Chapter 1 of When My Husband Sacrificed Me for His Mistress

The first notification came at 6:47 PM on a Tuesday. I was in our kitchen, sauting garlic for the pasta Greyson liked, the one with the lemon zest and fresh parsley. My phone buzzed against the marble countertop, an unknown number lighting up the screen. I almost ignored it—another charity invitation, probably, or a wrong number. But something made me look.

The first image loaded slowly, pixel by pixel, like a nightmare materializing in broad daylight. Greyson's profile, unmistakable even in the dim lighting of what looked like a hotel room. His hand tangled in dark hair that wasn't mine. The second photo showed more—her face, eyes closed, lips parted. Poppy Vasquez. His secretary. The woman who brought him coffee every morning and called me 'Mrs. Hunter' with that sweet, deferential smile.

My hand trembled as I swiped through six more photos, each one more intimate than the last. The garlic began to burn in the pan, filling the kitchen with an acrid smell that seemed to match the taste in my mouth. Then the voice message played automatically, her voice breathy and triumphant, cutting through the kitchen like a blade.

"He hasn't loved you in years, sweetheart. He just didn't know how to say it."

I turned off the stove with mechanical precision, my body moving while my mind remained frozen. The blue light from my phone cast shadows across the granite countertops, the gleaming appliances, the half-finished meal that suddenly seemed like a museum exhibit from another life. Seven years of marriage. Seven years of mornings and evenings and quiet devotion, all captured in this single moment of betrayal.

The cab ride to the penthouse was a blur. I'd taken this route thousands of times, but tonight the familiar streets of Manhattan felt like foreign territory. The doorman nodded as I entered—"Good evening, Mrs. Hunter"—and I wondered if he knew. If everyone knew except me.

I used my key, the same key I'd carried since our wedding day. The foyer was exactly as I'd left it this morning: his briefcase by the door, my purse on the console table, the framed photograph of our wedding day smiling down at me. We looked so young, so certain. I walked past it toward the bedroom, each step feeling like I was walking through deep water.

The bedroom door opened with its familiar soft click. No dramatic slamming, no cinematic reveal. Just quiet, devastating reality. They were there, in the bed we'd shared for seven years, in the sheets I'd washed and folded just yesterday. Greyson saw me first. He didn't scramble or apologize or offer excuses. He simply looked at me with something worse than guilt—irritation. As though I was the inconvenience in this moment.

"Hadley," he said, my name sounding foreign on his lips. "I was going to tell you."

Tell me. As if this could be explained away. As if this could be folded neatly into conversation over morning coffee.

The next morning, a courier delivered the divorce papers. Greyson's attorney—a shark in an expensive suit—handed them to me in the living room with the same detached professionalism he might use to discuss quarterly earnings. Greyson stood by the window, looking out at the Manhattan skyline, not looking at me.

"It's better for both of us," he said, his voice as cold as the glass he was staring through. "Sign them. Don't make this complicated."

I stared at the papers, the legal language swimming before my eyes. Words like 'irretrievable breakdown' and 'irreconcilable differences'—clinical terms for the death of something that had once felt like forever. I picked up the pen, my signature a pale imitation of the one I'd used to sign our marriage certificate seven years ago.

I didn't make it complicated. I signed.

But as I handed the papers back, the room began to tilt. The floor rushed up to meet me, and the last thing I saw was Greyson's face—not concerned, not rushing toward me, just watching as I collapsed.

I woke up to the steady beep of hospital monitors and the antiseptic smell of New York-Presbyterian. A doctor with kind eyes stood at the foot of my bed, clipboard in hand, looking at me with the careful expression medical professionals use when delivering life-altering news.

"Mrs. Hunter," she said gently. "You're eight weeks pregnant."

I stared at the ceiling, the fluorescent lights creating patterns I'd never noticed before. My hand moved to my still-flat stomach, then to the bare space on my ring finger where my wedding band had been removed. A nurse had placed the ultrasound printout on my bedside table—a tiny flicker of life in a sea of destruction.

I didn't call anyone. Didn't cry. Didn't scream or rage or collapse further. I simply lay there, holding this fragile, unwanted spark of something in the wreckage of everything I'd believed was true.
