Chapter 1 of Ruining My Husband With the Dangerous Outcast

I shifted the heavy glass baking dish to my left hand, wiping a smudge of flour from my spotless pink vintage dress.

"Careful there, Mel," my mother-in-law, Susan, chirped from a nearby lawn chair. "Julian hates messes."

"I've got it," I told her, forcing a bright smile.

Five hours. That was how long it took to pit the cherries, simmer the filling, and weave the lattice crust perfectly.

Fifty of our closest friends and family milled about the backyard lawn, sipping mimosas and picking at catered hors d'oeuvres.

"Can I have everyone's attention?" Julian tapped his champagne flute with a silver spoon.

The chatter died down instantly. I stepped forward, holding the warm pie like an offering. Five years of marriage. This was supposed to be his grand toast to us.

Instead, my husband reached out and wrapped his arm around the waist of our next-door neighbor, Chloe Ashford.

"Thank you all for coming," Julian said, his voice projecting easily over the manicured hedges. "I have an announcement."

I froze on the flagstone patio. Chloe leaned into his side, resting a manicured hand over her flat stomach.

"Chloe and I are expecting a child," Julian declared.

A pin drop would have sounded like a gunshot. My fingers cramped around the glass rim.

"Julian?" I whispered.

He didn't look at me. He kept his gaze fixed on his mother, who had gone completely pale. "Melody and I are divorcing. It’s been a long time coming."

"Divorcing?" The word tasted like dry dirt. I took a step toward him. "You told me you loved me this morning."

"I didn't want to ruin the party prep," he replied smoothly. "But now that everyone is here, it saves me making fifty phone calls."

"Are you joking right now?" My brother-in-law, Mark, stepped out of the crowd. "Julian, what the hell is this?"

"Stay out of it, Mark," Julian snapped.

Chloe offered a pathetic pout, looking directly at me. "I'm sorry, Mel. We didn't plan for this to happen. The baby just... happened."

"You're my friend," I said to her. My voice didn't rise. It came out flat, hollow.

"And Julian is my soulmate," Chloe shot back, dropping the fake sympathy in a heartbeat. "He needs a real family. Not a housewife who plays dress-up."

Julian finally turned his cold, blue eyes on me. "I want you out of the house by tonight, Melody. Leave the keys on the counter. You're getting nothing."

"I built this house with you," I said.

"My name is on the deed." He took a casual sip of his champagne. "Pack your bags."

"You can't do this," I said, my chest tightening. "We share bank accounts. We share a life."

"I already emptied the joint accounts," Julian informed me, a smug smile touching his lips. "My lawyer filed the paperwork on Friday. You're broke, Melody. It's over."

"You planned this," I said. "You waited until today on purpose."

"It makes a clean break," he said. "Everyone knows now. No messy rumors."

My hands lost their grip. The heavy glass dish slipped from my fingers.

It shattered against the flagstone. A violent crack echoed through the stunned yard. Sticky, blood-red cherry filling exploded across the stones, splattering the toes of my white pumps.

No one moved. Fifty guests stared at the ruined pie.

I stared at the red stains on my shoes. A strange, sharp laugh ripped from my throat. Not a sob. A laugh. The sound scraped against my own ears, foreign and harsh.

Julian frowned, his jaw tightening in disgust. "Are you insane? Clean that up."

"Clean it up yourself," I said, kicking a jagged shard of glass toward his polished loafers. "You broke it."

"Melody, stop making a scene," Julian warned, stepping back to protect his shoes.

"You announce your affair at our anniversary party, tell me I'm penniless, and say I'm making a scene?" I asked.

"I'm telling you to leave before I call security to escort you off my property."

Before I could tell him exactly where to shove his champagne flute, a mechanical screech tore through the neighborhood.

Everyone turned toward the street.

The corrugated metal garage door of the house directly across from ours flew up with a violent rattle.

Kael Lawson walked out into the afternoon sun.

The entire neighborhood avoided Kael. He was a veteran who kept odd hours, never smiled, and ignored the homeowner's association entirely. We had lived here for five years, and I had never heard him speak a single word.

Today, he wore a black ribbed tank top smeared with dark engine grease. Faded scars marked his thick arms. In his right hand, he dragged a massive industrial sledgehammer. The metal head scraped against his concrete driveway, kicking up sparks.

"What is that lunatic doing?" Julian muttered, releasing Chloe's waist.

Kael didn’t look at the party. He didn't look at me.

He walked straight toward the curb, right up to Julian's prized silver Porsche.

"Hey!" Julian yelled, dropping his glass. It shattered on the grass, joining my pie. "Get away from my car, Lawson!"

Kael stopped by the hood. He rolled his shoulders back, gripping the long handle of the hammer with both hands.

"I said back off!" Julian sprinted toward the edge of the lawn, his face flushing red.

Kael swung the hammer up. His muscles strained against the black fabric.

With a brutal, deafening crunch, the iron head smashed into the center of the Porsche's hood.

Metal buckled instantly. Paint flew in jagged chips. The car's frame shuddered under the impact.

A piercing car alarm erupted, screaming through the quiet suburban street.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his face draining of color. "My car! You psychotic bastard, you ruined my car!"

Kael rested the head of the sledgehammer on the dented metal. He finally turned his head, locking eyes with Julian.

"It was blocking my driveway," Kael said. His voice was a low rumble, barely cutting over the wailing alarm.

"It's parked on the street!" Julian shrieked, pointing a shaking finger. "I'm calling the cops! You're going to jail!"

"Call them," Kael replied. He yanked the hammer free.

"You're paying for this!" Julian screamed.

"Send the bill to my lawyer," Kael said.

Then he swung again.

The windshield shattered inward into a million glittering pieces.

Chloe screamed, covering her ears. The party guests scattered like frightened birds, rushing toward the backyard gates and their own vehicles. Susan grabbed her purse and practically ran for the side fence.

I stood frozen on the patio, the sticky cherry juice seeping through my stockings.

Julian grabbed his phone from his pocket, his hands trembling so badly he dropped it in the grass. He fell to his knees, frantically digging through the manicured turf to find it.

Kael hoisted the hammer onto his shoulder. He turned his gaze away from the ruined sports car and looked past the manicured hedges, straight at me.

His dark eyes dragged over my pink dress, down to the shattered pie at my feet, and back up to my face.

"You need a ride?" Kael asked.

I blinked, the blaring alarm ringing in my ears. "What?"

"He told you to pack," Kael said, nodding toward Julian. "I have a truck. Get your stuff."

"You're out of your mind!" Chloe yelled from the porch, keeping a safe distance from the street. "Don't talk to her, you freak!"

Kael ignored her. He kept his eyes pinned on me.

"Five minutes," Kael told me. "Or I leave without you."

He turned his back and walked toward his garage, leaving the sledgehammer resting on the pavement next to the glass.

I looked at Julian. He was still on the ground, dialing 911, screaming at the operator about his Porsche. He didn't even care that I was still standing there. He didn't care about me at all.

"Melody, don't you dare go with him," Chloe snapped, crossing her arms. "He's dangerous."

I looked at the woman who had stolen my husband, then down at the ruined five hours of my life.

"So am I," I said.

I turned on my heel, ignoring the mess on the stones, and walked into the house to grab a duffel bag.

The front door slammed shut behind me, muting the car alarm, but a new, terrifying question echoed in the empty hallway.

What exactly was Kael Lawson planning to do with me once I got in that truck?
