Chapter 1 of When My Alpha Chose Her, I Became the King’s Princess

The bond broke at exactly 9:47 PM, three days before what should have been our seventh anniversary.

I felt it in my body first—not my heart, not my head. The mark on my neck went cold. Not numb. Cold, like someone had pressed a chip of ice directly against the scar tissue Devon's teeth had never touched. Then hollow. Empty in a way that made my stomach lurch, because emptiness isn't supposed to have weight, but this one did. It felt like a door slamming shut in a room I didn't know I was standing in.

I was at the edge of the great hall. Hundreds of wolves packed the space—allied Alphas, their Lunas, warriors in formal dress. The Ironvale Pack Banquet. Our elevation to regional status. I'd helped draft the petition that made tonight possible, trained the warriors whose discipline impressed the visiting Betas, negotiated the alliances Devon would take credit for in his speech. I stood in the back in a plain grey dress with no pack crest, no Luna's circlet, nothing that said I belonged to the man on the stage.

I told myself it didn't matter. Tonight he would finally say my name. Acknowledge what I was to him. The bond hummed faintly in my chest, that stubborn, stupid hope I could never quite kill.

Devon stepped up to the microphone. The hall went silent. He looked good—Alpha posture, shoulders back, the kind of presence that made people listen. I felt the pull even now, even after six years of learning that the pull didn't mean safety.

He smiled at the crowd. "Thank you all for being here tonight."

I waited.

"This elevation is the result of years of hard work, strategic alliances, and the strength of every wolf in this pack."

My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat against my sides.

"But before we celebrate, there's something I need to address."

The bond stirred. I felt it like a hand brushing against my ribs from the inside.

Devon's eyes swept the room and landed on me for half a second. No warmth. No recognition. Just a flicker of something that might have been irritation, or relief that this part was almost over.

"I, Devon Hale, Alpha of the Ironvale Pack," he said, voice steady and formal, "reject you, Emerie Ashwood, as my mate."

The cold mark on my neck turned to ice. Then it cracked.

I didn't hear the rest of the words. The bond didn't snap—it tore, like fabric ripping down the center, threads pulling apart one by one. My knees buckled. I hit the stone floor hard, palms slapping against the ground, and the pain wasn't in my hands. It was everywhere. My chest felt like someone had reached inside and yanked something vital loose. The mark on my neck burned now, a searing line of agony where the cold had been, and I couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't do anything but feel the bond shredding itself inside me.

Somewhere above me, the crowd was reacting. Gasps. Murmurs. I couldn't focus on any of it.

Devon's voice cut through again, rough and triumphant. "And I claim you, Fallon Mercer, as my Luna and mate."

I forced my head up. Vision blurred, but I saw it: Devon turning to Fallon, her face lit with satisfaction, the gown she wore cut like a Luna's, his crest already pinned to her shoulder. He pulled her close. Sank his teeth into her neck.

The crowd erupted. Applause. Cheers.

Fallon looked down at me. Our eyes met. She smiled.

Something inside me snapped.

Not the bond—that was already gone, a hollow space where the connection used to hum. This was different. Deeper. A lock I didn't know existed, breaking open.

My bones started to crack.

It wasn't a shift. I'd never shifted. I didn't have a wolf. Everyone knew that. Devon knew that. It was why he could do this, why I was disposable, why—

My spine arched. Another crack, louder this time, and pain exploded down my back. My hands on the floor started to change—fingers elongating, nails thickening into claws. I tried to scream, but the sound that came out wasn't human.

The wolf erupted from me like a detonation.

Silver-white. Massive. I felt her surge upward, felt my body reshape itself around her, and the agony of the shift was nothing compared to the agony of the bond breaking, so I let it happen. Let her come.

The great hall went silent.

Then, one by one, every wolf in the room dropped to their knees.

Not bowing. Forced. I felt it—the aura pouring off me, off her, a wave of power so strong it didn't ask for submission. It demanded it.

Devon staggered. His hand went to the podium to steady himself. His Alpha authority, the thing he wore like armor, dissolved against the pressure. He looked at me—at her—and for the first time in six years, I saw fear in his eyes.

At the edge of the hall, a man in formal grey stood frozen. I didn't know him. Lycan King's insignia on his chest. His nostrils flared. He caught my scent.

His lips moved. I heard the words even through the chaos, even through the wolf's rage thrumming in my skull.

"My King," he whispered into a mind-link I shouldn't have been able to hear. "We found her."
