The small sedan spun violently.

The next thing I knew, I was in the hospital.

What broke me was hearing a doctor by my ear, expressing his regrets.

My mind exploded. I tried with all my might to speak.

'Who's a vegetable?'

'You quack! Just do a proper examination!'

But no one could hear me.

Everything was pitch-black. My eyelids felt like they weighed a thousand pounds.

After the doctor left, I heard more voices in the room.

I think it was my mother. She was stroking my forehead.

Her palm was warm and comforting.

"Oh, you poor child... Mr. Vaughn, do you think we were just never meant to be in her life?"

My father was silent for a moment. Then, unbelievably, he chuckled.

I tried again to force my eyes open.

'Raina Shane, wake up! Now!'

'Think how heartbroken they'll be!'

But his next words plunged me into an icy abyss.

"This is for the best."

"Now that she's a vegetable, she can donate a kidney directly to our Sylvie."

"That was the whole reason we brought her back anyway. Now we don't have to waste our breath trying to convince her. We just need to make sure she's kept on a nutrient drip here in the hospital, and that'll be that."

I could feel goosebumps erupt all over my skin.

So cold. Why was the room so cold?

'My own parents... brought me back just to donate a kidney to Sylvia Vaughn?'
