Chapter 1 of She Fled the Alpha,And Found Her Fated Mate

Five years of being mated, and I stumbled upon the truth by accident.

In a moon-healer's den tucked behind the eastern ridge, I watched the Alpha who supposedly loved me more than life itself order two separate tinctures. One to protect a pregnancy. One to destroy it.

He had his arm wrapped around the beauty nestled against his chest, his voice flat and indifferent as he instructed his enforcers to prepare the remedies.

One of them hesitated. "Alpha Ashvane, you're willing to sacrifice the Luna's pup just so Seraphina Thornwick's child can inherit the bloodline. Why not simply take her as a second mate and be done with it?"

Fenris Ashvane kicked the warrior to the ground, his tone slicing through the room like a silver blade.

"Shut your mouth. And prepare extra healing tonics for recovery. If the wolfsbane leaves my Luna with lasting damage to her body, I will hold every one of you accountable."

His gaze swept over them, cold and absolute. The weight of his Alpha aura pressed down on the room like a physical force, thick enough to make the air tremble.

"Not a word of this reaches her. If anyone lets her catch even a whisper, I'll rip out their tongue myself."

No one dared speak again. They filed out in silence, shoulders hunched beneath the lingering pressure of his dominance.

Seraphina wrinkled her nose at the bitterness of the tincture. Fenris, a wolf so fastidious he recoiled from sharing a drinking vessel, pressed his lips to hers and fed her the remedy mouth to mouth.

He hadn't even finished half the bowl before his breathing turned ragged. He swept her into his arms and carried her into the back chamber.

The sounds that followed needed no explanation.

I clamped my hand over my mouth and fled, stumbling over my own feet in the dark. My inner wolf howled, a long, shattered sound that reverberated through every bone in my body. She clawed at the inside of my chest, writhing in agony, as though the bond itself had been set aflame. I could barely breathe past the pressure of her grief.

The Alpha who swore I was his only one had been tangled up with another Omega all along.

So be it. I would write him a Bond Severance Letter, sever this mating cleanly, and never see his face again.

——

I wandered the moonlit streets in a daze after escaping the healer's den, barely aware of where my feet were taking me. My wolf had gone silent inside me, curled into a tight, trembling knot of pain. She-wolves passing by stopped and stared, whispering with open envy.

"Look, that's the Luna of the Ashvane Pack. Alpha Fenris practically worships the ground she walks on. Declared her his one true mate before the Moon Goddess herself, and spent half his fortune building her a stronghold that rivals the Moonhall Citadel. I doubt there's a better Alpha in all the territories."

There was a time when hearing those words made me lift my chin with pride, grateful beyond measure for the mate the Moon Goddess had given me.

But today, every syllable was a claw raking across my heart.

The Alpha who treated me like I was his whole world had been lying with another Omega behind my back. Had gotten her carrying his pup. And the wolfsbane he'd been slipping into my tonics, moon cycle after moon cycle, had been stealing from me the one thing I wanted most. My wolf keened softly, a broken whimper that vibrated through my ribs. I pressed my fist against my sternum as if I could hold her together.

Blood rushed to my head. The cobblestones tilted beneath me. My knees buckled, and I dropped.

"Elara Dawnmere!"

A panicked shout. Then arms around me, catching me before I hit the ground. Through the haze, I caught his scent first: dark cedar and iron and something sharp like winter frost. It had once made my wolf purr with contentment. Now it made her recoil, snarling weakly. Fenris draped his moonthread cloak over my trembling shoulders, his eyes rimmed red as he barked orders for someone to fetch a pack healer.

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying on the furs of our mating den. The healer knelt on the floor, voice shaking as he delivered his report.

"Alpha Ashvane, the Luna suffered a severe shock. Her emotional distress triggered the collapse. The pup... the pup still holds, but barely."

Fenris frowned. "She was perfectly fine this morning. Why would she suddenly..."

He trailed off mid-sentence. His body went rigid, and something flickered behind his eyes. Panic, barely concealed. I could feel it through the bond, a sharp spike of fear he couldn't quite smother.

"Elara, the attendants told me you went to the healer's den today. I happened to be there on pack business." He paused, watching my face with those pale, searching eyes. "Did you see me?"

Beneath the thick wolf pelts, my fingers curled into fists so tight my nails bit crescents into my palms. My wolf pressed herself flat against the floor of my mind, silent and watchful, every muscle coiled. But I shook my head, keeping my expression blank.

"I got distracted by a spirit network broadcast of the Blood Moon Festival preparations on the way. There were shifting demonstrations in the square. I suppose the excitement was too much."

The tension drained from his shoulders. He pulled me into his arms, his voice soft with gentle reproach. "You're carrying a pup and still running around like a yearling. Do you have any idea how terrified I was when I caught your scent laced with fear and then saw you collapse?"

The concern etched into his features was so convincing it could have fooled anyone. His thumb traced slow circles on my shoulder, and his wolf rumbled low in his chest, a sound meant to soothe. Once, that sound would have melted every fear I'd ever carried.

He lifted a steaming bowl of tonic to my lips.

"Elara, the healer prescribed this to protect the pup. Drink it while it's still warm."

My gaze drifted to the empty herb packet on the bedside table. I recognized it instantly. The same dried wolfsbane leaves I had seen in the healer's den, ground fine and mixed with bitter root to mask the scent. The tincture meant to end a pregnancy, not protect one.

My nose stung. My vision blurred. Tears spilled down my cheeks before I could stop them, and deep inside me, my wolf let out a sound I had never heard her make before. Not a howl. Not a whimper. Something quieter and more final, like the last breath leaving a body. The mating mark on my neck throbbed with dull, aching heat, as if even the bond itself knew it had been betrayed.

He leaned in, alarmed, pressing his lips to my wet lashes. "What's wrong? Why are you crying?"

"It smells so bitter," I whispered. "I don't want to drink it. Please?"

I looked up at him, searching his face, waiting. Searching for anything, any flicker of guilt, any fracture in the mask. My wolf watched through my eyes, utterly still.

The Alpha who had never once denied me anything in five years of being mated let out a quiet scoff and shook his head.
