"I am fine, Mom," Sophie answered, chewing loudly. "Why?"
"Your father said you were sick."
Silence stretched over the line. "I am just watching a movie."
I hung up. I dialed David's number. It rang once before routing straight to voicemail. A text materialized on my screen a second later.
Client present. Call you tomorrow.
I triggered the screen recording function on my phone. I captured his call rejection, the timestamp, and his text message. I routed the video directly to the encrypted folder housing Vanessa's audio logs.
I walked through my front door twenty minutes later. The foyer smelled sharply of antibacterial soap. David stood in the kitchen, aggressively scrubbing a clean coffee mug under the faucet. He had washed off his cologne.
"You look cheap," David said, slamming the mug onto the granite counter. His eyes locked onto my mouth. "Smudged lipstick. Moving fast to prove a point, Nora? Is that what you are now?"
"I am following the paperwork," I said, tossing my purse onto the stool. "Your contract lacks a cooling-off period."
"You did this to punish me."
"I did this because I wanted to," I corrected him. "There is no hidden clause stating the husband gets to fuck someone else first."
He marched across the kitchen. He reached out, attempting to wrap his arms around my waist to force an embrace. "We are still married, Nora. Act like a wife."
I shoved both hands hard against his sternum. "A marriage license is not physical consent. Do not touch me."
David stumbled back a step. His face drained of color, then flushed a dark, furious red. I had never denied him physical contact in eighteen years.
The next afternoon at 3:00 PM, I exported the final cut of the documentary test. The timeline rendered perfectly. I closed the laptop, confirming I still possessed my career. Then I confirmed I still possessed myself.
I booked a suite at the Mercer Boutique Hotel. I texted the address to Eli.
At 4:15 PM, a heavy knock rattled the hotel room door. I pulled the handle back.
Eli stepped inside. He carried the metal Northstar film canister. He dropped it onto the entryway console and took a step back.
"Are we discussing the pitch?" Eli asked, his tone guarded.
"No David tonight," I told him, flipping the deadbolt. "I have three rules. Listen to them."
"Tell me."
"No photos," I said, stepping onto the rug. "No staying the night. And if I say stop, you stop immediately."
Eli kept his hands at his sides. "Do you want the lights on? Do you need ten minutes alone to decide if you actually want this?"
"Keep the lights on," I said. "And stay exactly where you are."
I reached up to my collar. I unbuttoned the top button of my silk blouse. I unbuttoned the second. I did not leave my choices up to his interpretation.
I walked across the carpet. I stopped two inches from his chest, grabbing his wrists and guiding his hands directly to my waist.
"Kiss me," I said.
Eli leaned down, his mouth pressing hard against mine. The heat of his palms burned through the thin silk of my shirt.
"Tell me what you want, Nora," he whispered against my jaw.
"Take this shirt off," I commanded. "Touch my breasts."
He pushed the fabric off my shoulders, letting it fall to the floor. "Fuck," he swore softly, his fingers tracing the curve of my collarbone.
He backed me up against the floor-to-ceiling window. The glass felt freezing against my bare spine. I grabbed his shoulders, pulling him flush against my chest. My left hand pressed flat against the back of his neck. The thick gold of my wedding band dug sharply into the soft webbing of my own fingers.
"Stop," I said.
Eli froze instantly. He did not sigh. He did not negotiate. He stepped backward, putting two feet of empty space between us. He reached for the thin white blanket folded at the end of the bed and draped it over my bare shoulders.
He did not ask if I was thinking about David.
I pulled the gold ring off my finger. I walked over to the nightstand and dropped the band into the empty glass. It hit the bottom with a sharp, resonant clink.
I turned back to Eli. I let the blanket drop to the floor.
"Now continue," I told him, grabbing his wrist and pulling him back to the cold glass. "Fuck me, Eli."
"Say my name again," he demanded, his hands gripping my hips.
"Eli," I said.
An hour later, I lay on the mattress staring at the ceiling plaster.
"Do you regret it?" Eli asked. He sat up beside me, resting his arms on his knees. He did not try to pull me into a possessive hold. He did not claim me.
"I regret waiting eighteen years to say exactly what I want and do not want," I answered, my voice cracking.
A tear slid down my temple, soaking into the cotton pillowcase. I wiped it away. I did not cry out of guilt or betrayal. I cried because someone finally listened to my instructions without treating them like a debate.
At 11:45 PM, I sat up and swung my legs over the side of the mattress.
Eli pulled a clean white dress shirt from his leather duffel bag and held it out. "Your blouse lost two buttons against the window. Wear this."
I slipped my arms into the oversized sleeves. He did not offer a soft plea for me to stay until morning. He respected the boundary I set at the door.
"Do you want to ride home alone?" he asked.
"Yes," I said, buttoning the shirt halfway up my chest.
Seven minutes later, I sat in the back of a rideshare. The streetlights flashed through the tinted windows. I looked at the rearview mirror. A dark red mark rested clearly on the left side of my neck. I stared at the bruise. I did not adjust the collar to hide it.
I pulled out my phone and typed a message to David.
I will be home at 12:20. Do not wait up.
At 12:19 AM, the car pulled up to my driveway. The tires crunched over the gravel. Every light on the first floor blazed through the front windows, cutting through the dark yard.
I pushed the front door open.
David sat rigidly at the dining room table. The six-page open marriage contract lay flat in front of him. Next to the document sat three glossy, freshly printed photographs of Eli and me walking into the Mercer Boutique Hotel.
Sophie sat on the bottom step of the staircase, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees.
She stared at the digital timer on her phone screen, the glowing numbers flashing exactly one minute remaining.
