Chapter 1 of Six Months Open, His Old Friend Chose Me

For eighteen years, I believed David and I survived because we always chose each other.

Twelve years ago, I left the editing room I loved, emptied $86,000 from my premarital account, and helped build his company while raising our premature daughter.

He used to sit beside Sophie’s incubator and promise I would never carry our family alone.

By our eighteenth anniversary, his company was thriving, our daughter was seventeen, and I thought the worst years had bought us something solid.

Then David placed six printed pages beside my untouched champagne.

The rules were painfully specific: no overnight stays, no lovers at home, no questions about names.

I signed, then added one sentence in red ink: If either spouse falls in love, the marriage may end immediately.

Sophie watched me cap the pen.

“Maybe Dad just wants someone who actually appreciates him.”

“Sophie, this is between your mother and me.”

“No, David, you made sure it wasn’t.”

“Then sign it, Nora, and prove you’re not afraid.”

"Move the briefcase, David," I said, sliding the silver cake knife engraved with the number eighteen to the exact center of the dining table. "It is taking up the space where my anniversary gift should go."

David adjusted his cuffs, his gaze fixed on the leather handle of his bag rather than my face. "Let us skip the theatrics tonight, Nora. I had a long day at the office."

"Eighteen years is a long time," I replied, keeping my voice even. "I thought it warranted at least a card."

Across the table, our seventeen-year-old daughter, Sophie, sawed into her steak. Her phone remained face-down next to her water glass. For the past five years, she had always recorded our anniversary toasts for her social media followers. Tonight, she did not even reach for the camera.

I picked up the chilled bottle of champagne. As I tipped the neck over David's glass, my sleeve brushed the small cardboard box sitting at the edge of the console table. Inside sat my old employee badge. Twelve years ago, I walked out of my job as a documentary editing director, transferred $86,000 from my savings into David's failing startup, and listened to him swear on Sophie's silver NICU bracelet that I would never carry the weight of this family alone.

Now, he covered the rim of his crystal glass with his flat palm.

"I am not drinking," David said. "And do not make tonight into a production. You have not done real editing work in a long time."

Sophie kept chewing, fully accepting her father's casual erasure of my entire career.

"I edited your entire promotional campaign last month," I reminded him.

"That was a favor," David dismissed, waving a hand. "Not a career."

I set the heavy green bottle down. The base thumped against the wood. "Then what exactly is tonight, David? Because nobody brought a gift, and nobody is taking pictures."

He unclasped the briefcase. The harsh scrape of printer paper against leather filled the dining room. He pulled out a stapled packet and slid it across the mahogany surface.

Six printed pages.

The bold header on the first page read: Six-Month Open Marriage Trial.

I stared at the black ink. "A trial?"

"It is an opportunity," David said. He leaned back in his chair, lacing his fingers together over his stomach. "To let each other breathe again."

I picked up the packet. The paper felt heavy, official. I flipped to the second page. The footer displayed a creation date from three weeks ago. Bullet points dictated the terms: no overnight stays, no bringing anyone to our house, no asking for names, and communication regarding the arrangement restricted to Sundays.

"You have been miserable for two years, Nora," David continued, his tone adopting a practiced, clinical sympathy. "You refuse to develop your own life. You hover around the house. This will force you to get out of your rut."

"So you drew up a contract to cure my depression?" I asked, scanning the third page. "How generous."

My finger traced a line on the third page. "Why is the approved hotel radius limited to three miles downtown?"

David shifted forward. His thumb clamped down over that exact paragraph, pressing the paper flat against the table. "It is a standard boundary. To keep things manageable."

"Manageable," I repeated, testing the word. "Like a project timeline."

"It prevents complications," he insisted.

"Maybe Dad just wants to spend time with someone who actually appreciates him," Sophie said.

I froze. My own daughter sat across from me, stabbing a piece of asparagus with her silver fork.

"You are unhappy every single day, Mom," Sophie said. "Dad comes home and you look at him like he already failed some test. Maybe this gives both of you a chance to be normal again."

The words landed too neatly. They did not sound like a teenager improvising. They sounded rehearsed.

"How long have you known about this?" I asked.

Sophie glanced at David before answering. It was quick, but I saw it.

"I did not know," she said. "Not exactly. Dad only said you two needed space."

David folded his napkin beside his plate. "Do not drag her into this. I asked for one adult conversation."

"You brought our daughter to the anniversary dinner where you planned to hand me a contract governing who I can sleep with," I said. "You dragged her in before I sat down."

Sophie pushed her chair back an inch. "Why do you always make everything sound ugly?"

"Because the page is ugly." I lifted the packet. "Who wrote it?"

"A lawyer reviewed it," David said.

"Which lawyer?"

"The name does not matter."

I turned to the signature page. His name was already printed beneath the first line. Mine waited below it, blank. A small yellow tab marked the spot where he expected me to sign.

"You prepared my signature page before asking whether I wanted this," I said.

"I prepared an option."

"An option does not arrive with a deadline."

I flipped back to page four. The trial would begin at midnight and end six months later at four in the afternoon. That was not a discussion. It was a launch schedule.

"Why four o'clock?" I asked.

David reached for his water. "The time had to be specific."

"And why does the confidentiality clause cover company employees?"

His glass stopped halfway to his mouth.

Sophie stared at her plate.

I set the contract down. "There is already someone."

"That is exactly the kind of accusation this trial is meant to stop," David said. "You turn every late meeting into evidence."

"Then show me your calendar."

"No. The agreement protects privacy."

"The agreement has not been signed."

His phone buzzed beside his steak knife.

David moved too slowly to cover the screen. A preview appeared in bright white letters.

Did she sign yet? I booked the room. —V

Sophie inhaled sharply.

I looked from the message to the hotel-radius clause beneath David's thumb. The three-mile boundary suddenly had an address.

"Who is V?" I asked.

David grabbed for the phone.

I got there first.
