Chapter 1 of When My Groom Slapped Me at Our Wedding

I stand in front of the floor-length mirror in the bridal suite, and the woman looking back at me is a stranger in ivory Vera Wang. The gown fits perfectly. The seamstress spent three fittings making sure of that. But something feels wrong. My hand drifts to my hair, to the bare spot above my left ear where I used to wear a cheap rhinestone clip. I lost it three years ago. The day Caleb saved my life.

My phone buzzes on the vanity. Lily's name lights up the screen.

*We're in position. Say the word whenever you're ready.*

I silence it. My thumb hovers over the screen for a second too long. Then I set it face-down and tell myself today will be fine. The debt is real. I owe him this. I owe him everything.

The Malibu cliffside venue is exactly what Jane Hicks wanted. White chairs in perfect rows. An arch covered in roses that cost more per stem than most people spend on groceries. Three hundred guests in designer everything. The ocean crashes below, and the sun is too bright, and my bridesmaids keep checking their phones with expressions I can't read.

I'm near the entrance, adjusting my veil for the fourth time, when I see her.

Kehlani Moore.

She's wearing black. Not navy. Not charcoal. Black. A custom Valentino gown with a neckline that plunges to her sternum and a skirt that moves like smoke. It's stunning. It's also, unmistakably, funeral attire. She walks past me without a glance, her heels clicking on the stone path, and claims a front-row seat. Right next to Caleb's mother.

Jane Hicks sees me staring. She intercepts me before I can move, her hand light on my elbow, her voice loud enough for the guests nearby to hear.

"Kehlani looks incredible, doesn't she?" Jane says. Her smile is thin and sharp. "So fearless. So bold. Not everyone can pull off a statement like that."

She glances at my bridesmaids—Lily, Aleena, Renata—in their rose-gold gowns. Her smile tightens.

"Your girls are a bit much, though, sweetheart. Too flashy. Too attention-seeking for a wedding party. But I suppose that's just how some people are."

She pats my arm and walks away.

I stand there. The words sit in my chest like stones. I tell myself it doesn't matter. Today is about Caleb. About the life he gave back to me. About gratitude.

But my feet carry me toward Kehlani anyway.

She's scrolling through her phone when I stop in front of her. She looks up. Tilts her head slightly to the left. Holds my gaze a fraction too long.

"Hey, Raina," she says. Her voice is light. Easy. "You look beautiful."

"Thank you." I keep my tone even. Courteous. "Kehlani, I need to ask you to change into something more appropriate. Or leave."

Her eyebrows lift. "Seriously?"

"Yes."

She leans back in her chair. "Honestly, I just wore what felt right. I mean, is this really the hill you want to die on today, Raina?"

Before I can respond, she clutches her chest. Her eyes go wide. She gasps—soft, breathy, perfectly timed—and crumples forward. Two guests rush to her side before she hits the ground. Someone shouts for water. Another person fans her with a program.

I stand there, frozen, watching the performance.

Then Caleb is there.

He shoves past me without a word. Drops to his knees beside Kehlani. Cradles her head in his hands. His voice is low and urgent. "Lani. Lani, breathe. I've got you."

She blinks up at him. Her hand finds his. She whispers something I can't hear.

Caleb's jaw tightens. He stands. Turns. Crosses the space between us in five strides.

The sound comes before I understand what's happening.

His palm connects with my left cheek. Hard. The crack echoes across the cliffside. My head snaps to the side. Heat floods my face. The world tilts.

Three hundred people go silent.

Caleb's voice is loud. Clear. "Kneel."

I blink. My ears are ringing.

"Kneel," he says again. "And apologize. You nearly killed her."

I raise my hand slowly. Touch my burning cheek. My fingers come away clean. No blood. Just heat. Just shame.

And then something inside me breaks.

Not the way glass breaks. The way a dam breaks.

Three years of gratitude. Three years of telling myself I owed him. Three years of making myself small enough to fit inside the story he told about saving me. All of it collapses in a single breath.

I look at Caleb. Really look at him. At the man who just struck me in front of everyone I know. At the man whose penthouse I own. Whose Tesla I bought. Whose Rolex collection I funded. Whose mistress I've been paying for.

I don't kneel.

I don't speak.

I just look at him the way you look at something you're about to dismantle.

Then I snap my fingers.

The sound is small. Precise. Final.

And everything changes.
