Chapter 1 of After I Signed Away My Son, My Husband Learned I Was an Heiress

The clinic office smelled like bleach and old coffee. I sat in a plastic chair with my laptop balanced on my knees, watching the little wheel spin.

One more click. One more transfer. Seven years.

My hands didn't look like mine anymore. The knuckles were swollen. The nails were short and split. There was a rope scar across my right palm that hadn't faded in three winters. I pressed my thumb against it out of habit.

The screen flashed green. Payment complete.

I didn't move. I thought I would feel something. Relief. Joy. Something loud. But there was only the hum of the vending machine down the hall and the wet cough of a fisherman in the waiting room.

The door opened. Dr. Halden came in with a folder pressed to her chest.

"Autumn," she said. She didn't sit down. That was how I knew.

"How bad?"

"Vibrio. A rare strain. It's already in your bloodstream." She set the folder on the desk. "You need IV antibiotics. Specialized. We can't do it here."

"How much?"

She didn't want to say it. "Around eighty thousand. Maybe more. And you need to start within a few weeks or—"

"Or I die."

She nodded once. Just once.

I laughed. It came out short and dry, like something scraping the bottom of a bucket. Eighty thousand. I had four hundred and twelve dollars in my checking account. I had a truck with a bad transmission and a duffel bag of clothes that smelled like the ocean no matter how many times I washed them.

"I'll figure it out," I said.

She left me alone.

I opened the confirmation email to save it. My finger slipped. The intermediary's portal opened instead — the internal one, the one clients weren't supposed to see. I froze. Then I scrolled.

I don't know why I scrolled.

Maybe because for seven years I had wired money into that account and never once seen where it went. Maybe because the wheel in my chest had finally stopped spinning and something else needed to fill the silence.

The first page loaded. Walker Enterprises. Corporate filings. Revenue in the billions with a B. I blinked. I scrolled again. A profile photo of my husband in a tailored gray suit, standing in front of a glass tower with his name on it. Adonis Walker. Seattle's Wealthiest Man. Forbes, this year.

My stomach folded in on itself.

I clicked the debt file. The original agreement was there, scanned, my own signature at the bottom in the shaky handwriting of a woman who had just watched her son cry. Attached to it were two documents I had never seen.

An insurance appraisal.

A purchase receipt.

The vase. The priceless Qing dynasty vase Kye had knocked off the shelf when he was five, the one Adonis had held in shaking hands and whispered was worth more than our house. Purchased from a home décor wholesaler in New Jersey. Mass-produced. One hundred and eighty-seven dollars. Shipping included.

I read it three times.

I read it a fourth time.

Something very quiet happened inside me. Not a scream. Not a sob. A door closing, somewhere far down a hallway I would never walk again.

Seven years.

I thought about the freezing water off Neah Bay. The body I pulled out of the reeds last October, the girl who was younger than me. The night my regulator froze at forty feet and I clawed my way up praying I'd see Kye again. The fever dive. The 104 degrees. Whispering his name into the mouthpiece to stay awake.

For a vase from New Jersey.

I took out my phone. I opened the camera. I photographed the appraisal. Then the receipt. Then the corporate filings. Then the Forbes profile. Then Adonis's smiling face in the gray suit, once, twice, three times, from different angles, the way I used to photograph a body before we brought it up so the family would have a record of exactly where we found their child.

When I was done, I closed the laptop. I put it in my bag. I stood up.

My legs shook. Not from grief. From fever. I steadied myself against the desk, waited for it to pass, and walked out.

The drive to Seattle took four hours. I don't remember most of it. I remember the rain coming down in sheets on I-5 and the wipers dragging like they were tired. I remember not turning on the radio. I remember gripping the wheel until the scar on my palm burned.

The address the intermediary had listed for Adonis wasn't our old apartment. It was a private road in Broadmoor with a gate and a keypad. I parked outside and looked up through the windshield.

The house was enormous. White stone. Black shutters. A circular drive with a fountain. Windows lit gold against the wet evening. I had never seen it before in my life.

The side gate was unlocked. Of course it was. Nobody expected the corpse lady to walk up her own driveway.

I stepped inside the foyer and stopped.

The walls were covered in photographs. Adonis in a tuxedo at some charity gala. Kye — my Kye, taller now, jawline sharper, a stranger — holding a lacrosse trophy. A woman I did not know standing between them with her hand on my son's shoulder. She was smiling the smile of someone who belonged there.

I walked slowly down the hall. Every frame. Every mantel. Every polished surface.

I wasn't in any of them.

Not one photograph. Not a wedding portrait. Not a baby picture with me in it. Nothing. It was as if I had been carefully, patiently erased.

On a side table near the staircase, in a heavy silver frame, the three of them stood in front of a Christmas tree in matching cream sweaters. The woman's wrist rested on Kye's shoulder.

On that wrist was Diana Walker's bracelet.

My bracelet.

I reached out and touched the glass. My fingertip left a smudge. I stared at it for a long moment.

Then I heard footsteps on the stairs above me, and a child's voice I hadn't heard in seven years said, "Mom, is that you?"

He wasn't talking to me.
