Chapter 1 of When My Husband Chose My Cousin Over Our Family

The front door opened at four-seventeen.

I knew the time because I was folding Noah's laundry on the couch, and the little clock on the cable box glowed red across the room. Chase came in the way he always did on holidays. Wool coat over one arm. Phone in his hand. A smile that arrived a half-second before his eyes did.

"Hey, babe."

"Hey."

He leaned down to kiss my forehead. That was when I smelled it.

Jasmine. Sweet, heavy, wrong.

I don't wear jasmine. I've never worn jasmine. I wear bergamot and white tea, and Chase knows that because he bought me the bottle for our anniversary last March, and I told him then, and I told him again in June, and I told him again the week before Christmas because he asked what I wanted in my stocking.

I opened my mouth to say something. I don't know what.

And then Noah came running.

He came around the corner in his little dinosaur socks, arms out, laughing that soft chirpy laugh he does when he sees his dad. Chase scooped him up. Kissed his cheek. Pressed him against that coat.

Noah stopped laughing.

It happened fast. Faster than I can write it now. His little chest pulled in. His eyes went round. He made a sound like a whistle that wasn't a whistle at all, and his hand went to his throat, and Chase said, "What—what's wrong with him?"

I was already moving.

The EpiPen lives in the kitchen drawer, second from the top, right next to the coupon clips. I had it in my hand before I remembered walking. I took my son from my husband's arms, laid him on the rug, pushed up the leg of his pajama pants, and pressed the auto-injector into his thigh.

One. Two. Three.

Hold.

His breathing hitched. Then eased. Then eased again.

I didn't cry. My hands didn't shake. I counted his breaths against my own until they matched.

Chase stood in the doorway. Just stood there. His coat was still on. One button at his collar was undone, and I hadn't noticed that button when he walked in, but I noticed it now. A little gap of white shirt. A little smear of something that might have been makeup along the seam.

"Is he okay?" Chase asked.

"He's okay."

"Should we—should I call the doctor, or—"

"I've got it."

I didn't look up. I couldn't yet. I was afraid of what my face would do.

Something inside me went very still. Not calm. Still. Like water when it finally freezes and you can see straight through it to the bottom.

---

He was in the shower by nine. Noah was asleep by nine-thirty. I sat at the kitchen island with my laptop and a mug of tea that had gone cold an hour ago, and I opened Chase's shared calendar.

I started with November.

A client dinner in Tribeca on the eighth. I pulled up Instagram. Searched the wine bar's location tag. Scrolled.

There she was.

Layne. My cousin Layne. In a red silk blouse, laughing at something off-camera, a glass of something amber lifted halfway to her mouth. Timestamp: November eighth. Nine-forty-two PM.

I didn't blink. I clicked the next tab.

A "conference" in Greenwich the weekend of December second. Layne posted a sunrise photo from a hotel balcony I recognized because Chase and I had brunch there once.

A weeknight in October he said he was at the office late. She geotagged a rooftop bar in Chelsea. Same hour.

I made a spreadsheet. That's the part I don't want to admit to anyone. I made a spreadsheet.

By midnight I had eleven matches.

By one, I found the condo.

Three blocks from our building. Purchased in September. Registered under an LLC whose EIN I recognized because it was the same one Chase used for his side investment vehicle, the one he told me about over dinner two years ago when he was proud of himself for setting it up.

I closed the laptop.

I sat in the dark for a long time.

I did not cry.

---

My mother called at eight the next morning. Sandra Bell rarely calls before ten. She's a lawyer. She sleeps in on weekends and pretends she doesn't.

"Happy New Year, sweetheart."

"Happy New Year, Mom."

She talked about the brunch. The caterer. Uncle Rob's gout. And then, in that light tone she uses when she's actually watching my reaction—

"Diane's insufferable this year. Apparently Layne's got some finance boyfriend she's been hiding. Very hush-hush. Very wealthy. And—" a pause, "—she's pregnant. Diane wants to announce a spring wedding tomorrow. In front of everyone."

I kept my breath even. I put my hand flat on the counter.

"Mm."

"You okay, honey?"

"I'm fine, Mom. Just tired. Noah had a rough night."

We hung up.

I sat on the hallway floor.

I don't remember standing up.

I remember, at some point, going to the nightstand and taking out the yellow legal pad my mother gave me the year I graduated law-adjacent enough to almost follow her career. I remember writing a number one, and then a period, and then a sentence.

By the time the sun moved across the wall, I had twelve numbered bullet points.

---

I called Nina Auerbach at eleven. My mother's law partner. Warm voice. Terrifying mind.

"Hypothetically," I said, "if there were an infidelity clause in a prenup—how much evidence would someone need before filing?"

"Hypothetically," Nina said, and I could hear the smile that wasn't really a smile, "documented sexual conduct outside the marriage. Photos, texts, receipts, audio. No court appearance needed pre-filing. That clause is airtight, Felicity. Your mother wrote it herself."

"Thank you."

"Whose is it?"

"Hypothetical."

"Mm-hm."

I spent the afternoon inside the cloud. Screenshots. Hotel confirmations. Venmo transfers with cute little emoji captions I will never unsee. I saved everything to three separate encrypted folders. My hands were steady.

At six, I drove down to a shop on Canal with a neon sign and a bored kid behind the counter. I bought a voice recorder the size of a Tic Tac. Tested the audio against the hum of the fridge. Clear.

I laid out Noah's little navy blazer on the guest bed. Prepared his French toast batter for morning. Kissed his hair while he slept.

Then I brushed my teeth, set my alarm, and turned off the light at 10:47.

I had twenty-four hours.

I slept.
