Chapter 1 of My Boyfriend Stole My Mother's Last Goodbye to Play Groom for His First Love

CHARLOTTE'S POV

The call came while I was standing in the Bayside General parking lot, rain hammering the asphalt so hard it bounced back up to my knees.

At 5:50 p.m., I answered. "Charlotte? It's Denise, from Ashford Memorial." The night nurse's voice was steady in the way that meant it wasn't. "Your mom's numbers dropped about an hour ago. The doctor thinks she may only have a few hours where she's lucid. If you can get here tonight, you should."

"I'm coming," I said. "I'm two hours out, but I'm coming."

I'd driven over that afternoon to pick up her transfer referral, the one that was supposed to move her to a better oncology unit next week. Now the envelope was going soft in my hand, the ink on the top page already bleeding blue.

I texted Gabriel that Mom was dying and I needed the car, then called him at 5:52.

It rang once and stopped. I hung up and called again. By the twelfth try, his name filled the call log.

I ran for the far corner of the lot, where we always parked the car we shared. The car that had been his before it was ours. He'd borrowed it while I was inside, promising to bring it back before six. My shoes filled with water halfway there.

The spot was empty. Just a wide, black puddle catching the light from the lamppost.

I stood there with my coat soaked through to my shoulders, staring at it like the car might reappear if I waited long enough.

My hand found the keychain in my pocket. A little silver house, scratched from years of being dropped on counters. Four years ago, I'd sold my Corolla to cover his staff's payroll when the restaurant was a month away from closing. He'd pressed his spare key into my palm that night and folded my fingers over it.

"Whatever happens," he'd said, "I'll drive you to see your mom myself. You'll never have to worry about getting to her. Okay?"

I called him again. Voicemail.

"Gabriel, please. Mom is dying. I just need you to drive me."

I finished the message, hung up, and called again.

Fourteen. Fifteen. The first two calls had stopped after a single ring. Had he looked at the screen and pressed the button? Everything after that went straight to his recorded voice telling me to leave a message.

Sixteen.

For three weeks, he'd been leaving his phone face-down on the kitchen table. Business events at night, he said. Investors. When I asked where, he'd kiss my forehead and say I'd be bored by the details.

Tonight was supposed to be the big one. The investor dinner that could fund the second location.

I lowered the phone.

I didn't know why I opened Instagram. Maybe some part of me already knew. Audrey's name sat at the top of my feed with a pulsing red LIVE badge.

Audrey Bellamy. Gabriel's college girlfriend. The one he still called "an old friend" with a little smile he probably didn't know he made.

I tapped it.

An arch of white roses filled the screen. Audrey stood beneath it in a strapless gown, mascara running, her hand pressed to her mouth. A man off-camera was saying the groom hadn't shown up. Guests murmured. Someone said, "Oh, honey."

Then a man in a navy tux walked up the aisle and put his arm around her.

I knew that tux. I'd bought it for him in March, on a credit card I was still paying off. I knew the lapel pin too, a small gold anchor I'd found at an estate sale and spent twenty minutes deciding on because he grew up on the water.

Audrey turned her face into Gabriel's chest. He rubbed her back and said something that made her laugh through her tears.

The comments scrolled past in a rush of hearts. "He came for her!!" "Real love shows up."

Seventeen. I called him one more time and waited for the beep.

"I know today is important to Audrey. But my mother is still alive, Gabriel." My voice cracked on the last word. "For now."

Both ride apps showed no drivers. A cab dispatcher said the flooding had stopped out-of-town bookings.

The bus station was a fifteen-minute run. I made it in ten.

"The 7:40 to Ashford?" I asked the woman behind the glass, sliding my card under the window.

She winced. "Delayed. Flooding on the interstate. They're saying maybe an hour, maybe more."

"Is there anything else? Anything going that way?"

"That's the last one tonight, sweetie. I'm sorry."

I bought the ticket anyway. I sat on a plastic bench under buzzing fluorescent lights and called Ashford Memorial over and over, refreshing my call log between tries like it could make the line pick up faster.

At 8:31, my phone rang.

"Charlotte." Denise was talking quietly, like she'd stepped into a hallway. "She woke up. About twenty minutes ago, at 8:10. Just for a minute or two."

I stood up so fast the bench scraped. "Is she awake now? Can you put the phone to her ear?"

"She's unconscious again, honey. I'm sorry. But she said your name. She asked if you were here yet."

I pressed my fist against my mouth.

"Tell her I'm on my way," I said. "Even if she can't hear you. Please tell her."

"I will."

The bus finally pulled out at 9:15. My ticket was a wet, wrinkled square in my hand. I watched the wipers fight the rain for two hours and didn't let myself close my eyes once.

We were rolling past the Ashford city limit sign when the phone buzzed again.

"Charlotte." Denise didn't need to say anything else. I heard it in the way she took a breath first. "She passed at 10:52. It was peaceful. You were the last person she asked for, Charlotte. I'm so sorry."

I didn't answer. I couldn't find a single word. The man across the aisle looked over, then quickly looked away.

When I pushed into her room, the lights were dimmed. Her hospital bracelet still circled her wrist, her name printed in neat black capitals. I took her hand. It was already cool, cooler than the metal bed rail I was gripping with my other hand.

On the bedside table sat a ball of navy yarn and two knitting needles, stuck through half a scarf. Blue. My favorite color. She'd told me on the phone last week it was a surprise.

I sat down beside her and didn't move for a long time.

At 11:40, my phone lit up with Gabriel's name. His first message all night.

Swamped tonight. Let's talk tomorrow.

That was it. No question mark. No "is everything okay." I'd made seventeen calls, and that's what he sent back.

My thumbs moved anyway. Mom's gone. I need you to come get me, I

A notification slid down over the half-finished words. Audrey had posted a photo.

It was taken in front of a chalkboard sign that read Our Vows in looping white script. Gabriel was slipping a ring onto her finger. In the next frame, he was bending down to kiss her.

Her caption: Sometimes the man meant for you is the one who stays.

I zoomed in on her hand until the pixels blurred.

An antique diamond in an old rose-gold setting, with tiny milgrain edges. His grandmother's ring. The one he'd shown me in its velvet box two Christmases ago and said, "This is yours. When the time's right, this goes on your finger and nobody else's."

I stared at it until the screen dimmed in my hand.

"You promised you'd be there when I needed you," I said to the empty room. "I guess you meant her."

I deleted the message, letter by letter, until the box was blank again.

Then I picked up the scarf. One stitch at the edge had come loose, a little tail of yarn hanging free. I wrapped it around my fingers and held on.

Behind me, wheels squeaked across the floor. A nurse was rolling the heart monitor away from Mom's bed, its screen black now, its cords looped and silent.

In my lap, my phone lit up again.

Audrey had posted a new video.

The Wedding That Was Always Meant to Be.
