Chapter 1 of The Soccer Star's Forgotten Wife

I found out my husband was having dinner with his first love while I was scrubbing tomato sauce off our kitchen counter.

It wasn’t dramatic at first.

No broken glass. No screaming. No music swelling in the background like a bad movie.

Just me, standing barefoot on the cold marble floor, wearing one of Adrian’s old gray T-shirts, with my hair tied up in a messy knot and dish soap drying on my wrists.

My phone buzzed beside the sink.

I almost ignored it.

Dinner was still on the stove. Ryan’s soccer uniform was tumbling in the dryer. Adrian’s mother had called twice that afternoon to remind me about her doctor’s appointment, as if I hadn’t already arranged the car, confirmed the time, and emailed the clinic her insurance information.

But then the screen lit up again.

A sports news notification.

Adrian Hale spotted at private dinner with actress Olivia Hart. Old flames reunited?

For a second, I just stared at the headline.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was ridiculous.

Adrian Hale was my husband. The most famous soccer player in New York. Captain of the national team. A man whose face was on billboards, sports drinks, luxury watches, and half the jerseys worn by teenage boys in America.

He was also the man who barely remembered to text me when his flight landed.

The idea that I had to learn about my husband’s dinner plans from the same gossip accounts as his fans was pathetic, but it wasn’t new.

That was how our marriage worked.

The world got Adrian Hale the superstar.

I got Adrian Hale’s dirty laundry, unread messages, and carefully controlled silence across the dinner table.

Still, I clicked the link.

Not because I believed the headline.

I clicked because I was used to fixing things before they became problems.

If the press was twisting a casual business dinner into a scandal, I needed to know how bad it looked. I needed to message his real agent, prepare a statement, maybe call the sponsor who hated romantic gossip attached to family-brand athletes.

Half agent.

Half wife.

Fully unpaid.

The livestream opened.

At first, I thought it was a paparazzi video.

Then I saw the username.

Olivia Hart Official.

My thumb froze against the screen.

It wasn’t a leaked clip.

It was her livestream.

The camera was angled beautifully, of course. Soft golden lighting, white tablecloth, crystal glasses, candles glowing like they had been placed by a production team. Olivia sat across from my husband in a black satin dress, her long brown hair falling over one shoulder.

And Adrian—

Adrian was smiling.

Not his press smile. Not the cold, professional smile he gave reporters after a game.

A real smile.

The kind I used to wait for in the first year of our marriage, back when I still thought patience could soften a man.

Olivia laughed at something he said.

Adrian reached for the serving plate and placed a piece of steak onto her dish.

“Eat more,” he said, his voice low and gentle. “You barely touched lunch.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

I had cooked for that man for seven years.

Seven years of balanced meals before training, protein shakes after games, low-sodium dinners before flights, comfort food after losses. I knew exactly how he liked his eggs, how much lemon he wanted in his water, what soup helped when his knee ached in winter.

He had never once told me to eat more.

Olivia lifted her wineglass and smiled at the camera.

“Everyone keeps asking why I’m in New York,” she said, pretending to be embarrassed. “I’m just having dinner with an old friend. You guys are overthinking it.”

Adrian picked up the wine bottle and refilled her glass before she even asked.

Old friend.

I knew Olivia Hart.

Everyone did now.

She was the new rising actress every entertainment account kept pushing. Beautiful, delicate, talented, hardworking. The kind of woman fans called elegant even when she was just breathing.

A few weeks ago, I had watched her new drama while folding Ryan’s clothes.

I had even said to Adrian, “She kind of looks like me, don’t you think?”

He had been checking game footage on his tablet.

Usually, he ignored questions like that. Adrian had a talent for making me feel like I was speaking to a locked door.

But that day, he looked up.

His eyes moved over my face in a way that made me wish I hadn’t asked.

“Not really,” he said.

I smiled awkwardly. “No?”

“She works in front of cameras for a living, Claire. Don’t compare yourself to an actress.”

That was all.

No cruelty in his voice.

That was the worst part.

He didn’t even think he was insulting me.

Now I watched him lean toward Olivia, listening carefully while she talked about a film role. He looked interested. Present. Alive.

With me, Adrian was tired.

With me, he was silent.

With her, he was a man I had never been allowed to know.

The comments on the livestream flew by.

They look so good together.

Is this his first love?

Wait, isn’t he married?

His wife is so quiet though. Olivia matches his energy better.

I turned the volume down, but not before Olivia’s laugh filled my kitchen.

Behind me, the pasta water boiled over.

I jumped, nearly dropping my phone, and rushed to turn off the stove. Steam rose into my face. The sauce had splattered across the burner, red and messy, like something bleeding.

“Mom?”

Ryan’s voice came from the stairs.

I quickly wiped my hands on a towel and turned around.

My son stood there in his school hoodie, hair messy from his nap, one hand rubbing his eye. He was six, almost seven, with Adrian’s dark hair and my stubborn chin.

“What are you doing?” he asked. “I’m hungry.”

“I’m making dinner, sweetheart. It’ll be ready in a few minutes.”

He came closer, then stopped beside me.

His eyes landed on my phone.

The livestream was still playing.

His face lit up.

“Olivia!”

My heart dropped so fast I felt dizzy.

Ryan leaned over the counter, excited. “She’s in New York?”

I looked at him slowly. “You know her?”

“Of course.” He sounded confused that I would even ask. “Dad took me to dinner with Olivia last month.”

The kitchen seemed to tilt.

“Last month?” I repeated.

“Yeah. She was super nice.” Ryan smiled at the screen. “She smelled really good too. Like expensive flowers.”

I couldn’t move.

Last month.

I knew exactly what day it was.

Our wedding anniversary.

The anniversary Adrian had forgotten for the third year in a row.

