Chapter 1 of After My Mate Called Me Useless, My Wolf Awakened

The bond broke at 10:47 on the night of the Pack Banquet.

I didn't know it yet. I was standing in the entrance hall of the pack house, straightening the collar of Graham's formal jacket as he arrived late, my fingertips brushing the fabric near his throat—and then I stopped. My hand froze mid-motion. Beneath his own cedar-and-smoke scent, layered thick and hours old, was something else. Wild rose. Ash. The intimate warmth of a she-wolf's skin.

Graham didn't flinch. He smiled down at me, easy and familiar, and covered my hand with his. "You've outdone yourself tonight, Callie," he said. "The hall looks perfect."

I pulled my hand back slowly. My wolf—silent my entire life, a hollow space I had learned to live around—stirred behind my ribs. It was a low, furious vibration I had never felt before, like something enormous waking up in a room too small to hold it.

"Thank you," I said. My voice came out smooth. "The elders are waiting."

I turned and walked into the banquet hall. I seated the elders. I poured the ceremonial wine with steady hands. I smiled at the right moments and said the right things. I did not look at Graham. I did not touch the mate mark on my neck, though my fingers ached to press against it, to check if it was still warm.

The toasts went on. The elders praised Graham's leadership. Beta Harlan raised his glass to the pack's strength. I stood at Graham's side in the Luna's place and felt the wild-rose-and-ash scent curling through the bond channel like smoke under a door.

When the formal portion ended and the wolves began to mingle, Graham leaned close and murmured, "I need to step out for a moment. Council business." His hand brushed my lower back, a gesture so practiced it looked affectionate.

I nodded. "Of course."

I watched him leave through the east corridor—the locked wing of the pack house, the one he had told me was reserved for storage and old records. I counted to thirty. Then I followed.

The east wing was dark. I moved quietly, my heartbeat loud in my ears, the scent growing stronger with every step. Wild rose. Ash. And beneath it, unmistakable now, Graham's cedar-and-smoke layered so thick it could only mean one thing.

I stopped outside a door at the end of the hall. Through the wood I heard his voice—laughing, unguarded, intimate in a way I had not heard in years.

"The old man actually cried, Milena. It was pathetic."

My back hit the corridor wall. My knees locked. I pressed two fingers to the mate mark on my neck. It was still warm.

Inside the room, a woman's voice—low, amused, familiar in a way that made my stomach turn. "Three days in the rain. You're a better actor than I gave you credit for."

"It wasn't acting," Graham said. "It was strategy. Her grandfather was the gatekeeper. I needed his approval to get to her bloodline."

"And now?"

"Now the bloodline's done its job. The Council seat is within reach. I just need to time the transition carefully. Callie's useful—she manages the pack house, keeps the elders happy, projects that healing aura that keeps our warriors stronger than they should be. But she's not Luna material long-term. You are."

There was a pause. Then the sound of fabric shifting, bodies moving closer.

"How long?" Milena asked.

"Soon," Graham said. "I'll handle it. She won't see it coming."

I did not move. I stood in the dark corridor with my hand on my neck and my wolf vibrating behind my ribs, and I made a decision that felt like stone settling at the bottom of a lake.

I opened the mate bond channel as wide as it would go.

The bond was designed to let mates share sensation, emotion, presence. Most wolves kept it at a low hum, a background awareness. I had always kept mine open to Graham because I loved him, because I wanted to feel close to him even when we were apart.

Now I flooded it. I absorbed every psychic imprint coming through that channel—his satisfaction, his certainty, his lust for the woman in that room. I pressed it into the bond like evidence into wax, every sensation sharp and undeniable.

Then I did something I had not done since I was a child.

I reached through the blood mind-link to my mother.

The channel had been closed for years. We had not spoken through it since the day she left Ironclaw, the silence standing in for all the things neither of us knew how to say. Opening it now felt like breaking a seal.

*I need you,* I sent, clear and deliberate. *Come now.*

In the Lycan Royal compound, hundreds of miles away, my mother felt her daughter's voice crack the dormant channel open. I felt her shock, her immediate undoing, and then—steady and certain—her response.

*I'm coming. Hold on.*

I pulled my hand away from the mate mark. I straightened. I walked back down the east corridor, through the banquet hall where wolves were still laughing and drinking, and resumed my Luna duties without a tremor.

I greeted elders. I thanked guests. I managed the pack house with the same meticulous competence I had always projected. When the last wolf retired and the hall emptied, I stood alone in the center of the room and pressed two fingers to the mate mark one deliberate time. It was still warm.

I forced my hand to my side.

Through the bond channel, I could feel Graham's satisfaction, his certainty that everything was under control. I let him feel it. I let him believe I was blind.

The wolf behind my ribs was no longer a vibration. It was a second heartbeat, slow and enormous, pressing outward.

And somewhere far away, my mother was already moving.
