Chapter 1 of A Strange Woman Texted My Husband

The Seattle rain finally stopped, leaving behind the heavy scent of damp cedar and wet asphalt.

"How did the merger meeting go?" I asked, watching the city lights blur past the window.

"Brutal. They fought me on every valuation." Julian loosened his silk tie, his sharp jawline illuminated by the passing neon signs. "But I locked it down. Now, I just want to celebrate with my beautiful wife."

He drove his brand-new, dark grey Audi A8 with effortless confidence. Inside the cabin, the climate control hummed at a perfect seventy-two degrees. The dashboard cast a faint, cool glow over the leather interior. Everything felt considerate and elegant.

"Baby, put some music on for us," Julian said, glancing over with a warm smile.

He handed me his iPhone. The metal casing still held the heat of his palm.

"Use my Apple Music," he added, keeping his eyes on the road. "Play that jazz vinyl playlist you love. The Billie Holiday one."

I took the device, swiping upward to unlock it. A profound sense of peace settled over me. In a city this chaotic and fast-paced, I had somehow secured a Wall Street investment director who was young, successful, and fiercely loyal.

My thumb hovered over the search bar.

Right before I could tap the screen, a banner notification dropped from the top edge. It was an iMessage from an unsaved number.

*Honey, are you free to come out and do it again tonight? My sheets are full of your scent, miss you to death...*

The message landed like a blow. I couldn't breathe.

My lungs stopped working. The blood drained from my face in a single second. My fingertips turned instantly to ice, locking up so hard I could barely bend my joints. The comfortable heat of the car suddenly turned thin and suffocating. My chest locked.

"What’s wrong, Elena? Can't find it?"

Julian’s voice drifted over from the driver’s seat. He sounded entirely relaxed.

I whipped my head toward him. My hand shook uncontrollably as I shoved the bright screen inches from his face.

"Julian... what is this?" My voice cracked, pitching upward in panic.

He squinted at the text.

For a microsecond, his pupils shrank. The tiny muscle in his jaw jumped. But just as quickly, his brow furrowed into a mask of deeply offended absurdity.

"Who sent this?!" His voice spiked, vibrating with raw disbelief. "How the hell should I know what that garbage is?! It’s obviously a wrong number!"

"A wrong number?!" Tears flooded my vision. The sheer terror of betrayal swallowed me whole. "‘Do it again’? ‘Sheets full of your scent’? Which stranger sends that to a random contact?!"

"Someone must have sent the text message to the wrong number!" he yelled. "Jesus Christ, you’re actually doubting me?"

He gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles turning stark white.

"We’ve been married four years! I kill myself working seventy-hour weeks on M&A deals for our future. You sit in my passenger seat and accuse me of cheating over a spam text?!"

He yanked the wheel hard to the right. The tires shrieked violently against the slick pavement. The heavy sedan slammed to a halt against the curb.

Julian snatched the phone from my trembling fingers. His face flushed a dark, angry red.

"Fine! You don't believe me?" He jabbed his finger at the screen. "I’ll call them right now. You can hear it for yourself."

He tapped the callback button and slammed the speaker icon.

*Ring.*

Every tone struck my chest like a hammer. I dug my nails into the leather strap of my seatbelt.

*Ring.*

"Julian, hang up," I whispered, suddenly terrified of the reality waiting on the other end.

"No. You wanted the truth."

*Ring.*

The line clicked open.

A soft, lazy exhale drifted through the car speakers. A woman’s breathing.

Before she could form a single syllable, Julian erupted.

"Who is this?!" he roared, his voice thunderous. "Do you have any idea who you’re texting?! You send your filthy prostitution garbage to my private number, and I’ll have the cops trace your number before you can blink!"

Dead silence fell over the line. The sheer force of his rage seemed to paralyze whoever was on the other end.

Two agonizing seconds ticked by.

"I-I'm sorry, sir," a young, frantic voice finally stammered. "I typed the wrong digit. I'm so sorry..."

*Click.*

She hung up.

A suffocating quiet filled the cabin.

Julian hurled the device onto the center console. His chest heaved with heavy, ragged breaths. He turned to me. His eyes swam with a potent mix of disappointment and wounded pride.

"Did you hear that, Elena?" he asked, his tone dropping to a sharp whisper. "A cheap hooker mass-texting for clients. Are you satisfied now?"

I stared at his righteous expression. I looked at his bloodshot eyes. My absolute certainty began to fracture. A massive wave of guilt and retrospective fear crashed over me, washing away the anger.

"But... Julian," I stammered, wrapping my arms tightly around my waist. "How did a woman like that get your private number?"

He let out a harsh, exhausted laugh and dragged both hands down his face.

"Are you kidding me? Which shopping site doesn't sell our data? Which car rental agency doesn't leak our profiles?"

He slumped back against the headrest, staring blankly at the roof of the car.

"Elena, if you can’t give me basic trust, what is this marriage even for? You just want to pin some imaginary crime on me? Do you want to see me break?"

The moral high ground in his voice shoved me directly into the abyss of shame. Was I really that sensitive? Did I just destroy our perfect evening over an automated spam bot?

"I’m sorry, Julian." The tears finally spilled over, hot and stinging against my cheeks. "I'm so sorry. I just panicked. Let's go home."

He didn't answer immediately. He let the silence stretch, punishing me just a little longer.

Then, he sighed.

He leaned across the console and pulled me into his chest.

"Stop crying, baby," he murmured. His anger melted into weary affection as he rubbed my back. "I just don't want some trashy scammer ruining what we have."

I buried my face in the crook of his neck. The familiar scent of his expensive cologne washed over me. I squeezed my eyes shut, desperate to believe him. Desperate to return to the safety of ten minutes ago.

But in the cold darkness, hidden in the blind spot of his embrace, my mind refused to shut off.

The line of text burned behind my eyelids, permanently branded into my memory.
