Chapter 1 of The Price of His Contract

The silk sheets cost more than three months of her father's life insurance, and they were cold.

Eleanor Baldwin didn't rush to open her eyes. She lay in the center of the emperor-sized bed, taking inventory of her body: the dull, bruised ache in her hips, the phantom weight of heavy hands on her ribs, and the scent of expensive bourbon and cedar clinging to her throat.

A fair price. The entry fee was paid.

She pushed herself upright, the heavy charcoal silk pooling around her waist. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass, dawn was bleeding across Manhattan, turning the Vanderbilt Tower into an obsidian monolith against the bruised sky.

Years ago, at her parents' rain-soaked funeral, Anthony Sterling had laid a heavy, sympathetic hand on her sixteen-year-old shoulder. “We'll take care of everything, sweet girl,” he had whispered, his breath smelling of the very scotch her father had stocked in his private cellar. Within forty-eight hours, Anthony had forged her father's signature, liquidated the Baldwin family trust, and moved Eleanor into the servants' annex behind the garage. And Craig—his son, the boy who used to carve her initials into oak trees—had simply watched her carry her own cardboard boxes through the rain, wearing the gold watch her father had given him.

They thought they had buried her. They didn't know that some seeds only sprout in the dark.

The heavy latch of the marble bathroom clicked open.

Sebastian Vanderbilt emerged through the steam. A black silk robe hung loose from his wide shoulders, untied at the throat, revealing the hard, razor-cut lines of his collarbone. His dark hair was still damp, dripping a single, slow bead of water down the sharp angle of his jaw.

He didn't look at her. To Sebastian, she was already background noise.

He walked to the brushed-steel minibar, grabbed a crystal tumbler, and let the ice rattle against the glass before drinking it dry. The slow, rhythmic flex of his throat was the only sound in the penthouse.

"Mr. Vanderbilt," Eleanor's voice broke the silence. It wasn't the tentative whisper of a woman in a billionaire's bed. It was clean. Sharp. Utterly steady. "I believe we have business to conclude."

Sebastian paused, the empty tumbler still in his hand. He slowly turned his head.

His eyes were a chilling, slate blue—not the gaze of a man looking at a lover, but of an auctioneer assessing a piece of damaged porcelain.

"Business?" A faint, mocking breath left his nose. "You mean the invoice."

He set the glass down with a sharp clink, reached into the pocket of his robe, and flicked a matte-black business card through the air.

It tumbled across the sheets, coming to rest against Eleanor's bare knee.

"Call Foster Deron at nine," Sebastian said, his tone dripping with dismissive boredom. "Give him an account number. Whatever number you had in mind, add twenty percent for your discretion."

Eleanor didn't touch the card. She didn't even look at it.

"I don't want your cash, Mr. Vanderbilt."

Sebastian's brow arched a millimeter. The boredom in his eyes shifted, sharpening into something colder, more analytical. "No? A girl who maneuvers herself into my hotel room on charity gala night usually has a very specific debt to pay off."

"I have debts to collect," Eleanor corrected quietly, her dark eyes holding his without flinching. "I want a desk outside your office. Full administrative clearance. And direct access to the Vanderbilt distress portfolio—specifically, the short-term loans keeping Anthony Sterling afloat."

The air in the room instantly thinned.

Sebastian didn't move, but the predatory stillness that settled over him made the hairs on Eleanor's arms stand up.

"Anthony Sterling," he murmured, his voice dropping into a dangerous, velvet purr. He closed the distance between them, his long, unhurried strides eating up the space until his shadow swallowed her whole. He leaned down, placing one large hand on the mattress beside her hip, trapping her in his scent of cold snow and cedar. "The man who bled your family dry. And you think you can use my firm as your personal guillotine?"

"You hold four hundred million of their bad debt," Eleanor whispered, leaning into his space rather than shrinking back, her breath brushing his jawline. "Anthony has hidden six offshore accounts in the Cayman trust to avoid your collateral seizure. You want your money back. I want them in the dirt. Give me the terminal, and I will hand you the rope to hang them."

Sebastian stared at her. For the first time since she had walked up to him at the gala twelve hours ago, his ice-blue eyes flickered with something raw—an appetite that had nothing to do with lust.

"A gold digger with blood on her mind," he rasped, his knuckles brushing lightly against the hollow of her throat. His touch was electric, burning cold against her skin. "Dangerous. And expensive."

He straightened up, breaking the contact, and tapped the wall intercom once. "Deron. Bring the standard collar."

The suite door clicked open in less than three seconds. Foster Deron stepped in, wearing a bespoke three-piece suit, carrying a thick leather-bound folder and a heavy silver fountain pen. He had clearly been waiting in the hallway like an executioner on standby.

"Ms. Baldwin," Deron murmured, placing the heavy file across her lap.

Eleanor opened it. The bold black letters on the cover read: EXECUTIVE NON-DISCLOSURE & MASTER SERVICE AGREEMENT.

She didn't need to read every line to understand the trap. It put her under his absolute authority 24/7. Her schedule, her public appearances, her private life—all subordinated to the Vanderbilt Group. Attached to the back was an eight-figure deferred signing bonus, locked behind a corporate vault that required his sole signature to release.

It wasn't an employment contract. It was a golden chain.

"Sign it," Sebastian's voice came from the armchair by the window, where he had settled, his legs crossed with absolute, aristocratic ease. "Sign it, and my door opens. Walk away, and I will ensure every firm in North America treats your name like toxic waste."

Deron uncapped the pen and offered the cold metal to her fingers.

Eleanor didn't ask for a lawyer. She didn't hesitate for a single heartbeat.

She took the pen, flipped straight to the final page, and signed her name with a sharp, slashing stroke: Eleanor Baldwin.

She handed the pen back to Deron, lifted her chin, and met Sebastian's gaze through the dim morning light.

"When do I start, boss?"

A slow, ruthless smile curved Sebastian's lips. It was the smile of a wolf watching a lamb voluntarily lock itself inside the cage.

"Deron will show you your desk," he said softly. "Welcome to hell, Eleanor."

Ten minutes later, Eleanor stood under the roaring spray of the marble shower, turning the dial all the way to ice.

The freezing water hit her chest, washing away the scent of his cologne, the heat of his skin, and the phantom bruises on her hips. In the steam-fogged mirror across from the glass, her gaze dropped to the pale, jagged line running beneath her right collarbone—an old, ugly scar from a locked equipment room in high school, a reminder of what happened when you were weak.

She wiped the condensation from the glass with a wet palm.

Anthony Sterling thought she was dead. Craig thought she was a discarded toy.

She stepped out of the water, wrapped herself in the tailored armor of a fresh grey suit, and pulled her wet hair back into a severe, lethal knot.
