Stripped at the Gala, Claimed by the Billionaire Investor

POV: Emma Carter

Two days later, Vanessa dropped a travel itinerary onto my keyboard.

"Denver. Tonight."

I read the client name and felt my hands go cold.

Martin Russo.

Everyone in our industry knew the stories. He preferred young women in client-facing roles. Complaints followed him from firm to firm. Settlements happened quietly. Careers ended even more quietly.

"I need another associate on this trip," I said.

Vanessa leaned against my desk. "No."

"Company policy requires two employees for high-risk client travel."

Her eyes narrowed. "Are you quoting policy to me?"

"I'm asking for basic safety."

"Russo requested the analyst who built the European model. That's you. This is a fifty-million-dollar account. If you refuse, I'll document insubordination and terminate you before lunch."

I stood.

"Then document that I asked for a second employee."

Her smile vanished.

I carried the itinerary straight to Adrian's office.

His assistant tried to stop me. I went in anyway.

Adrian sat behind his desk reading a quarterly report.

I put the itinerary in front of him.

"Vanessa is sending me to Denver alone with Martin Russo."

He looked at the page.

"I know."

My pulse stumbled.

"You approved it?"

"She cleared the travel with me this morning."

"You know his reputation."

"I know he is difficult."

"Difficult? There are harassment complaints."

"Unproven complaints."

I stared at him.

"Adrian, he corners women. He requests junior staff because he thinks they can't push back."

His jaw tightened. "This is a major account. You're the analyst he requested. Present the data, stay professional, and get the signature."

"Send someone with me."

"That looks weak."

"To whom? A predator?"

"Keep your voice down."

"I'm your wife."

He glanced toward the frosted glass wall.

"And right now, you're an employee asking to be removed from a critical assignment because of gossip."

My chest went hollow.

"If he tries something?"

Adrian picked up his pen.

"Stay in public areas. If he crosses a line, call me."

I waited for him to look ashamed.

He looked annoyed.

Seven hours later, I stood in the lobby of the Denver Grand Hotel wishing I had walked out of Northstar that morning.

Dinner had been useless. Martin drank scotch, ignored my presentation, and asked whether I always dressed so conservatively when traveling with clients.

When I tried to end the meeting, he put his hand on my lower back.

"The lounge is this way," I said, stepping aside.

His hand followed me.

"Too loud. We'll use my suite."

"No. We can finish in the lobby."

His fingers closed around my wrist.

"Don't play games, Emma. Your boss sent you here because he wants this deal."

I pulled back.

"Let go."

He yanked me toward the guest elevators.

Panic hit so fast I tasted metal.

"Get your hands off me."

"Stop making a scene."

I reached for my phone.

Martin slapped my hand away and twisted my arm behind my back. Pain shot through my shoulder. My heel caught in the carpet, and one shoe came off.

"Help!"

The corridor was nearly empty.

The elevator chimed.

The doors opened.

Martin tried to drag me inside and ran straight into a man stepping out.

Ethan Cole.

I recognized him immediately. Everyone did.

Founder of Cole Capital. Ruthless investor. Adrian's most dangerous competitor.

Ethan's gray eyes moved from my face to Martin's hand around my wrist.

His expression changed.

"Mr. Cole," Martin said quickly. "This is a misunderstanding."

"She said no."

Ethan's voice was quiet.

Martin tried to laugh. "We're negotiating."

Ethan stepped forward and shoved him away from me.

Martin hit the wall hard enough to lose his breath.

"Touch her again," Ethan said, "and the next negotiation you have will be with your lawyers."

Martin's face went pale.

"You don't understand—"

"I understand exactly what I saw. Leave."

Martin left the contract on the carpet and hurried toward the lobby.

My knees nearly gave out.

Ethan caught my elbow without pulling me closer.

"Are you hurt?"

"My wrist. I think it's okay."

He took off his overcoat and held it out rather than draping it over me without permission.

"May I?"

That small question almost broke me.

I nodded.

He settled the coat around my shoulders.

"Do you have a room here?"

"I haven't checked in."

"Good. You're not staying on the same floor as him."

He picked up my fallen shoe, then the abandoned contract.

"This is evidence now. Keep it."

I looked at him.

"Why are you helping me?"

"Because you asked a man to let go and he didn't. That is enough."

He walked me through a side exit to a waiting town car. Before I got in, his attention dropped to the bruises forming around my wrist.

"You should photograph that tonight. And ask the hotel to preserve the security footage."

I swallowed.

"Northstar won't want a complaint."

"I didn't ask what Northstar wants."

His tone was blunt, but not cruel.

"I saw your name on the European models before your company sent them out for financing review," he added. "Version metadata. You built them."

I stared at him.

Vanessa had spent days pretending I was invisible. Adrian had helped her do it.

Ethan had noticed my name in a file.

"Adrian knows too," I said.

Ethan went still.

"Adrian Bennett?"

I should have stopped there. Instead, exhaustion and shock stripped away my caution.

"My husband."

His eyes sharpened.

I closed mine.

There it was. Three years of secrecy, gone in two words.

"He approved this trip," I whispered.

Ethan was silent for a beat.

Then he opened the car door for me.

"Get in. I'll have my legal team contact hotel security before that footage disappears."

I looked up at him.

His face had gone hard.

"And Emma?"

"Yes?"

"If your husband knew the risk and sent you anyway, the problem is bigger than Martin Russo."

The door closed between us.

For the first time, I stopped asking myself how much more I could endure.

I started asking what would happen if I simply refused to endure any of it again.
