Chapter 1 of The Evicted Wife's Deportation Order

I sit in my cold USCIS office, staring at the eviction text from my seventeen-year-old son.

He tells me to pack my bags because our home now belongs to my husband and his mistress.

He says I am just a dramatic burden who doesn't deserve my husband's tenured success.

My chest tightens as I recall the three jobs I worked to fund my husband's PhD eighteen years ago.

I remember how, twelve years ago, I used my own federal quota to sponsor his "homeless" sweetheart's visa so she wouldn't be deported.

Now, my own flesh and blood has kicked me to the curb to make room for her.

I don't cry, and I don't argue with them.

Instead, I look down at the expedited naturalization file resting on my mahogany desk.

The applicant's name is Chloe Bennett, the very woman sleeping in my bed.

I slowly unscrew the cap of my red federal rejection pen.

It's time to show them exactly who holds the power in this country.

My phone vibrated against the polished mahogany of my desk.

The screen illuminated the dim, temperature-controlled office, displaying a new text message from my seventeen-year-old son, Leo.

"Mom, come get your bags. This house belongs to Dad and Aunt Chloe now. You don't deserve Dad's tenured position."

I stared at the glowing letters. The cold leather of my high-level USCIS Senior Officer chair squeaked as I shifted my weight. I picked up the device and dialed his number.

He answered on the second ring. "I told you to just come get your stuff."

"Leo," I said, keeping my voice entirely flat. "Explain this text."

"Dad loves Chloe," my son replied, his tone laced with teenage arrogance. "She actually fits into his academic world. She helps him with his research. You just stamp passports or whatever."

"I worked three minimum-wage jobs to fund his PhD," I reminded him. "I scrubbed diner floors until my knuckles bled. I gave birth to you in a damp basement apartment because we couldn't afford a hospital room."

"That was forever ago," Leo scoffed. "Stop guilt-tripping us. Just don't make a scene when you pick up your trash. The neighbors are already watching."

The line went dead.

A single tear escaped, tracing a freezing path down my cheek. I caught it with the back of my hand, wiping the moisture away before it could drop onto my uniform lapel. It would be the only tear I shed for them.

I dialed Mark next.

"Eleanor," my husband answered. Background noise filtered through the speaker—clinking glassware, soft jazz, and a woman's familiar laugh. Chloe's laugh.

"You had our son send an eviction text?" I asked.

"He volunteered," Mark said smoothly. "Look, we wanted to handle this cleanly. Chloe and I are moving forward. You're holding me back."

"I paid the mortgage on that house for fifteen years."

"My name is on the deed," he countered. "I have the university lawyers on retainer. Don't fight this, Eleanor. You'll lose."

"You think I'll just walk away from my own home?"

"You have no choice. Chloe understands the pressures of my career. She knows how to host the dean, how to speak to the board. You work a tedious government job. We live in different worlds now."

"You used my wages to build your world."

"I survived your nagging," Mark corrected sharply. "Just let it go gracefully. I'll have the movers leave your boxes on the porch."

He hung up.

The heavy oak door to my office swung open. Agent Miller stepped inside, carrying a thick manila folder.

"Officer Vance," Miller said, dropping the file directly in the center of my desk. "The expedited naturalization interview preliminary review. The applicant's legal team is pushing hard for a same-day approval."

"Who has that kind of leverage to skip the queue?" I asked, pulling the folder toward me.

"A university professor," Miller replied. "He called the regional director twice this morning, claiming his fiancée needs immediate clearance for an international academic tour."

I flipped open the cover.

The name printed across the top line glared back at me in bold, black ink.

Chloe Bennett.

My fingers tightened around the edge of the paper. "Chloe Bennett," I repeated.

"Do you know her?" Miller asked, tilting his head.

"Pull up the federal database," I instructed, ignoring his question. "Search for work visa number US-8809."

Miller stepped around the desk and tapped the keyboard on my secondary monitor. "Searching. That's an old file. Twelve years old."

"Open the original draft."

"Got it," he said. His eyes scanned the digital document. "Sponsor signature... wait. Eleanor? Is this your maiden name?"

"It is."

"You sponsored her?"

"Twelve years ago," I said, my voice dropping. "I went behind my parents' backs. I forged the financial guarantees. I kept Chloe in this country when she had absolutely nothing and no one."

Miller stared at the screen, then down at the physical file. "And now she's applying for full citizenship. Through marriage?"

"She's trying to," I corrected.

They betrayed me. They threw me out of my own home, poisoned my son against me, and stole the life I built from scratch. But they completely forgot who held the sword in this city. Mark thought of me as a lowly clerk, entirely ignorant of the authority my rank carried.

"What do you want me to do with this preliminary review?" Miller asked, reaching for his green approval stamp.

"Leave it," I commanded.

"The regional director wants it processed by noon."

"The regional director does not have jurisdiction over a file with a flagged sponsor history," I stated. "The original draft of US-8809 contains a morality clause and a financial dependency waiver. If the sponsor revokes it before naturalization is finalized, the applicant faces immediate deportation proceedings."

Miller swallowed hard, stepping back from the desk. "You're going to revoke her original entry status?"

"I am going to conduct a thorough review of a potentially fraudulent application."

I opened my top drawer and retrieved my deep black fountain pen. The heavy metal bore the engraved federal seal. I clipped it meticulously to the breast pocket of my officer uniform, ensuring the silver emblem caught the overhead light.

"Should I notify the front desk to stall her legal team?" Miller pressed.

"No," I said. "Print the original archive copy of US-8809. The one with my handwritten addendums. Bring it to me immediately."

"Right away, ma'am."

Miller turned toward the printer station in the corner of the room.

Before he could take three steps, three sharp knocks rattled the frosted glass of my office door.

My junior assistant, Davis, pushed the door open, his face flushed with urgency.

"Officer Vance, a man named Mark Vance and a woman named Chloe are outside. They're trying to use internal connections to bypass the preliminary review process. They're in the outer lobby right now."

Kisses of Healing, Hearts in Turmoil is a completed werewolf romance on Literiess about Sophia Helvig, a Beta-born omega discarded by her fated mate Santiago Romano for a Luna chosen by his parents. The novel doesn't romanticize the bond — it interrogates it, turning "fated mate" into a mechanism of control rather than destiny. This review covers what the trope delivers, where it gets uncomfortable, and whether it's worth the unlock.
