Chapter 1 of When My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Dead Baby

The hospital room was white and cold. I sat on the edge of the bed, still wearing the gown they gave me. My legs hung down, bare feet not touching the floor. The IV port in my arm ached where they'd pulled the needle out.

I'd lost the baby three hours ago.

The nurse had asked if I wanted to call someone. I said no. She looked at me for a long moment, then left. I heard her shoes squeak down the hall.

I kept my phone in my lap, screen dark. I didn't call Lucian. I'd already called him twice from the ambulance. Both times it rang through to voicemail. The second time I didn't leave a message.

The ceiling had a water stain shaped like a hand. I stared at it until a doctor came in with discharge papers. She explained something about follow-up appointments and warning signs. I nodded. She put a pamphlet about grief counseling on the bed beside me. I left it there when I got dressed and walked out.

The apartment was dark when I got home. I didn't turn on the lights. I sat at the kitchen table and pulled the divorce agreement from my bag. I'd printed it at a FedEx three days ago, before the cramping started. The pages were still crisp.

I laid them in the center of the table. Then I sat in the dark and waited.

Lucian came home at eleven. I heard his key in the lock, the door opening, his briefcase hitting the floor in the entryway. He walked into the kitchen and stopped when he saw me.

"Holly." His voice was flat. Tired. He reached for the light switch.

"Don't," I said.

His hand dropped. He stood in the doorway, backlit by the hall light. I couldn't see his face clearly. Maybe that made it easier.

"I was at the hospital," I said. "This afternoon."

Silence.

"I lost the baby."

He didn't move. Didn't speak. I watched his silhouette and waited for something—anything. An apology. A step forward. His voice breaking.

Nothing came.

"I called you," I said. "Twice."

"I was in meetings." His tone didn't change. "I'm sorry."

The words landed like coins on a counter. Correct denomination. No weight.

I looked down at the papers on the table. "I want a divorce."

Another silence. Longer this time. Then he walked forward, pulled out the chair across from me, and sat. He picked up the agreement and flipped through it. Three pages. It took him maybe thirty seconds.

Then he reached into his jacket, pulled out a pen, and signed.

He didn't read the terms. Didn't ask questions. Just signed his name at the bottom of the last page, set the pen down, and stood.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and his expression shifted—just slightly. Something like focus. Like he'd remembered something important.

"I have to go," he said.

I stared at him. "Now?"

"It's an emergency." He was already moving toward the door, phone pressed to his ear. I heard a woman's voice on the other end, high and shaking. "I'm on my way," he said into the phone. "Stay calm. I'll be there in twenty minutes."

The door closed behind him.

I sat alone in the dark kitchen, the signed divorce agreement in front of me, and felt nothing. Not anger. Not grief. Just a cold, hollow space where something used to be.

I didn't cry.

The next morning, I opened my laptop and found an email from a law firm I didn't recognize. Subject line: *Stone Family Trust — Confidential Disclosure Required.* I almost deleted it. Then I saw Lucian's name in the first line.

I read it three times.

Lucian Stone. Sole heir. Stone Industries. Estimated net worth: $4.7 billion.

I sat very still.

Then I stood, walked to the closet, and pulled out the shoebox where I kept our photos. Brooklyn. The cramped studio. Dollar pizza on paper plates. Subway rides with his arm around my shoulders. I spread them across the floor and looked at every single one.

I couldn't find the lie. He looked the same in every picture. Smiled the same. Held me the same.

He'd been lying the entire time.

My phone buzzed. A news alert.

*Stone Industries Heir Announces Engagement to Katalina Sanders at Corporate Gala.*

I clicked the link. There was a photo. Lucian in a tuxedo, standing beside a woman in a red gown. She was beautiful. Smiling. His hand rested on the small of her back.

The article called it a "strategic alliance between two prominent families."

I read the headline again. Then I closed the app, finished my coffee, and walked out of the apartment.

I didn't take anything with me except my purse.

Two weeks later, I moved into a budget hotel in Midtown. I got a part-time job filing paperwork at a dental office. I contacted a public defender's office about finalizing the divorce. They said they'd file the paperwork within thirty days.

I believed them.

I didn't know that Lucian's attorney had already been instructed to delay everything. That legally, I was still his wife. Still his next of kin.

I didn't know that meant they could do anything they wanted to me, and I'd have no one to call.

Not yet.
