Chapter 1 of The Broken Mate: The Lycan King's Forbidden Cure

Arden POV:

A searing pain ripped through me.

My last memory from my old world was a toxicology lab accident. My heart stopped, the lights went out, and my life ended.

I had not been reborn. My soul had crossed the void and transmigrated into another woman's body—into the body of Arden Sinclair.

Then another wave of memories crashed over me, not my own—the memories of the dead girl, Arden Sinclair, an Omega fated to the Alpha noble Caleb Knight. Memories of devotion, of love, and of utter betrayal. The final memory stopped at the moment Jocelyn Knight—Arden's older sister and Caleb's affair partner—forced a lethal overdose of the drug down her throat. The original Arden had died from the overdose, and I was wearing the body she had died in.

In my old life, I had been a trauma surgeon with additional training in toxicology. Now I was trapped in this broken werewolf body, in a world where modern technology existed beside wolf bloodlines, royal packs, and ancient laws.

The burning started in my veins, a liquid fire that turned my blood to lava. My limbs were lead, heavy and unresponsive. I tried to scream, but only a choked gasp escaped my lips.

My eyes fluttered open to a filthy ceiling, water-stained and webbed with shadows. The air was thick with the stench of stale beer and something acrid, like vomit.

This wasn't my room. It was a cramped storage room above a tavern, judging by the dirty floorboards, the stale beer, and the faint smell of spilled whiskey beneath the stronger stench of vomit.

The door creaked open.

A woman stood silhouetted against the hallway light. She glided in, her silk dress whispering against the grimy floorboards. Jocelyn Knight—my older sister, Caleb's new love, and the woman who had come to watch me die. She was here to confirm that the poison had taken hold, gloat over my helplessness, and make sure everything was ready before the Rogues arrived.

Her smile was a slash of victory in her perfect face.

"Still with us?" she cooed, her voice dripping with false sympathy. She knelt beside me, her expensive perfume a sickening sweet cloud.

"I must admit, I'm impressed. The Heat Bloom should have taken effect much faster. The dose was calculated for an ordinary Omega, not someone with your bloodline."

Heat Bloom. My surgeon's mind latched onto the name, filing it away. I couldn't identify every ingredient from the name alone, but my body gave me a clinical picture. The burning in my veins, the racing pulse, the progressive weakness, and the unnatural heat pointed to a compound rather than a simple sedative. A belladonna-like alkaloid could explain the autonomic overload. A second, hormone-like component could force an Omega into an accelerated heat cycle. The paralysis was probably the result of an overdose—or a separate ingredient designed to keep me helpless.

I tried to move, to fight, but my muscles refused to obey. A pathetic whimper was my only response.

Jocelyn's smile widened. She enjoyed this.

If the plan was to make me appear to have entered heat with the Rogues, they needed me alive long enough to be found. The dose was not meant to kill me immediately. It was meant to destroy my judgment, compromise my body, and leave behind a story everyone would accept.

From her pocket, she produced a small, silver object. It glinted in the dim light. Caleb's personal sigil, a snarling wolf's head. He never took it off.

She tossed it onto the dirty sheets beside my head. It landed with a soft clink.

"A little token," she explained, as if to a child. "Proof of your indiscretion. When they find you with the Rogues, this will seal your fate."

Rogues. So there was more.

"Caleb will perform the Rejection ceremony in five days. In front of everyone." Her eyes danced with cruel delight. "You'll be cast out. A wolfless, nameless nothing. Then the poison will finish its work. No one will even question it."

My gaze remained locked on hers. I couldn't speak, couldn't move, but I could listen. I memorized every word, every micro-expression. This was intelligence. This was ammunition.

She leaned closer, her voice a conspiratorial whisper. "You know, it was Caleb himself who provided the evidence against your father."

A jolt, more painful than the poison, shot through me. Lord Alistair Sinclair, my father. Accused of treason, his legs broken, rotting in a royal prison.

"He sealed the deal for his own Alpha position." Jocelyn continued, savoring the kill. "Your father's fall was his rise. And your death will be mine."

Jocelyn stood up, smoothing her dress. She had said her piece. She believed she had won.

"Goodbye, Arden," she said with a final, dismissive glance. "Try not to stain the sheets too much."

The door clicked shut, plunging the room back into near darkness.

Silence.

I felt pain for the dead Arden Sinclair. In that moment, I truly became her—not just empathy, but a desire for revenge, for her and for myself.

Heat Bloom—a forced Omega heat inducer built around a neurotoxic compound. Rapid onset. Descending paralysis. The burning suggested that the autonomic nerves were being attacked before the muscles shut down. I did not need to name every molecule. I needed to find the window between paralysis and death.

My mind raced, sifting through a mental library of toxicology. The burning was a specific neural pathway. The paralysis was systemic. If the second component had not completed its reaction, the poison had not finished its work. My bloodline had slowed the process. I had a small window—perhaps minutes, not hours.

I needed an energy source. Something powerful to disrupt the poison's molecular structure.

Then I heard it.

Rough laughter from the hallway. Heavy, clumsy footsteps approaching.

Jocelyn's after-party had arrived. The Rogues.

Seven separate sets of footsteps. The spacing was uneven, their gait heavy with alcohol, but they were closing fast. They had not come to look for a corpse. They had come to seize me and complete Jocelyn's trap while I was still alive.

A surge of pure, unadulterated will to survive flooded my system. I focused on my right hand, on a single fingertip. I scraped it against the rough wooden headboard.

A splinter. Pain. A flicker of control.

Using the agony as an anchor, I forced my body to obey. I rolled, a clumsy, dead-weight tumble, off the bed and into the deep shadows beneath it.

The door burst open with a violent crash.

Seven hulking men crowded the doorway, reeking of sweat and cheap liquor. One of them pointed into the room and barked, "That Omega is in here! Grab her!"
