Chapter 1 of My Voice Saved the Show. My Ex and His New Girlfriend Were Just Spectators

I recorded 365 bedtime stories so my four-year-old wouldn’t miss me during my night flights.

I curated his allergies, paid the bills from airport terminals, and made sure my husband Lucas never had to worry.

When my flight was canceled, I came home early, hoping to surprise them.

Instead, I found Lucas and our son’s kindergarten teacher, Sophie, tangled in my blanket fort.

Sophie was holding my star-shaped player, narrating my story, while my son hugged her tight.

"Mommy Sophie tells it better," my son said, pointing at the door. "You can go fly."

Lucas didn't correct him; he just told me I couldn't expect a child to love a plastic recorder forever.

I didn't scream or cry.

I walked over, picked up the dead star player, and dropped my house keys on the nightstand.

"And the brave little star flew all the way home, just to see her favorite boy."

The high, overly sweet voice drifted from inside the blanket fort in the center of the nursery.

I froze in the doorway. The limited-edition robot I had hunted down in Tokyo felt heavy against my ribs. I had traded shifts with two different girls just to make it back a day early.

That wasn't my voice.

My husband, Lucas, was tucked inside the dimly lit tent. He sat shoulder-to-shoulder with Ben's kindergarten music teacher, Sophie. She held the yellow plastic star player I had recorded myself before my last flight. She was mimicking my exact cadence.

Ben shifted. His messy blonde curls caught the soft glow of the fairy lights strung above them. He spotted me standing there in my rumpled flight attendant uniform.

He didn't run to me. He didn't smile.

Instead, he shrank back. He buried his face into Sophie's floral cardigan.

"Mommy Sophie tells it better," my four-year-old said. His clear voice pierced the quiet room. "You can go on the airplane."

Ice flooded my veins. I tightened my grip on the toy box until my knuckles ached.

I snapped my gaze to Lucas. I waited for him to scold Ben. I waited for him to correct that absurd title.

Lucas merely frowned. He dragged a hand down his jaw and sat up, knocking a pillow aside.

"Don't give him that look," Lucas said. His tone carried a thick layer of condescension. "The kid just needs stable companionship."

"She's his music teacher," I whispered. The words scratched my throat.

"And she's here," Lucas shot back. "You can't expect him to love you through a tape recorder forever."

"I expect my son to know who his mother is," I said.

"He knows who shows up," Lucas countered. He didn't even have the decency to look ashamed. He looked annoyed.

My eyes drifted past his defensive posture. Over by the wooden toy box, the spare batteries and charging cord for my star player lay tangled in the dust.

Discarded.

They hadn't even bothered to recharge it. They just replaced the voice.

Sophie sat rigid. Her knuckles turned pale around the yellow plastic star.

"Grace, I was just helping out," she stammered. She offered a weak, trembling smile. "Ben missed you, and Lucas was so tired. We didn't mean any harm."

"Give me the player," I said.

"Grace, come on," Lucas groaned. He rubbed his temples. "Don't make this a thing. You just walked in the door. Are you really going to start a fight in front of Ben?"

I didn't yell. I didn't cry.

I stepped into the room. My sensible work shoes sank into the plush carpet. I walked straight up to the blanket fort.

I reached out and snatched the dead star player right out of her hands.

"Hey!" Lucas barked. "What is your problem?"

I flipped the plastic toy over. I popped the back panel off and dug my fingernail under the tiny SD card.

With a sharp flick, I pulled the memory card free. I slid it into my uniform pocket and dropped the empty yellow shell onto the mattress.

"Mommy Sophie!" Ben wailed, grabbing onto her arm.

Sophie wrapped her arms around him, casting a pathetic, pleading look at Lucas.

"You're scaring him," Lucas snapped.

I turned on my heel and walked straight down the hall.

I pushed the master bedroom door open. I dragged my largest hardshell suitcase from the closet and threw it onto the bed.

"Are you seriously doing this right now?" Lucas demanded. He leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest.

I yanked open my dresser. I grabbed handfuls of clothes. Sweaters, jeans, underwear. I shoved them inside the bag.

"It's a Tuesday night, Grace. Stop throwing a tantrum."

"I'm not throwing a tantrum," I said, my voice eerily calm. "I'm packing."

"You're being dramatic. So Sophie read him a story. Big deal."

"She told him to call her Mommy," I said. I moved to the nightstand. I pulled my passport and birth certificate from the bottom drawer and tossed them on top of the clothes.

"He's four! He doesn't understand what it means."

"He understands that you let her take my place," I said. I met his eyes for the first time since leaving the nursery. "And you didn't correct him."

"Because he finally stopped crying!" Lucas shouted. He followed me into the bathroom. "Do you have any idea how hard it is to put him down when you're halfway across the world? Sophie knows how to soothe him."

I swept my toothbrush, skincare bottles, and hairbrush into a leather pouch.

"So you moved her into my house. Under my blanket fort."

"She's a friend helping out. You're making a huge deal out of nothing," he insisted. "You can't make this ugly just because you feel guilty for never being around."

"I pay the mortgage, Lucas," I said. I zipped my toiletry bag shut. "I work double shifts so you can pretend to be a freelance consultant."

"Don't throw money in my face," he sneered. He grabbed my wrist.

I wrenched my arm free. "Don't touch me."

"Then stop acting like a child. Where are you going to go? You just got off a fourteen-hour flight. You're exhausted. Put the bag away."

I tossed the pouch into the suitcase. I slammed the halves together and pulled the zipper around.

Not a single word left my mouth.

I grabbed the handle and dragged the wheels over the hardwood floor. I headed straight for the entryway.

"Grace!" Lucas shouted. He stepped in front of the front door, blocking my exit. "If you walk out right now, don't expect me to beg you to come back."

I looked at the man I had married five years ago. His jaw was tight. His eyes flashed with arrogant certainty. He thought I was bluffing. He thought I would break down, cry, and apologize for neglecting my family.

I reached into my purse. I pulled out my house key. The metal still carried the warmth of my hand.

I slammed it flat onto the entryway cabinet. The sharp clatter echoed in the silent hallway.

"Move," I said.

He blinked. The flat emptiness in my voice finally seemed to register. He stepped aside.

I opened the front door and walked out into the damp night air. The heavy oak door shut behind me with a final, echoing thud.

A yellow cab idled at the end of the block. I flagged it down. I tossed my bag into the trunk before sliding into the backseat.

"Airport?" the driver asked. He glanced at my uniform in the rearview mirror.

"Downtown," I replied. I pulled my phone from my pocket.

The cab pulled into traffic. Through the rear window, the house disappeared behind a row of wet trees. I rested one hand over the memory card in my pocket and did not look back.
