Chapter 1 of After My Mate Betrayed Me, I Claimed the Throne

At 8:41 on a Thursday night, three days before the ceremony that would finally make me Luna, my wolf woke up inside me and said my name.

*Zoe.*

I dropped the ladle. It clanged against the stove.

Seven years. Seven years of silence in my own skull, of reaching for her and touching nothing but a cold, empty room. And then she was there, all at once, like someone throwing open a window in a sealed house.

And the smell hit me.

I didn't turn around. I couldn't. It came at me from every direction at once — vanilla and peach and something underneath it, warm and female and *specific.* Giselle. Not a trace. Not a passing hello-I-stopped-by. It was baked into the wood. Soaked into the chair at the head of the table, the one Killian always sits in, the arms of it, the back where his shoulders press. It hung thick in the hallway near the coat hooks. It was in the runner by the stairs. It was in the air of the room I had cleaned and cooked in and slept above for seven years.

Years of it. Layer on layer on layer, like sediment in a riverbed.

My hand closed. My nails went into my palm, and I pushed until something gave, until I felt the wet warmth pool into the creases of my fingers. The pain was small and clean and it kept me standing.

*He let her sit in his chair,* my wolf said. Her voice was low and torn up at the edges, like she'd been screaming somewhere I couldn't hear her. *He let her sit in his chair and then he came home and ate your food.*

The front door opened. Boots on the mat.

I didn't move. I stood exactly where I was, one hand bleeding at my side, the other flat on the counter, my face doing nothing at all.

"Is dinner ready?" Killian said, already halfway to the fridge, not looking at me. Her scent came in with him like a second person. It was on his collar. On the underside of his jaw. Fresh.

"Yes," I said.

He grunted and took a beer.

---

There is one bathroom in the pack house with a lock that actually catches. I've known that for seven years. I know it the way you know where the fire exits are.

I shut myself in and put my back against the door and slid down until I was sitting on the tile.

I didn't ask her where she'd been. I didn't ask her why now. I opened my mouth in the dark and what came out was this:

*"I'm sorry I let them tell you that you weren't worth keeping."*

She didn't answer with words. What came instead was heat — a slow, fierce, animal warmth rolling up through my chest and into my throat, the way a big dog leans its whole weight against your legs. Seven years I'd thought she was dead. Seven years I'd let them say *broken* and *defective* over my head at dinner tables and not once defended her.

She forgave me in about four seconds. Which is more than I deserved.

Then I reached out.

The mind-link across an ocean is like shouting down a well. It took three tries. Then Della's voice came through, and she wasn't shouting — she was too angry for that.

*Zoe? Little storm — seven years, and you pick tonight—*

*I need passage out.*

Silence. I could feel her breathing on the other end of it. When she spoke again her voice was flat and controlled and underneath it something was showing teeth.

*Who touched you.*

*Nobody touched me. Just get me a boat.*

*Three days,* she said. *Coastal boundary, the old fisherman's dock. I'll have an escort in the water. Zoe.* A pause. *You don't have to explain anything to me. Not now, not when you land. Understand?*

I closed the link before my voice could do something embarrassing.

Then I took the ledger out of my sleeve lining.

Small thing. Leather. Half the pages already full. I wrote the date. The time — 8:41 p.m. I wrote *scent-layering detected, kitchen chair, hallway, coat hooks. Not recent. Estimate 4+ years of deposit.* My handwriting came out perfectly even. I was almost proud of it.

Then, at the bottom, I wrote: *supply withdrawal to begin tonight.*

There are twelve vials in the healer's cold room that I refill every Thursday. Silver-cleansed. Mine. The border patrols drink it before every rotation and think it's some rare herbal tincture the elders buy from the coast. Nobody has ever asked me. Nobody has ever thanked me, because nobody knows.

I walked past the cold room that night with my sleeve buttoned over the ledger, and I kept walking.

---

The next morning Mira Whitlock had me on a stool in her fitting room with two hundred pins in my ceremonial gown and her mouth full of three more.

"Hold still," she said.

I was holding still. And then the door down the hall opened somewhere and a thread of scent came drifting under the doorframe — Giselle, and Killian braided through her — and my head turned before I could stop it. My eyes went with it, tracking it across the room like a hound.

It lasted less than a second.

But Mira was looking right at the mirror.

I met her eyes in the glass. Her hands had stopped. The pins sat forgotten between her lips. Twenty years she'd fitted Lunas in this room. She knew exactly what a scentless woman's eyes could and could not do.

She took the pins out of her mouth, very slowly.

I raised one finger and pressed it to my lips.

Mira looked at me for a long moment. Something moved behind her face — not surprise. Something older and colder and more patient than surprise.

She raised her own finger and pressed it to her own lips.

Then she went back to my hem like nothing had happened. "You've lost weight," she said. "I'll take the waist in."

"Take it in," I agreed.

"Alpha's been in and out all week," she added mildly, mouth full of pins again. "Takes his calls in the east corridor. Right outside my storeroom. Terrible acoustics in there, you know. Voices carry."

I looked down at the top of her gray head.

"Do they," I said.

"Mm."

---

The pre-ceremony dinner was that night, twenty at the long table, candles, the whole performance. They sat Giselle beside me. Maid of honor. My choice, from years ago, when I still had one friend I thought was mine.

She put her hand over my wrist. "I just worry about you, Zoe," she said, in that soft syrupy voice everyone loved. "You've barely eaten. It's such a big week for you."

Her perfume was floral and expensive and it did absolutely nothing to hide what was underneath it. Him. On her neck. Under her arms. In her hair. I nearly gagged into my napkin.

"I'm fine," I said.

I catalogued her instead. The charm bracelet on her wrist — silver, three little moons, a birthday gift from me when we were fifteen. She has never once taken it off. I used to find that touching. Sitting there with my new nose, I finally understood what it actually was: a receipt. Proof of access. *I was always close enough to touch her things.*

And there was the little glass vial she keeps in her purse and takes out to dab at her throat every twenty minutes. Rose, supposedly. But under the rose was something chemical and flat and wrong, something that made the back of my tongue itch. Not perfume. Perfume doesn't smell like that.

*What is that,* my wolf said. She'd gone very quiet and very still. *Zoe. That is not perfume.*

Across the table, Killian rolled his shoulders back and set his jaw, and I knew what was coming a half second before it came. He'd done it a thousand times.

"You," he said to the boy refilling the water, and the Alpha tone landed so hard the kid's knees buckled and glass went across the tablecloth. "Watch what you're doing."

Everyone laughed politely. The boy stammered an apology.

Under the tablecloth I opened the ledger on my knee and wrote: *9:14 p.m. Alpha tone used on Omega server, no cause.* Steady lines. Not a tremor in them.

"Excuse me a moment," Giselle murmured, and pushed her chair back, and left.

I watched Killian watch her go.

Seven years I'd looked at that man's face across tables. I had never once seen it do what it did just then — go soft, go open, go warm all the way to the eyes, following her out of the room like a dog watching the door close.

Then he turned back, and it was gone, and he looked at me with the flat impatience he saved for furniture.

"Sit up straight," he said. "You look sick."

I lifted my wine and drank the whole glass.

Out in the corridor, past the candles, Giselle's voice floated back, low and pleased, talking to someone I couldn't see:

"—no, no, it's a wedding gift. For Zoe. She'll wear it that night, I'll make sure of it."
