Chapter 1 of Two Surgeries and an Alpha Husband's Choice

Before Cole, I was the eighteen-year-old healer trainee nobody expected to become Luna.

Cole chose me anyway.

He marked me before the entire Grayridge Pack, put his family ring on my hand, and told three-year-old Finn that I was home now.

For six years, I raised Finn as my own, gave up my healer training to steady Cole's new reign, and never once regretted it.

Then Emma Reed came back.

She was Cole's first love, injured, alone, and suddenly present at every family meal.

When my pregnancy reached five months, Cole missed my prenatal scan because Emma had a surgical consult.

Finn made her a good-luck card and asked me not to be jealous.

That night, I heard their voices through Cole's half-open study door.

“Emma's surgery is next week,” Finn said.

“I'll be there,” Cole answered.

“What if Mom needs you too?”

“Serena is my mate. She'll understand.”

“And if she doesn't?”

“Then she'll have to.”

I slid the second untouched dinner plate back into the cabinet just as my phone buzzed against the marble counter.

Emma's pre-op check is running late. You and Finn eat without me.

I stared at Cole's message, then at the white envelope half-hidden inside my purse. My five-month ultrasound photo was tucked inside. The technician had printed two copies because Cole had promised he would come straight from council training and hold my hand while we learned whether the baby was a boy or a girl.

He never arrived.

Emma called from the private clinic ten minutes before my appointment. Her old spinal injury had started aching again, and apparently that outranked the child I was carrying.

"Did Dad text?" Finn asked from the kitchen island.

My nine-year-old son had green construction paper spread around his elbows. In the center of the page, he had drawn a silver wolf with crooked legs and written GOOD LUCK, EMMA in block letters.

"He's still at the clinic," I said.

Finn chewed the end of a blue crayon. "Is her surgery really dangerous?"

"The doctors think it will help her old injury."

"She said she might never shift again if it goes wrong."

I looked at him more carefully. "She told you that?"

He nodded. "Yesterday. She said wolves who can't shift get lonely because everyone else runs without them."

A cold knot formed beneath my ribs.

Six years earlier, Cole had placed the Alpha's mate ring on my finger in front of the Grayridge elders. Soon after, we adopted three-year-old Finn when his biological mother died and no close relatives could take him. I was the one who sat through every night terror and every first-shift fever. I taught him to tie his shoes, packed his school lunches, and waited outside the healer's room the first time his wolf pushed too hard against his bones.

Emma had been back in Grayridge for six weeks.

That was apparently enough time to teach him that her loneliness was his responsibility.

"Finn," I said, sitting beside him, "you can care about Emma without carrying her fear for her. The adults and healers are responsible for her surgery. Not you."

He frowned. "Dad says Alphas protect people who don't have anyone."

"Your father is right about protecting people. But protection doesn't mean one person's needs erase everyone else's."

Finn's eyes moved toward my belly and then away.

"Are you mad he missed the scan?"

The honest answer was yes.

I had been angry when Cole left our anniversary dinner to take Emma a heating pad because the staff one was "too stiff." I had been angry when he moved three council meetings around her therapy schedule but told me the prenatal class could not be changed. I had been angry when Emma began appearing at breakfast in the Alpha residence wearing one of Cole's old academy sweatshirts.

But anger around Finn had started coming back to me in his anxious questions, as if my feelings were another emergency he had to solve.

"I'm disappointed," I said. "That's between your father and me."

The front door opened at eight-thirty.

Cole walked in smelling of rain and antiseptic. His dark sweater was damp at the shoulders.

Finn slid off the stool. "Dad! Did Emma like my card?"

Cole's tired face softened. "She loved it. She put it next to her bed."

He ruffled Finn's hair and then noticed the covered dinner plates.

"You didn't have to wait."

"We didn't."

I took the ultrasound envelope from my purse and laid it on the island.

Cole looked at it. Guilt flickered across his face.

"Serena—"

"We found out the sex today."

He closed his eyes briefly. "I know. I'm sorry. Emma's surgeon changed the pre-op workup. She panicked when they mentioned nerve testing."

"So you stayed for four hours."

"She has nobody else here."

The phrase had become his answer to everything.

I slid the envelope toward him. "Open it."

His hand moved toward the flap.

His phone rang.

Emma's name lit the screen.

Cole stopped.

I watched the decision happen before he even answered.

"I need to take this."

"Of course you do."

He frowned at my tone, but he was already walking toward the study.

Finn lingered beside the island, looking from the unopened ultrasound to the closed study door.

"Mom," he whispered, "if Emma can't shift anymore, does that mean Dad has to take care of her forever?"

I pressed my palm over the envelope.

"No," I said. "It means she will have to build a life that works for her, like anyone else."

Finn nodded, but he did not look convinced.

Cole remained in the study for nearly forty minutes. By the time he came out, Finn was asleep upstairs and I had put the ultrasound back in my purse.

"Her surgery is the day after tomorrow," Cole said. "I need to be her medical contact."

"Why you?"

"Because the clinic requires someone with Alpha authority if her wolf destabilizes."

"She has a private surgeon, a lawyer, and half the council offering help. She is not alone."

Cole dragged a hand through his hair. "Why does this always have to become a competition with you?"

"Because you keep placing us on opposite sides and asking me not to notice."

His jaw tightened. "I am going to bed. We can talk when you're calmer."

He walked upstairs without asking about the baby again.

At 11:16, my phone lit on the nightstand.

A message from Emma.

Serena, we should settle this before my surgery. Tomorrow at the Luna Gallery. Come alone.

A second message arrived before I could reply.

I think I finally found a permanent solution to the problem between us.

I stared at the words until the screen dimmed. The phrase permanent solution did not sound like reconciliation. It sounded like a challenge, and I had learned not to meet Emma's challenges without a record.

Then I opened the camera app, checked that audio recording was enabled, and set my alarm for noon.
