Chapter 1 of The Hundred-Dollar Wife Owns His Empire

My mother needed fifty thousand dollars by sunrise or the surgery was off.

I knelt on our kitchen floor the night before our wedding and begged Julian for help.

He paid it, kissed my forehead, and called me his lucky charm.

Then he learned my name unlocked nothing, and the kisses stopped.

After that, every cry for help got the same answer: one hundred dollars, wired without a word.

A car slammed into me on Halsted Street and I texted him from the gurney; one hundred dollars.

I buried my mother alone in the rain; he was at Bianca's gallery, and he sent one hundred dollars.

Seven months pregnant, I left seventy-seven voice notes telling him our baby kicked for the first time.

He never opened a single one, but the hundred dollars landed at 9:02 p.m.

What Julian forgot to ask, in three whole years, was whose daughter I actually am.

The quiet doctor who keeps stitching me back together already knows.

He calls me Ms. Vance, and he answers to my dead father.

Tonight Julian is toasting Bianca under chandeliers while his last loan comes due.

He just doesn't know the name on the note that can bury him is mine.

My knees pressed hard against the freezing kitchen tile. I slid my glowing phone across the floor until it bumped against Julian's leather shoe.

"Fifty thousand," I said, keeping my voice steady despite the tremor in my fingertips. "Before dawn, or they cancel my mother's surgery."

Julian Ashford did not look down right away. He adjusted his silk tie, his reflection caught in the dark oven glass. Tomorrow was our third wedding anniversary. Today, I was begging him for my mother's life.

"Is that the final notice?" he asked, his tone mild.

"Yes." I kept my eyes on the hem of his tailored trousers. "The hospital needs the deposit cleared by four in the morning. They will take her off the schedule if it doesn't hit their account."

He sighed and pulled out his phone. His thumb moved across the screen. A second later, my device pinged on the floor.

"Done," Julian said.

I pulled my phone back. The alert showed a fifty-thousand-dollar bank transfer scheduled by standard processing.

Estimated availability: three business days.

"This won't clear by four," I said. "The hospital needs available funds, not a pending transfer."

Julian glanced at the screen and shrugged. "Then ask them to hold the slot."

"They already refused. They said an immediate five-thousand-dollar payment is the only way to hold it until the wire clears."

Julian crouched down. He brushed a stray strand of hair behind my ear, his fingers lingering on my cheek. He leaned in and pressed his lips to my forehead.

"You always stress over nothing," he murmured. "You are my lucky charm, Cordelia. Have I ever let you down?"

"Thank you, Julian."

He stood back up, checking his luxury watch. "I have a final meeting with the venue coordinator. The floral arrangements are wrong. Go get some sleep. You need to look perfect tomorrow."

He turned toward the hallway.

"Julian, wait," I said.

He stopped but did not turn around. "What now?"

"Five thousand tonight," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "That is all it takes to keep her on the surgical schedule."

"How much?" he asked to the wall.

"Five thousand."

Julian let out a short, irritated scoff. He didn't bother turning to face me. He didn't even reach into his pocket again. He just tapped his smartwatch.

"Cover it first," he said.

"I don't have it," I replied, staring at his broad back. "I emptied my accounts covering the gala deposits."

"Just put it on a credit card. I'll sort it out after the gala."

My phone buzzed on the tile. The screen lit up with a new notification.

Julian Ashford sent you $100.

Message: For coffee. Don't stress.

I stared at the bright digits on the screen. One hundred dollars. A tip. A dismissal.

The front door opened and clicked shut. The lock engaged. I was alone in the massive kitchen of the penthouse he bought last year.

I neither screamed nor threw the phone. I accepted the hundred dollars, picked myself up, and rubbed the ache from my knees.

In the master suite, I passed the walk-in closet where the designer gown Julian had chosen for our anniversary dinner hung untouched. I went to the small antique vanity in the corner instead. It was the only piece of furniture I had brought when I moved in.

I pulled open the bottom drawer. Reaching all the way to the back, my fingers brushed against a small, faded velvet box.

I pulled it out and set it on the vanity. The hinges groaned slightly as I opened it.

It was empty.

Three years ago, this box held my late father's pocket watch. It was a heavy gold piece, engraved with his initials. When Julian lost his first major investor and faced a ruinous penalty for an overdue engineering project, he had paced our tiny apartment, tearing at his hair.

I took the watch to a private dealer the next morning. I sold it for eighteen thousand dollars. I handed Julian the cash in a brown envelope, telling him it was a loan from a distant relative. He used it to save his company.

He never asked about the relative again. He never asked where the watch went.

A year later, when Julian's company went public and the money started rolling in, I tracked down the dealer. The watch was long gone, sold to an anonymous collector overseas. But the dealer still had the box. I bought the empty velvet case back for fifty dollars.

I ran my thumb over the worn fabric inside the lid. Then, I flipped the box over.

On the bottom, pressed into the velvet with a ballpoint pen, was a string of twelve numbers. It looked like a serial code. It wasn't.

It was the routing number to an offshore account.

I traced the indented numbers, feeling the grooves against my skin. The account held every dime of the consulting fees I had secretly earned over the last two years, funneling my own engineering designs through a proxy firm. Julian thought I spent my days picking out linen napkins and attending charity luncheons. He had no idea I was the silent architect behind his rival's most successful bids.

I closed the velvet box. The snap echoed in the quiet bedroom.

I met my own gaze in the vanity mirror. My face was pale, my eyes dark and dry.

"Wait a little longer," I whispered to the glass. "It's not time yet."
