When My Alpha Chose Her, I Became the King’s Princess

The wolf receded slowly. I felt her pull back into me, silver-white fur dissolving, bones reshaping. The shift reversed itself in waves of pain, but it was nothing compared to the hollow space where the bond used to be. My knees hit the stone floor again. Naked. Shaking. Someone threw a cloak over my shoulders—I didn't see who. Didn't care.

I stood.

Every wolf in the hall was still on their knees. The aura had faded, but the memory of it hung in the air like smoke. I could feel their fear. Taste it.

Devon was the first to rise. His hand left the podium. He straightened, shoulders back, Alpha posture snapping into place like armor. But I saw the tremor in his fingers before he hid them behind his back.

"Get her out of here," he said. His voice was steady. Controlled. The Alpha tone he'd used on me a thousand times before. "This spectacle is over."

I pulled the cloak tighter and met his eyes across the hall.

He looked away first.

That had never happened before.

"You're stressed," he continued, addressing the room now, not me. "The rejection triggered something. A fluke. We'll have the healer examine her and—"

"No."

My voice cut through his. Quiet. Unhurried. I didn't raise it. Didn't need to.

Devon's jaw tightened. "Emerie—"

"I will return," I said. Each word precise. Deliberate. "Not as your mate. As your judge."

Silence.

Fallon laughed. It was a sharp, brittle sound. "She's delusional," she said, leaning into Devon's side, his mark fresh and red on her neck. "The bond breaking must have—"

"Broken more than the bond," I finished for her. I looked at her directly for the first time. She stopped laughing.

Devon scoffed. Forced. Too loud. "You don't have the authority to judge anyone, Emerie. You're packless now. Wolfless—" He caught himself. "You were wolfless. Whatever that was—"

"Was mine," I said. "And you'll see her again."

I turned. Walked toward the hall's exit. My legs shook, but I didn't let it show. One foot in front of the other. The cloak dragged behind me.

Behind me, Devon's voice rose. "Remove her from pack territory. Now. She's no longer welcome here."

I didn't look back.

But I heard the murmurs. The allied Alphas who'd felt that aura, who'd gone to their knees without choosing to. They weren't laughing. They were whispering.

I walked out of the banquet hall alone. Head high. The cold night air hit my skin, but I barely felt it.

I had one stop to make before I left.

Maren Cole's clinic sat at the edge of pack territory. Small. Unassuming. I'd been there dozens of times over the years. After the miscarriage. After the pack runs that left me bleeding. After every injury Devon decided wasn't worth his attention.

She opened the door before I knocked.

"I knew you'd come," she said quietly. Her eyes scanned me—checking for injuries out of habit. "Are you—"

"I need the records," I said.

She nodded. Didn't ask which ones. She'd kept them sealed for three years, waiting for the day I'd be ready to use them. Waiting for the day I'd have the power to make them matter.

She disappeared into the back room. Returned with a sealed envelope. Thick. Official healer's stamp on the outside.

"Everything's in there," she said. "The miscarriage. The wolfsbane markers in your bloodwork. The compound analysis. Dates. Dosages." She paused. "Fallon's signature on the dietary logs."

I took the envelope. My hands didn't shake.

"Thank you," I said.

Maren's expression was careful. Guarded. "What are you going to do?"

"What I should have done six years ago," I said. "Choose myself."

She smiled. Sad. Relieved. "Good."

I left before she could say anything else.

---

The convoy arrived at 2:14 AM.

I was standing outside the pack house, the sealed records in my hands, when the first vehicle rolled through the gates. Lycan crest on the doors. Black, sleek, built for speed and intimidation. Three more followed.

Devon was already on the steps. Fallon beside him, wrapped in a robe, his mark still visible on her neck. Warriors flanked them—his Gamma, his Delta commanders. All of them tense.

The lead vehicle stopped. The door opened.

Six enforcers stepped out. Lycan Crown insignia on their chests. Wolves whose size made Devon's Alpha form look average. They moved with the kind of precision that didn't need to announce itself.

The lead enforcer—tall, scarred, grey streaking his dark hair—stepped forward. His eyes found me immediately.

"Emerie Ashwood," he said. Not a question.

"Yes," I said.

Devon laughed. It sounded wrong. Forced. "What is this? Did you hire rogues to play dress-up, Emerie? You think some costumes and fake crests are going to—"

The enforcer didn't look at him.

Neither did I.

"We've been sent by Lycan King Thomas Ashford," the enforcer said. His voice was formal. Unyielding. "You are to come with us. Immediately."

Devon stepped forward. "She's packless. She has no authority to summon anyone, least of all—"

"We were not summoned by her," the enforcer said. Still not looking at Devon. "We were summoned by the King."

Silence.

Fallon's hand tightened on Devon's arm. "This is insane," she hissed. "She's lying. She's—"

"The King does not lie," the enforcer said. His tone didn't change. "And neither do we."

I walked down the steps. Past Devon. Past Fallon. Past the warriors who'd watched me scrub floors and train their ranks and bleed for this pack.

Devon called after me. "Emerie. You've lost your mind. You know that, right? You think you can just walk away and—"

I stopped. Turned.

Looked at him one last time.

"I already did," I said.

Then I walked to the lead vehicle. The enforcer opened the door. I got in, the sealed records still in my hands.

The door closed.

Through the tinted window, I saw Devon standing on the steps, Fallon beside him, both of them staring. The convoy started to move.

I didn't look back.
