Chapter 1 of The Stranger My Husband Paid to Ruin Me

I kissed the stranger because, for one reckless minute, he looked at me like I was not a wife being erased.

His hand stopped at my waist before it became a promise.

Mine did not.

The flash came from behind the marble column.

Then my husband stepped out holding eight glossy photos, each one stamped with the date, the time, and the name of the hotel bar where he had sent me.

Victor smiled like he had won a trial before it started.

He placed a property waiver on the table and tapped the line where my signature should go.

The stranger stood ten feet away, pale, silent, with a tiny black earpiece still in his ear.

That was when I understood the kiss had not been temptation.

It had been evidence.

Victor said, "Sign, Sloane."

I looked at the man I had just kissed and asked, "How much did he pay you?"

"My wife. She restores things," Victor Kline told the museum trustee, not even glancing back at me.

He took Mara Ellison by the elbow and guided her past the velvet rope into the main gallery.

Mara laughed, her voice carrying across the marble floor. "Still useful for soft lighting, isn't she?"

I tucked the unsigned separation petition, file NK-117, deeper into the satin lining of my clutch. My thumb pressed against the embossed card for Nora Keats, my divorce lawyer. Five years ago, I signed a blue notary folder and pledged my Lake Geneva cottage to cover Victor's nine-hundred-thousand-dollar bond shortfall. Tonight, I was only here to audit the final list of joint art assets before serving him.

On the white wall beside me hung the nineteenth-century silver-leaf landscape I spent four months repairing. The gallery tag read $42,000.

A waiter stumbled near the archway, a tray of Cabernet tipping straight toward my silk dress.

A broad shoulder cut in front of me, taking the splash across a dark charcoal sleeve.

"Watch your step," the man said to the server, his tone flat and steady.

He turned to me, pulling a clean gray handkerchief from his breast pocket. "You are untouched."

"Your jacket is ruined," I said.

"It is wool. It dries." He handed me the cloth anyway. His badge read D. Cross, Security Consultant. His eyes flicked to the wall behind me. "Nineteenth-century leafing. Most people use modern gold foil and ruin the patina. You matched the oxidation."

I stepped back half a pace.

He stayed where he was, keeping the distance between us.

"You know restoration?" I asked.

"I know when something valuable has been patched together after a break," Damian said. "You look like you are waiting for an exit."

"Do you sell exits, Mr. Cross?"

He pointed toward the brass-handled fire door behind the pillar. "That one leads to the alley. No press, no trustees."

"I have business inside first."

Across the atrium, Victor's reflection stared back from the floor-to-ceiling glass. His phone flashed with an incoming alert. I assumed it was his usual surveillance, his need to control every square foot I occupied. I did not notice the tiny black bud seated in Damian's left ear.

A microphone squealed in the grand salon.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Victor's voice boomed through the speakers. He stood on the raised platform, one hand resting on Mara's bare shoulder. "Tonight, VK Holdings officially takes control of the North River warehouse and its inventory. We consider my wife's three-hundred-and-twenty-thousand-dollar seed funding as standard family liquidity."

The room applauded politely.

He had just announced the theft of my private studio into a live microphone.

I set my untouched drink on a passing tray and walked out the French doors onto the terrace. The autumn wind cut through my sleeveless dress.

Footsteps sounded against the wet stone. Damian stopped two paces behind me.

"Does he do that often?" Damian asked quietly.

"He takes what is not his and calls it a partnership." My throat tightened. "Are you here to guard the door or watch me drown?"

"Neither," he said, stepping closer. "You do not have to kiss anyone to prove you are still alive, Sloane."

The sentence struck me like an open hand.

I reached out, grabbed the lapels of his coat, and pulled him down to me.

My mouth pressed against his.

Damian froze under my grip, then his mouth answered with heavy pressure that blocked out the cold air. His hands came up, resting firmly against the side of my ribcage, but his palms never crossed the seam at the back of my dress.

A sharp click echoed from behind the stone pillar.

A flash of white light cut the dark.

I pulled away instantly. Damian did not move, his jaw set hard as he looked past my shoulder.

Victor stepped out from behind the ivy-covered column, holding a thick manila envelope.

"Right on schedule," Victor said, clapping his hands together twice.

"Get inside," Victor ordered, his voice dropping to a harsh rasp.

He shoved open the door to a private lounge and threw the envelope onto the glass coffee table. Eight glossy color photographs spilled out across the surface like a winning poker hand.

Every single one showed me and Damian.

The first was outside the Carlyle Hotel at two in the morning on Tuesday. The second was in the parking garage on Thursday. The last three were from twenty seconds ago on the terrace, capturing my hands gripped in Damian's collar, my lips parted against his.

"Look at that," Victor sneered, tapping the glossy paper with his signet ring. "Gross marital misconduct. Adultery on Morgan House property."

"You staged this," I said, my voice shaking with rage.

"I managed risk," Victor corrected. He pulled a crisp legal document from his breast pocket and laid it beside a black pen. "This is a full property waiver. You surrender the North River warehouse, your shares in the art fund, and all claims to the four-point-eight-million-dollar gallery valuation. Sign it."

"And if I refuse?"

"These eight photos hit the board of directors and the morning tabloids at six o'clock sharp," Victor said. "You leave this marriage with nothing but legal fees and a ruined reputation."

I turned to look at Damian. He stood near the door, his face drained of color, his gaze fixed on the floor.

"You hired him," I whispered.

Victor laughed. "He takes cash for jobs, Sloane. You take lust for mistakes. He was on my payroll before you walked through the front gate tonight."

I stared at Damian. A faint red light pulsed on the black receiver tucked inside his left ear.

"Sign the paper, Sloane," Victor snapped, thrusting the pen toward my fingers. "We are done here."

I did not touch the pen.

I stepped straight toward Damian. He did not pull away as I reached up and yanked the black earpiece out of his ear.

I brought the tiny speaker to my ear.

Victor's recorded voice came crackling through the line: "Make her sign. Now."
