Chapter 1 of The Night I Watched My Husband Choose Her

"One ticket, ma'am?" the usher asked, reaching for the gold-stamped passes in my hand.

"Two," I said. "I'm waiting for my husband."

He glanced at the clock above the concession stand. "The Odyssey starts in two minutes. You may want to take your seats."

My phone vibrated before I could answer. A message from Daniel lit the screen.

Flight delayed at O'Hare. Blizzard. I'm sorry, Claire. Refund the tickets and I'll make it up to you tomorrow.

For a moment, I stared at the words. Tonight was our tenth anniversary, and those two premiere tickets had taken nearly a year of favors to secure. Daniel knew that. He had watched me mark the date on our kitchen calendar in red.

I typed, It's fine.

Then I handed the usher one ticket. "Change of plans. Just me."

"Shame to waste the other seat," he said as he scanned the barcode. "People have been trying to buy their way into this screening for months."

"I know."

The bass from the theater trembled through the carpeted hallway. I followed the low aisle lights to Row M, close enough to feel the screen and far enough back to take in its full width. The empty seat beside mine looked accusingly bright in the dark.

I set my purse on it.

A man in the row ahead leaned toward the woman beside him. "Told you these were the best seats in the house."

My hand stopped on the zipper of my bag.

That voice belonged in my kitchen, in our bed, in every voicemail I had saved from the first year of our marriage.

I leaned forward as the final trailer washed the audience in blue light.

Daniel.

The shape of his shoulders. The slight wave at the back of his dark hair. The expensive watch I had given him when Davis Innovations closed its first major deal.

He was not stranded in Chicago. He was three feet away.

The young woman next to him snuggled deeper into a beige trench coat. "I'm glad I grabbed this from your car. It's freezing outside."

The tartan lining flashed when she adjusted the collar.

My Burberry coat. I had left it in Daniel's Range Rover on Tuesday.

"It looks better on you, Sophie," he murmured, kissing her temple.

Sophie Lane, his twenty-three-year-old executive assistant, smiled and touched the gray cashmere scarf around her neck. "And this? Did you buy it for me?"

I had knitted that scarf three winters ago after Daniel complained that every store-bought one irritated his skin. I had started over four times to get the ribbing right.

"Keep it," he said. "It's just an old thing."

Something inside me went still.

I did not stand. I did not throw my drink. I did not give him the scene he would later call hysteria. I sat in the dark while my husband dressed his mistress in pieces of my life.

The screen faded to black. The opening score rose through the theater, and a storm-tossed Ithaca filled the IMAX screen. Penelope waited on a cliff for a husband who had been gone too long.

Sophie rested her head on Daniel's shoulder. "Ten years," she whispered. "Would anyone really wait that long?"

"It's a myth," Daniel said.

"Would Claire?"

His answer came without hesitation.

"Claire will never leave me."

The certainty in his voice hurt more than the kiss.

Onscreen, lightning split the sea. White light flashed across the audience, revealing Daniel's hand sliding over Sophie's. He threaded their fingers together and left them on the armrest in plain view, his wedding ring bright against her skin.

I took out my phone.

I disabled the flash, steadied my elbows on my knees, and waited for the next burst of cinematic lightning. When it came, I pressed the shutter.

The photograph was perfect. Daniel's profile. Sophie's scarf. Their joined hands. His wedding band. The timestamp in the corner.

I uploaded it to a private cloud folder and sent a copy to an email account Daniel did not know existed.

For the next hour, I watched more than the film. He fed her popcorn. She traced circles on his wrist. He whispered into her hair. Once, she lifted my scarf to cover her smile.

Every gesture became evidence, but the strangest part was how quickly my grief hardened into arithmetic. Ten years. Two houses. Three joint accounts. One life insurance policy worth ten million dollars. A company I had helped build but no longer controlled.

With ten minutes left in the movie, I stood and slipped through the rear exit.

Snow drove sideways across Broadway. Taxis crawled through the storm, their taillights bleeding red over the wet pavement. I stepped beneath the theater awning and called my financial adviser.

Greg Mercer answered on the fourth ring. "Claire? It's after eleven."

"Open my estate file."

Sheets rustled on his end. "Is something wrong?"

"Remove Daniel as beneficiary of my life insurance policy. Replace him with the Hart Foundation and send me the electronic forms tonight."

His silence sharpened. "That's a ten-million-dollar policy. The insurer may need a processing period."

"Then start it now."

"What about the joint brokerage accounts?"

"Do not touch them yet. I don't want alerts reaching his phone before I have counsel."

"Claire, are you in danger?"

I looked back at the glowing theater doors. "Not anymore."

Greg promised to send the forms within fifteen minutes.

My next call went to Marcus Reed, a corporate litigator I had known since business school. Jazz thudded in the background when he answered.

"You never call after ten unless someone is about to be sued," he said.

"Someone is. I need the most aggressive matrimonial attorney in Manhattan. Tonight."

The music faded as he moved somewhere quieter. "You and Daniel?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

A black town car pulled to the curb. I opened the rear door and slid inside.

"He made a bad investment," I said. "Me."

Marcus exhaled slowly. "I'll call Evelyn Croft. She handles high-asset divorces and does not scare easily."

"Good."

"Claire, once this starts, Davis Innovations could become collateral damage."

I watched snow swallow the theater marquee as the car pulled away.

"Then Daniel should have protected it better."

My phone chimed. Greg's email had arrived with the beneficiary change documents attached.

I signed them before we reached the next block.
