In those deep gray irises, there was none of the scorn or judgment I expected. There was... an intensity I couldn't name. A focus so absolute it felt as if he saw straight through the chaos, through my carefully constructed composure, and into the very core of me, where my own dormant dragon-blood stirred in answer.

My heart began to pound in a frantic, uncontrolled rhythm. It was a strange, terrifying thrill of being seen, of being locked in the sights of a powerful predator.

I could almost smell his Dragon's Scent, a legendary aroma said to be like sulfur and molten gold. It filled my lungs, making me dizzy, making my knees feel weak. It was a scent that should have been terrifying, but my soul seemed to recognize it.

His gaze held mine for only three seconds, but it felt like an eternity.

He looked away, turning his attention to Julian. His voice was devoid of any warmth. "Julian Carlisle. You disgrace your family."

He didn't even glance at Isabelle, dismissing her as if she were a piece of furniture.

One of the guards stepped forward. "Lord Montgomery, what are your orders?"

The title, "Lord Montgomery," spoken with such deference, cemented his absolute authority.

Gideon's eyes returned to me. His voice was lower now, but still held the sharp edge of a command. "Take them. Detain them for questioning." He then gestured to the other guard. "You. Personally escort Miss Beaumont home. Ensure her safety."

The order not only punished the guilty but offered me a level of protection and respect I had never known. It was the ultimate public humiliation for Julian and Isabelle.

After giving his commands, Gideon turned and left, not sparing the wreckage of the room a second glance. He had arrived, passed judgment, and departed, all with the detached efficiency of a man disposing of trash.

I remained where I stood. The arrival of the guards and Gideon’s orders had bought me a temporary reprieve. Yet the way the lord looked at me, along with that familiar scent clinging to him, set my mind racing.

Sulfur and molten‑gold fragrance had lingered on that very same note. Coupled with the timing of his appearance — could all of this truly be nothing more than a coincidence?
