Chapter 1 of Wife Unleashes Her Fury

I surveyed my Upper East Side penthouse with satisfaction as the caterers arranged the final touches. Crystal champagne flutes gleamed under the chandelier light, and white roses adorned every surface—a perfect setting for our intimate gathering of Manhattan's elite couples. The guest list was small but powerful: CEOs, hedge fund managers, and their equally accomplished spouses. My husband Michael's business associates, mostly, though I'd included a few of my old friends to balance the energy.

Twisting my Sterling family signet ring—a nervous habit I'd never outgrown—I checked my reflection in the hallway mirror. My emerald dress hugged my figure, the color bringing out the green flecks in my eyes. I looked every bit the successful businessman's wife, the role I'd embraced when I stepped back from my own promising career to support Michael's rise.

"You look stunning, as always," Michael's voice came from behind me, his hands settling on my shoulders. Tall, impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, with that confident smile that had first drawn me to him at Harvard. I leaned back against him, savoring the familiar scent of his cologne.

"Ready to dazzle everyone?" I asked, smiling at our reflection.

He straightened his tie—a habit I'd come to recognize preceded his most charismatic performances. "Always."

The evening progressed perfectly. Dinner conversation flowed as easily as the vintage Bordeaux. Michael commanded attention at the head of the table, regaling everyone with stories of his latest business triumph—conveniently omitting how my family connections had secured the critical investor.

"Let's play a game," suggested Eleanor Croft, Manhattan's most notorious socialite, after we'd moved to the living room with digestifs. "Something to liven up the night."

"Truth or dare?" offered someone, and laughter rippled through the room—adults playing a teenager's game while sipping thirty-year-old scotch.

I settled onto the sofa, amused by the idea. These people guarded their secrets like dragons hoarded gold—truths would be scarce tonight.

The game began innocuously. Harmless truths about first kisses, embarrassing moments at galas. Dares to do shots or prank call mutual acquaintances. The alcohol loosened inhibitions, and the dares grew bolder.

Then Eleanor, eyes glittering with mischief, turned to Michael. "Truth or dare, Michael?"

"Dare," he answered without hesitation, the confidence in his voice absolute. He never chose truth—I should have recognized that warning sign years ago.

Eleanor's red lips curved into a smile. "I dare you to kiss someone in this room—not your wife—for thirty seconds."

A chorus of theatrical gasps and giggles followed. I smiled, expecting Michael to give a quick peck to Eleanor or another wife's cheek—the polite response to such a dare in married company.

Michael stood, straightening his cuffs. My husband, always conscious of his image. He scanned the room, and his gaze settled on Natalie Brooks, his executive assistant who had joined us for dinner. Petite, with honey-blonde hair and a demure smile that never quite reached her eyes.

"Natalie," he said, voice smooth as the scotch in his glass. "Would you help me out? Save the shy girl some face?"

Shy? The woman who'd orchestrated his entire Tokyo merger? But Natalie ducked her head with practiced modesty, a becoming blush on her cheeks as she nodded.

Time slowed as Michael crossed to her. Something in his stride—a purpose, an eagerness—sent a chill through me before I could identify why.

He cupped her face with both hands. Not a friendly peck. Not a joking kiss. His mouth claimed hers with a passion I recognized intimately, his body angling toward hers with unmistakable desire.

Ten seconds passed. Twenty. The room grew quiet.

Thirty seconds came and went. They didn't stop.

I sat frozen, champagne glass suspended halfway to my lips, as my husband of eight years kissed his assistant with increasing fervor. One minute. Two. The kiss deepened, his hand sliding to her waist, pulling her closer.

Someone cleared their throat. Eleanor's eyes darted between them and me, drinking in the spectacle. The silence in the room pressed against my eardrums.

When they finally broke apart—after what my watch later told me was twenty-eight minutes—Michael didn't look at me. His eyes remained fixed on Natalie, a private smile passing between them.

"Well," Eleanor said into the silence, "I think we know who's getting a promotion this quarter."

Nervous laughter rippled through the room. I felt every eye on me, gauging my reaction, waiting for the tears or the scene they could gossip about tomorrow.

Instead, I smiled and reached for my phone, opening the luxury consignment app I often browsed. With steady fingers, I created a new listing as conversation awkwardly resumed around me.

Item: One husband, slightly used.

Condition: Poor. Damaged moral compass. Functions primarily below the belt.

Price: $50 (negotiable for the right buyer).

Description: Takes direction well from executive assistants. Best suited for someone with low expectations and high tolerance for public humiliation.

I attached a photo I'd taken earlier of Michael with his arm around Natalie at dinner, then hit "post."

Within seconds, my phone began vibrating with notifications. The listing was being shared among our social circle, comments and laughing emojis flooding in.

Michael's phone pinged. Then pinged again. And again. He pulled it from his pocket, his expression changing as he saw what I'd done. For the first time that evening, he looked directly at me, his face darkening with anger.

I raised my champagne glass in a silent toast, meeting his gaze without flinching.

The game had changed. And so had I.
