Stripped at the Gala, Claimed by the Billionaire Investor

POV: Emma Carter

I returned from Denver with a bruised wrist, preserved hotel footage, and one clear decision.

I would document everything before I made my next move.

Ethan's legal team had helped the hotel secure the corridor video without contacting Northstar. I saved a copy to my private drive beside the version histories from the merger models.

Adrian texted once while I was at the airport.

Did Russo sign?

Not Are you safe?

Not Did he hurt you?

I did not answer.

Monday morning, Northstar's forty-second floor looked as if nothing had happened. Catered pastries covered the breakroom counter. Executives gathered for the annual promotion meeting. Vanessa wore cream silk and acted like Denver had never existed.

I stood near the back of the conference room.

Adrian took the podium.

"This year has brought record growth," he said. "That success comes from people willing to perform under pressure."

I almost laughed.

"For the vacant Senior Financial Analyst position, I'm pleased to announce Chloe Davis."

Applause filled the room.

My stomach dropped.

Chloe was Vanessa's cousin.

She had been at Northstar less than a year. She had never led a major model. She had left the office at five while I worked through the night on the European merger.

Vanessa turned just enough to find me in the crowd.

She smiled.

I walked out before the applause ended.

On the thirtieth floor, I went straight to HR.

Sarah Lawson, the director, took one look at me and closed her office door.

"I assume this is about the promotion."

"I want my performance review."

She hesitated, then pulled a folder from a drawer.

Vanessa's signature appeared at the bottom of every page.

My metrics were strong. My utilization rate was the highest on the team. My models had generated the best accuracy scores in the division.

Then I reached the narrative assessment.

Employee demonstrates poor emotional control with high-value clients. During the Denver assignment, Ms. Carter's conduct contributed to the loss of a potential fifty-million-dollar contract.

I read it twice.

"She used the assault against me."

Sarah's face tightened.

"Vanessa's report says you abandoned negotiations."

"Martin Russo grabbed me and tried to drag me into an elevator."

"Do you have a formal incident report?"

"I have security footage."

That changed her expression.

"Emma—"

"Did you know Russo had complaints before Vanessa sent me?"

Sarah looked away.

That was enough.

"Show me the travel risk review."

"I can't disclose internal HR communications."

"Then preserve them. Every email. Every note. Every warning tied to that trip."

"Are you threatening legal action?"

"I'm telling you not to destroy evidence."

Sarah reached for the folder before I could leave.

"Emma, wait."

I looked back.

Her voice dropped. "I can't give you internal emails, but I can tell you the travel assignment raised concerns before you left."

"From whom?"

"I can't answer that without counsel."

"Then send a preservation notice yourself. Today."

She studied me for a moment, then nodded.

"I will."

"And add the performance review, the travel approval, and every message about why I went alone."

"All right."

I took out my phone and sent her a short email while I was still standing in front of her desk, summarizing the request. She replied, Received.

That two-word response steadied me more than sympathy would have. For once, the record would exist before Vanessa had time to rewrite it.

I took my evaluation and went upstairs.

Adrian was alone in his office after the meeting.

I dropped the review on his desk.

"Explain this."

He looked down and immediately knew what I meant.

"Close the door."

"It is closed."

"Emma, I saw the report this morning."

"And promoted Chloe anyway."

He stood. "Vanessa framed the Denver trip as a failed client engagement. If I overrule her written evaluation and promote you, I invite questions about favoritism."

"I was assaulted."

"I know."

The words stopped me.

"You know?"

His gaze dropped to the bruise visible beneath my cuff.

"You told me he crossed a line."

"No. I didn't. I never called you. You never asked."

His face changed.

He had exposed himself without realizing it.

"Vanessa told you," I said.

"She said there was an incident."

"And you still let her write this review."

"I am trying to manage the company."

"By punishing me for surviving something you approved?"

He came around the desk.

"Give me one quarter. I'll create another senior role."

"No."

He stopped.

"What?"

"I'm done waiting."

"Emma, don't be dramatic."

"Three years is not drama. It's a pattern."

I laid out the facts, one by one.

"You hid our marriage. You let Vanessa take my work. You sent me alone with a client you knew was dangerous. You let her use that attack to block my promotion. Every time I ask you to choose between my dignity and your image, you choose your image."

His face reddened.

"I have responsibilities you don't understand."

"I understand them perfectly. They just matter more to you than I do."

"You are my wife."

"You told me I wasn't, not in this building."

He flinched.

I set my keycard on his desk.

Not my resignation. Not yet. I needed one final copy from the server and one final event on the company calendar.

The charity gala was Friday.

Vanessa had spent weeks making sure I knew she would be standing beside Adrian in front of the board and the press.

I wanted to see exactly how far he would let her go when everyone was watching.

"What is that?" Adrian asked, looking at the keycard.

"A warning."

"About what?"

I picked it back up.

"That the next time you ask me to wait, the answer will still be no."

I left him standing behind his desk.

At my workstation, I opened the Northstar server and downloaded the final version histories tied to the three largest projects I had built over the last three years.

My name appeared in every development log.

Then I printed my resignation letter, signed it, and placed it in my desk drawer.

Friday night, after the gala, I would decide whether Northstar ever saw me again.
