Chapter 1 of My Husband Stole Our Company for His Mistress

The rooftop was perfect. That's what I kept thinking as I stood under the string lights, champagne bubbles rising in thin glasses all around me. The Manhattan skyline glittered behind us like a promise. Like proof. We made it, I thought. We actually made it.

I smoothed my hands down the front of my gown. The lace was delicate under my fingers. Vintage Chanel, 1960s. My mother wore it when she married my father. She died when I was sixteen, and this dress was the only thing I asked to keep. I had it cleaned, preserved, stored in acid-free tissue for years. Tonight, I finally got to wear it. The bodice fit like it was made for me. The tulle skirt caught the breeze and shimmered in the candlelight.

Across the rooftop, Nolan raised his glass. His smile was wide, easy. He looked like a man who owned the world. I smiled back. My chest felt tight with happiness.

"To Everly and Nolan!" someone shouted. Glasses clinked. Laughter rippled through the crowd. I saw faces I recognized from the office, investors we'd pitched in cramped coffee shops years ago, friends who remembered the Brooklyn basement. They remembered the frozen lasagna dinners. The space heater that barely worked. The nights we stayed up until 3 a.m., building pitch decks on a laptop with a cracked screen.

Nolan crossed the rooftop and pulled me close. His hand rested on my waist. "You look incredible," he murmured.

"It's my mom's dress," I said softly. "I wanted her here tonight. This was the closest I could get."

He kissed my forehead. "She'd be proud of you."

I believed him.

The DJ announced the sparkler send-off. Guests lined up on either side of the pathway, little golden sparklers fizzing in their hands. I felt giddy. Nolan took my hand and we started walking through the tunnel of light. People cheered. Cameras flashed. I laughed, tilting my head back, feeling like I was inside a dream I didn't want to wake up from.

Then I felt the heat.

It happened fast. A sparkler tilted too close. The flame caught the tulle on my right side. The fabric lit up like paper. I screamed. The fire spread across the hem, up toward the bodice. I tried to pat it out but the lace caught next. Guests rushed forward. Someone threw champagne on me. Another person ripped off their jacket and smothered the flames.

When the fire died, I stood there shaking. The gown was destroyed. Black scorch marks crawled up the skirt. The lace bodice was singed and torn. The smell of burnt fabric filled my nose. My hands were trembling so hard I couldn't make them stop.

"Oh my God," a voice said. Soft. Breathless. "I'm so, so sorry."

I turned. Jade Simpson stood two feet away, sparkler still in her hand. Her eyes were wide. A single tear rolled down her cheek. She pressed her fingers to her mouth. "I didn't mean to," she whispered. "It was an accident. I swear."

I stared at her. Jade. Nolan's executive assistant. Twenty-four years old, with perfect skin and a voice that always sounded like she was apologizing for existing. She'd been at the office for eight months. She worked late. She brought Nolan coffee without being asked. She laughed at his jokes and called him "Mr. Crawford" in meetings, but "Nolan" when it was just the three of us.

She was standing right next to me during the send-off. Right next to me.

"You burned my mother's dress," I said. My voice cracked. "This was my mother's dress."

"I know," she said, tears streaming now. "I'm so sorry, Everly. I feel terrible."

I turned to Nolan. He'd know. He'd understand. He knew what this dress meant. He was there the night I showed it to him, the night I told him I wanted to wear it on our wedding day. He held me while I cried about my mom. He promised me the wedding would be perfect.

"Nolan," I said. My throat was tight. "She burned it. She burned my mom's dress."

He stepped forward. For a second, I thought he was coming to me. But he moved past me. He put his hand on Jade's shoulder. "Hey," he said gently. "It's okay. It was an accident."

I blinked. "What?"

He turned to me. His jaw was tight. "Everly, stop. You're making a scene."

"Making a scene?" I repeated. My voice rose. "Nolan, look at my dress!"

"It was an accident," he said again, louder this time. He looked at the guests, at the phones still recording. He forced a smile. "These things happen, right? No one's hurt. That's what matters."

Jade sniffled behind him. He squeezed her shoulder.

I felt cold. The rooftop was warm, but I felt cold all the way through.

"She's upset," Jade said quietly, looking at Nolan. "I understand. I'd be upset too."

"Of course you're upset," Nolan said to me. His tone was careful. Controlled. Like he was talking to a child. "But it's done. Let's not ruin the whole night over it."

I stared at him. At his hand still on her shoulder. At the way he positioned himself between us, like he was protecting her. From me.

"Let's get you cleaned up," he said. He gestured toward the door. "Go change. I'll handle things here."

I didn't move.

"Everly," he said. His voice had an edge now. "Go."

I went.

I sat alone in the bridal suite for two hours. I peeled off what was left of the gown and stared at it on the floor. The black scorch marks looked like claw marks. I called Nolan three times. He didn't answer. I texted him. No response.

Finally, my phone buzzed. A text.

*Can't come back yet. Promised Jade I'd take her to the VIP club event in Long Island tonight. She's been having a rough week. I'll see you at home later.*

I read it twice. Then a third time.

He left. On our wedding night. To take Jade to a car show.

I opened Instagram. My hands were shaking again. I searched Jade's profile. Her story loaded. A video. Neon lights. Luxury cars. A matte-black Porsche in the background. Nolan's Porsche. The geo-tag read: *Elite Motor Club – Long Island*.

I grabbed my coat. I didn't change. I got in my car and drove.

The club was loud. Music thumped from inside a warehouse. Cars lined the lot, engines growling. I parked in the shadows and walked toward the crowd. I scanned faces. I saw Jade first. She was laughing, head tilted back, hand on someone's arm. Then I saw him.

Nolan.

He had her pressed against the hood of his Porsche. His hands were in her hair. Her arms were around his neck. Their mouths were locked together. He kissed her like he was starving. Like she was the only thing in the world.

I stood there in the dark and watched my husband kiss another woman on our wedding night.

And I knew. This wasn't new. This wasn't a mistake.

This was who he'd been all along.
