Chapter 1 of The Stand-in Mate

I had been bound to Kaiden Fenwick—my brother’s closest friend—for seven winters. In the quiet of the old pack woods, we had spoken of union, of marking beneath the silver moon, of standing before the Alpha as mated pair. It was a secret even the wind was not meant to carry.

That night, I followed his scent-thread through the forest, the pull of his wolf steady in my chest. It led me to the gathering hall where the elders of his circle met.

I stopped outside the carved stone door.

Voices seeped through.

“Kaiden Fenwick,” someone said with a low laugh, “your fated mate has returned. What will you do about that stand-in little sister?”

Kaiden did not answer.

The silence that followed was heavier than iron.

Then another voice, sharp with amusement, cut in. “Truly bold of you, Kaiden. You dared court the Alpha’s sister while waiting for your Moon-chosen mate to return. Used her warmth for years… and now Mirella has come back.”

A second chuckle followed. “She left without hesitation back then. She deserves a stand-in to remind her what she abandoned.”

Something inside me went still.

Mirella.

The name was not new. It was carved into old stories, whispered by the elders when they spoke of Kaiden’s true fated bond—one marked by the Moonstone long before I was ever foolish enough to believe I mattered.

I turned away before the conversation ended. Wolves do not cry where they might be seen.

**

The next day, Kaiden brought me to Mirella’s return banquet beneath the ancestral hall where moonlight poured through open rafters.

He was gentle in front of the pack. Always gentle when eyes were watching.

His hand rested at my back, his voice soft in my ear. A lover’s illusion.

But when Mirella appeared—white-clad, radiant, her wolf aura brushing against every soul in the hall—everything changed.

She stumbled out in tears after a single exchange.

Kaiden’s hand left me at once.

“Kaiden—” I barely started.

He was already gone.

I stood there as murmurs spread, as pity and judgment turned in slow circles around me like vultures sensing weakness.

Someone’s ladle overturned. Scalding broth spilled across my sleeve as I was brushed aside in the rush. Heat bit into my skin, but no one stopped.

Not even him.

**

I returned home alone, the scent of smoke and herbs clinging to my burned arm.

The study door—always locked to me—stood slightly open.

Inside, I saw it.

A framed stone engraving resting on his desk.

Kaiden and Mirella beneath the Moonstone, their marks aligned, their wolves intertwined in the old way—before me, before everything.

The air left my lungs.

I closed the door behind me and took out the bone-carved communication charm.

My brother’s voice reached me across distance and pack borders.

“Elyria Whitestone,” he said immediately, sharp with concern, “have you been wronged?”

I swallowed it down. All of it.

“No,” I answered lightly. Too lightly. “I’ve decided. I’ll accept the arranged union.”

A pause.

Then his voice softened. “Did something happen?”

I forced a smile even though he couldn’t see it. “It doesn’t matter who I marry. I’m going to marry anyway.”

Silence stretched.

Then a sigh. Relief, but uncertain.

“I’m glad you’ve decided. Come home soon. Do you want to meet your betrothed first?”

“No need,” I said. “Set the date. One month.”

“As you wish.”

Before he ended the link, he added casually, “Kaiden Fenwick’s fated mate has returned. If you still speak with him, you should invite him to the wedding. It might bring blessing.”

My fingers tightened.

So even my brother knew.

“Don’t bother him,” I said quietly. “I’m not close to him.”

The connection dimmed.

**

The door creaked open behind me.

Kaiden had returned.

His presence filled the room like it always had—familiar, warm, wrong.

“Not close to whom?” he asked, amused.

“Not close to you,” I replied without looking back.

A pause.

Then he laughed softly and came closer, arms sliding around me like nothing in the world had shifted.

“Not close?” he murmured near my ear. “Then tell me, Elyria… what do you call all those nights under the silver moon? Were those nothing to you?”

His breath warmed my skin.

Once, it would have made my heart race.

Now it felt like chains tightening.

I shifted away.

That was when I saw it.

A faint mark on his collar—deep crimson, like a kiss pressed too deliberately into fabric.

Not mine.

The ache in my burned arm flared suddenly, sharp enough to steal my breath.

Kaiden noticed at once.

His grip loosened.

“Elyria,” his voice turned urgent, “what happened to your arm?”

He caught my wrist, rolling back my sleeve.

The burn marks stood out against my skin.

His expression changed—concern, shock, confusion.

“When did this happen?” he demanded. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

For a moment, he looked almost like the Kaiden I once trusted.

Almost.

But I remembered the banquet.

I remembered the door I was not allowed to open.

I remembered how easily he let go of me.

So I said nothing.

Because I wasn’t sure anymore—

if telling him the truth would break his mask…

or finally break me.
