The eastern tree line was still dark when I finished my last lap. Five miles. Same route every morning, same pace, same silence. I started running this perimeter back when Crescentfire was nothing but a handful of tents and a fire pit in the middle of upstate New York wilderness. Back when I was packless, wolfless in every way that mattered, and the only thing keeping me moving was the stubborn, ugly refusal to stop. Now the pack house rose behind me — solid timber and stone, lights coming on in the upper windows as the early risers started their day — and I still ran the same route. Some habits you keep not because you need them anymore, but because they remind you where you came from. I was cooling down near the training yard when Marcus found me. Chapter 1 of When His Luna Betrayed Him to Help My Pack

My Gamma moved like a former rogue — quiet, economical, always aware of every exit. He'd been with me since the second month, when I pulled him out of a border skirmish with a pack that had no business claiming that territory. He hadn't asked to join Crescentfire. He'd just started showing up for training, and eventually I'd stopped pretending I didn't know why.

"Eastern tree line," he said, falling into step beside me. "Three separate movement signatures overnight. Too spread out to be a single rogue. Too coordinated to be random."

I kept walking. "Patterns?"

"Surveillance. They weren't pushing the border. Just watching it."

I nodded once and filed it away. "Double the eastern rotation starting tonight. Quiet — don't make it look like a response."

Marcus gave me a look that meant he had more to say and was deciding whether to say it. I let him decide. After a moment, he just nodded and peeled off toward the barracks.

I led the morning training session myself. I always did. Some Alphas delegated it; I'd learned early that the pack needed to see me in the yard, sweating alongside them, not watching from a distance. We were forty-three wolves now — rogues, exiles, she-wolves who'd been told they were too broken or too difficult or too much. Every single one of them had earned their place here by surviving something that should have finished them.

I was midway through a sparring demonstration when it hit me.

Cedar and iron.

Faint. Just a thread on the morning wind, barely there. But my wolf knew it before I did — she surged up from somewhere deep and quiet, not in alarm, not in aggression. In recognition. In that awful, aching pull that I had spent two years learning to wall off.

Holden.

I finished the demonstration. I corrected Dani's footwork. I called the session to a close with the same steady voice I always used. And the whole time, my hands were trembling at my sides where no one could see them.

I told no one.

---

He came that evening.

I was in the kitchen — the one place in the pack house that felt genuinely ordinary, flour on the counter, someone's forgotten coffee going cold by the sink — when I felt the shift in the air. Not a sound. Not a scent. Just the particular quality of stillness that meant something had changed.

Joel Pierce was standing in my kitchen doorway.

He looked the same. That was the first thing I noticed, and I hated that I noticed it. Same careful posture, same quiet eyes that always seemed to be listening to something just underneath what you were actually saying. He'd always been good at that — making you feel like he was the only person in the room who truly understood you. It had taken me a long time to understand that the feeling was manufactured.

"Samantha." His voice was low. Soft. The voice he used when he wanted you to lean in.

I went completely still.

"You look well," he said. Like we were running into each other at a coffee shop. Like he hadn't spent eighteen months using our mind-link to make me question whether my own memories were real. "I just wanted to talk. No agenda. I've been thinking about—"

"You have thirty seconds," I said.

He blinked. "Sam—"

"To leave my territory before I classify you as a hostile rogue." I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to. "Twenty-five seconds."

Something moved across his face — not quite hurt, not quite fear. Something more complicated than either. He opened his mouth, closed it. The Joel I'd known would have found the words to reframe this, to make me feel like I was the one being unreasonable. This Joel just looked at me like he was seeing something he hadn't expected and didn't know what to do with.

"I'm not your enemy," he said quietly.

"Fifteen seconds."

He left.

I stood in the kitchen for a long moment after the sound of his footsteps faded into the tree line. Then I poured out the cold coffee, rinsed the mug, and went back to work.

---

Holden came three days later with six wolves and a leather portfolio.

I received him in the meeting hall. My wolves flanked me — Marcus on my left, my two senior warriors at the door. I'd dressed the same way I always did: clean, simple, nothing that performed anything. Holden walked in like he owned the floor beneath his feet, which was the only way he knew how to walk.

He was bigger than I remembered. Or maybe I'd just forgotten what it felt like to be in the same room as him. His Alpha aura pressed against the space like a physical thing, and I felt my wolf stir — not in submission, but in answer. Like recognizing like.

I let him present the full terms. I didn't interrupt. The portfolio was thorough — Ironveil's resources, territorial guarantees, a mutual defense clause that would have positioned Crescentfire as a protected subsidiary pack. It was well-constructed. It was also, underneath all the formal language, a leash.

I set the document down.

"Crescentfire doesn't kneel," I said, "to packs that discard their own."

The silence that followed was absolute. And then my aura came up — not a decision, just a fact, like a tide — and I watched Holden's delegation wolves drop their eyes and bare their throats before they even knew they were doing it.

Holden's jaw tightened. For just a fraction of a second, something raw moved behind his eyes. Not anger. Something older and worse than anger.

Then he picked up the portfolio, turned, and walked out without another word.

I watched him go.

My wolf watched him go too, aching in a way I refused to name out loud.

---

The news spread fast. By the end of the week, I was fielding cautious congratulations from pack leaders who'd never bothered to learn my name before. I read every message carefully, noting the tone, the timing, the subtext.

And I noted the silence.

Drew Bennett's Lycan Court attaché. Nighthollow's diplomatic liaison. Both quiet. Both watching.

That evening I called my inner circle — Marcus, Elara, my two senior warriors — and laid out everything I knew. Coordinated rogue surveillance. Joel's border visit. Holden's alliance play. The silence from the Lycan Court and Nighthollow.

I didn't speculate. I gave them facts and assignments. Marcus would double the eastern rotation. Elara would quietly build up medical stores. Everyone would stay sharp and say nothing outside this room.

After they left, I sat alone in my office for a while.

I opened the locked bottom drawer and looked at the intercept I hadn't shared with anyone: a partial communication suggesting Drew Bennett had been running inquiries about Crescentfire's border vulnerabilities through Nighthollow's intelligence network.

I closed the drawer.

I'd known for two weeks. I'd been waiting to see how long it took them to move.

They were almost ready. So was I.

I Left After My Mate Chose My Sister
I Left After My Mate Chose My Sister
The morning sun filtered through the infirmary windows, casting long shadows across the stone floor. I sat on the edge of the examination table, my fingers nervously twisting the thin cloth of my dress. The Head Healer's face was grave as he studied the scroll in his hands, his eyes darting between the parchment and the strange device he'd used to measure my aura. "Tessa Meyer," he said finally, his voice carrying the weight of decades of practice. "I've completed your pre-mating examination." Something in his tone made my heart stutter. I'd expected the usual clearance, the standard blessing before tomorrow's ceremony with Max. Instead, I saw the deep furrows of concern etched into his weathered face. "What's wrong?" I asked, though part of me already knew I didn't want the answer. He set the scroll down carefully, as if it contained something fragile and dangerous. "Your aura readings indicate a condition we call Wolfsbane Rot." The words hung in the air between us, heavy and suffocating.
