Chapter 1 of When He Came, the Wedding Feast Had Ended

1: 1

At Rose Delgado's eightieth birthday dinner, she slipped the heirloom jade bracelet off her wrist.

By the Delgado family's rule, that bracelet passed only to the eldest grandson's wife.

Every eye in the room turned to me, and the teasing started right on cue.

"Seven years now. Time to put it on Fel!"

"Once she wears the bracelet, she's family!"

Philip Delgado was nudged forward until he stood in front of me.

I lifted my wrist, my whole face bright with joy, waiting for him to marry me.

Instead he took the bracelet and turned and handed it to the assistant beside him.

"Doris Winfield has slender wrists. Let her hold on to it for Grandmother first."

He ruffled my hair. "What's the rush? It'll be yours sooner or later."

In the roomful of laughter, I watched that girl cradle the brocade box like she couldn't believe her luck.

Philip didn't know there was no time left.

In a few days I'd be wearing another family's bridal crown.

...

Under the table, Rose's hand felt its way over.

It closed tight around mine.

I turned my hand and folded hers into my palm, patting it twice, gently.

Telling her I was fine.

The birthday guest of honor, an elder of the Delgado family, could not throw down her chopsticks at her own banquet.

She could hold it in.

So could I.

A few steps away, Doris hugged the brocade box to her chest.

The eyes of every relative at the table pinned her where she stood, and still she showed no fluster.

A slight bow, her voice clear and crisp.

"I'll keep it safe for the old madam for now."

Familiar with the place, like she was half its mistress.

Philip was already lifting his glass, going around to toast his uncles one by one.

That burst of teasing had been like a gust of wind, blowing through and gone.

Only I knew that where the wind had passed, something had broken.

Before the longevity noodles were served, custom called for a family photo.

The photographer arranged everyone, elders in the center, children and grandchildren to either side.

When he got to me, he paused with the camera raised. "Is this one... family, or a friend?"

The courtyard went quiet for a beat.

Philip started to speak, and then he heard my calm voice.

"A friend."

Two words, clipped clean and correct.

Just the way he'd taught me these past years.

"Fel, until we're married, by family rule you're my friend."

"Then the friend can stand over here. Don't block anyone."

The photographer let out a breath and waved me to the very edge.

Doris caught the frown on Philip's face and, sharp-eyed as ever, picked up the spare camera.

"Let me take a few extra shots for everyone!"

"Fel, could you hold the dog? The dog's blocked."

Before the cake was cut, Rose asked me to go light incense with her.

The family shrine was hushed, one thread of sandalwood smoke rising.

"This bracelet." The old woman set three sticks of incense into the burner.

"Your great-grandfather had a craftsman make it back then. Gold-veined jade, wound nine times. Each turn wards one life safe."

"I wore it sixty years. Never off my wrist."

She raised her hand.

A pale ring pressed into the flesh.

"Seven years ago, it was here too." Rose looked at the ancestral tablets, her voice slow. "Philip lit the incense and swore that within three years he'd bring you through the Delgado door."

"The ancestors heard it."

"And I've been keeping it for you too."

A length of incense ash dropped away without a sound.

"Fel." She turned to look at me. "I've done you wrong."

"You haven't."

The moment those words left me, I heard something inside me split, softly, along one seam.

The banquet broke up, guests filing out one after another.

Philip stood at the foot of the steps arranging cars. "Take Secretary Winfield back to the city first. She has work in the morning. Drive steady."

Then one more reminder.

"Message me when you're there."

Doris got into the car with the brocade box in her arms, waving toward us through the window.

Behind me, two of the aunts lowered their voices. "She's only been at the company a year, hasn't she? And she's brought to a family dinner?"

"Right? Follows him everywhere. Someone who didn't know better would think she'd been brought to meet the..."

They caught sight of me, and the voices cut off.

I pretended not to hear and bent to clear the bowls off the table.

The drive back to the city was long.

Philip leaned into the back seat with his eyes closed, the glow of his phone screen flickering across his face.

Not a word the whole way.

In the elevator, he tucked the phone back into his pocket.

"Don't take today to heart."

He watched the floor numbers climb, his tone easy.

"Taking the bracelet in front of a whole room of relatives, it's like putting on a show. I didn't want it to be that forced."

"A thing like this only counts when I put it on you myself, at our own engagement dinner."

"Once I'm through this busy stretch."

Wait.

In seven years, how many times he'd said that word, I never counted.

I only knew the pale ring on Grandmother's wrist had almost smoothed away.

And the bracelet had never once been on mine.

The elevator arrived, and I stepped out first.

"Philip, I'm tired."
