~SARIA'S POV~

"The smelly girl."

"Cursed."

The whispers slide through the corridor before I even see the mouths they come from.

I keep walking.

Stopping would only feed them.

Cold air slips through the open windows and brushes the side of my neck beneath my cloak. The stone floor is hard under my boots.

On either side of me, the Alpha's guards walk in silence, as if I am something that must be carried carefully or kept under watch.

Wolves step aside before I reach them.

They never used to treat me like that.

Not when my parents were alive.

Back then, people said my name. They smiled. They remembered what my family had done for this pack.

Now they look through me.

I hold my cloak tighter and keep my eyes forward.

Tonight is the bonding ceremony.

And whether they like it or not, they will see me standing beside Alpha Darian as his Luna.

My fingers brush the mate mark on my neck. It pulses under my skin, not with pain, but with a strange alertness, like something inside me is awake and listening.

I swallow.

The first time it appeared, I was sixteen years old. A silver crescent bloomed on my neck, and at the same moment, a gray-silver mark appeared on Darian's chest before the whole pack.

For one stunned night, I thought the Moon had chosen my future.

Then a sharp memory hits me without warning.

Red-masked figures.

Screaming.

Something crashing behind me.

My mother's hand clamped around mine so hard it hurt.

Blood in the air. Hot. Thick. Impossible to forget.

"Run, Saria. Run."

The image breaks.

I blink, and the corridor is back. Stone walls. Torchlight. The guards. My own uneven breathing.

The memory never stays long enough to make sense. It comes in pieces, leaving behind only fear and the feeling that something precious was taken from me before I could understand it.

After my family died, everything changed.

My scent.

My shifting.

The way my mark burns when it should not.

The guards stop at the gate, and warm light spills across the courtyard from the Alpha Hall.

I step through.

It looks like the kind of night meant for happiness.

Drums beat in time with my heartbeat. Torches line the stone walls, steady against the wind. Warriors stand in neat rows around the courtyard. The council waits near the altar with folded hands and unreadable faces. Families gather around the edges, all of them turned toward the center.

This is the pack my parents sacrificed everything to protect.

The pack that promised I would never stand alone after they were gone.

But nobody smiles at me now.

An old family friend looks away.

Funny how promises change with time.

Especially when most of them have already decided I no longer matter.

I lift my chin.

The full moon hangs above us, bright and silent.

Then I see him.

Darian stands beside the moon altar with the elders. Tall. Still. His dark hair falls over his brow. The moment his eyes meet mine, the noise around me fades.

My wolf rises inside me at once.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Warmth spreads through my chest like it has been waiting years for this moment. The invisible thread between us pulls tight, clearer than ever.

He feels it too.

His shoulders stiffen, but his eyes soften for just a heartbeat.

It is enough to make my chest ache.

There.

That is what I came for.

The future I survived for.

The man my mother once saved when he was a child.

I can still see it if I close my eyes. My mother returning late that night, holding him in her arms after she was stabbed protecting him. The whole pack had celebrated. Everyone called her a hero.

"Hero," I whisper to myself.

I take another step toward him, and the warmth between us deepens.

Then it vanishes.

His face hardens behind the Alpha mask.

My mark pulses once.

Unease stirs in my wolf.

Why does he look at me like that?

I do not ask her. I keep walking because there is nowhere else to go.

When I reach the altar, he does not take my hand.

He does not smile.

I tell myself it is because everyone is watching.

Darian has never let me fall before.

So I stand beside him anyway.

High Elder Nykaros steps forward and lifts his staff. The ceremonial fire brightens, and the carved symbols around the altar glow beneath the moonlight.

"Tonight," he says, "we resolve the fate of this bond before the Moon."

The pack lowers their heads.

My wolf shifts restlessly.

I look at Darian.

He looks back.

The bond feels sharper up close. Strained. Almost painful. I can feel his wolf beneath his skin. Mine reaches for it automatically.

Then his jaw tightens.

His gaze drops to my mark.

Pressure gathers under my skin at once. He presses a hand to his chest, and for a second, strain flashes across his face before he hides it.

I see it.

This has happened before. Every time he looks at my mark, something in him reacts.

Not affection.

Not peace.

Resistance.

Something he refuses to name.

The last time I asked him about it, he ended training early and avoided me for three days.

Tonight, he will not walk away from me again.

"Are you all right?" I ask quietly.

He does not answer.

Instead, he straightens and becomes the Alpha again.

The elders lift their hands and begin the invocation chant. Their voices rise together as the ceremonial fire burns brighter.

But the space between Darian and me feels wrong now.

Thin.

Stretched too tight.

Like the bond is no longer resting between us but pulling itself apart.

My wolf shifts uneasily. The mark throbs with every beat of my heart.

Then a faint scent slips from my skin before I can stop it.

Wrong.

Unstable.

The reaction around us is immediate.

One woman recoils.

A warrior covers his nose.

Someone pulls a child back into the crowd.

Darian sees all of it.

His fingers tighten at his side.

High Elder Nykaros raises one hand. "Step forward," he says to Darian. "And claim your Luna."

Darian steps closer.

Close enough that I feel the heat of his body.

Close enough that my wolf rises hopefully despite everything.

Close enough that I expect him to take my hand and finish the bond in front of the whole pack.

For one dangerous heartbeat, I think he might.

His hand lifts.

Not enough to touch me. Just enough for me to see it.

His fingers flex once, like he almost reaches for me, then stop.

His eyes return to my mark.

The ceremonial fire flares high.

Heat blooms at my neck, sudden and alive.

Darian stares at me.

For one suspended second, the crowd disappears.

The fire disappears.

The world narrows to his eyes locked on mine.

His throat moves.

When he speaks, his voice is rough.

"I..."

The sound breaks something in me before the words even come.

Behind me, someone whispers, "Something is wrong with her."

The murmur spreads fast through the courtyard.

Darian's expression cracks for one brief second. I see it in the movement of his hand, the way it almost reaches toward me before falling again.

Then he shakes his head.

Small.

Final.

My body reacts before my mind catches up.

His wolf pulls away from mine.

Not toward me.

Away.

Grief crashes through my chest so suddenly that my breath catches.

His eyes darken as they stay on mine.

And then I understand.

He is not hesitating.

Before he speaks again, I already know what is coming.

His next breath comes out heavy, like it costs him something.

Then he turns slightly toward the council before looking back at me.

"Before the Moon and this pack," he says, "I reject you, Saria, as my fated mate."

For one heartbeat, my mind refuses to understand.

My wolf makes one broken sound inside me.

Then the bond begins to break.

And something in it feels wrong.