No, not forgotten.

I had asked him that morning, quietly, while buttoning his shirt because he was running late.

“Will you be home for dinner tonight?”

He had glanced down at me, expression unreadable.

“I have work.”

“On our anniversary?”

His eyes had moved over my clothes, my bare face, the faint flour on my sleeve from the cake I had baked before sunrise.

“Claire, don’t start.”

I hadn’t started.

I had swallowed the hurt, smiled, packed his lunch, and told myself he was busy.

That night, I ate the anniversary cake alone after Ryan fell asleep.

Apparently, my husband had been busy having dinner with his first love and our son.

Ryan wrinkled his nose suddenly.

“Mom, why do you smell like oil?”

I blinked. “What?”

“You smell like cooking oil.” He stepped back a little. “Olivia never smells like that. Maybe you should take a shower before we eat.”

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

He didn’t say it with hatred.

That almost made it worse.

He said it like a fact.

Like he had learned it from somewhere.

Like women were ranked by fragrance, softness, beauty, and usefulness.

Like his mother belonged at the bottom.

I looked down at my hands. They were red from hot water. My nails were short because long nails made it harder to clean, cook, pack lunches, wash uniforms, and manage a household that nobody thanked me for maintaining.

“Ryan,” I said quietly, “who told you that?”

He shrugged. “Nobody.”

“Did your dad say something?”

“No.” He looked annoyed. “Why are you asking so many questions?”

“Because I didn’t know you had dinner with Olivia.”

He rolled his eyes, a small, sharp gesture that looked too much like Adrian. “It wasn’t a big deal. Dad said you were busy at home.”

Busy at home.

I almost laughed again.

Busy being erased.

Ryan talked endlessly about Olivia.

"She knows a lot about soccer."

"She bought me ice cream."

"Dad laughed a lot when we were with her."

Every sentence felt like another small cut.

By the time cooking was over, my appetite had completely disappeared.

I was loading the last plate into the dishwasher when the front door opened.

My whole body went still.

Ryan turned immediately. “Dad!”

Adrian walked in wearing a black coat and the kind of calm expression that made photographers chase him through airports. Tall, broad-shouldered, impossibly handsome in the way that had once made me feel lucky and now made me feel foolish.

He looked from Ryan to me, then to the phone on the counter.

The livestream had ended.

But the damage had not.

Ryan ran to him. “Dad, Olivia’s in New York! Can we see her again?”

Adrian’s hand rested briefly on Ryan’s head.

“Maybe,” he said.

Just maybe.

So easy.

So natural.

I stared at him. “You took Ryan to dinner with Olivia?”

Adrian looked at me like I had asked why the sky was blue.

“Yes.”

“On our anniversary?”

A flicker crossed his face, but it disappeared quickly.

“It was a work dinner.”

“A work dinner with your first love and our son?”

His jaw tightened. “Don’t call her that.”

I laughed under my breath. “That’s what bothers you? Not the fact that I found out from our child?”

Ryan looked between us, frowning. “Mom, why are you mad?”

“I’m not mad at you.”

“You sound mad.”

Adrian removed his coat and handed it to me out of habit.

I stared at it.

For seven years, I had taken his coat without thinking.

This time, I didn’t move.

His hand paused in the air.

“Claire,” he said, voice low with warning.

That tone used to work on me.

It used to make me quiet.

Tonight, something inside me was too tired to obey.

“Hang it up yourself,” I said.

Ryan’s eyes widened.

Adrian’s face hardened. “Not in front of him.”

“Right,” I said. “Because the problem is me speaking, not you humiliating me in public.”

“It was dinner.”

“It was a livestream.”

“I didn’t know she was live.”

“Did you know you were smiling at her like that?”

Silence.

That silence answered more than any confession could.

Ryan tugged on Adrian’s sleeve. “Dad, I’m hungry.”

Adrian glanced toward the stove. “Is dinner ready?”

I looked at him.

Really looked at him.

This man had walked into a house I kept warm, clean, organized, and peaceful. He had ignored the woman who made his life possible. He had taken our son to meet another woman on our anniversary. And now he was asking whether dinner was ready.

Something cracked.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

But completely.

“No,” I said.

Adrian frowned. “What?”

“Dinner isn’t ready.”

Ryan groaned. “Mom!”

I wiped my hands slowly on the towel.

“There’s pasta. There’s sauce. You both know where the plates are.”

Adrian stared at me as if I had spoken another language.

“Claire, what is this?”

I picked up my phone.

My hand was shaking, but my voice was not.

“This is me realizing I have been treating this house like a home while everyone else has been treating me like staff.”

Ryan’s lower lip pushed out. “That’s not fair.”

“No,” I said softly, looking at my son. “It isn’t.”

Adrian stepped closer. “You’re overreacting.”

There it was.

The sentence men used when they wanted women to doubt their own pain.

I smiled.

It felt strange on my face.

“Maybe.”

His expression eased a little, like he thought he had won.

Then I said, “Or maybe I’m finally reacting exactly enough.”

I walked past him.

For the first time in years, I did not ask if his knee hurt.

I did not remind him about tomorrow’s sponsor meeting.

I did not tell Ryan to wash his hands.

I went upstairs, closed the bedroom door, and leaned against it.

Downstairs, I heard my son complaining.

I heard Adrian opening cabinets with the helpless irritation of a man who had never needed to know where anything was.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

Mrs. Hale, this is Daniel Reed, the journalist from Sports Weekly. I know tonight must be difficult. If you ever want to tell your side of the story, call me.

I stared at the message for a long time.

Then I looked at the woman in the mirror.

Messy hair.

Tired eyes.

Oil on her shirt.

A wife.

A mother.

A woman no one in this house had bothered to see.

I typed back only three words.

I might soon.
