Rejected Mate's New Beginning Summary

Chapter 1 of Rejected Mate's New Beginning

The warning sirens blared through Silver Moon territory, their piercing wail sending every wolf into high alert. I clutched the hand of a terrified six-year-old, pulling her along as we rushed toward the community center's exit.

"Luna Mabel, we need to hurry!" Delta James shouted from the front door. "The rogues are breaching the eastern perimeter!"

"I know, I know," I whispered, my voice steady despite the chaos. "We'll get everyone out safely."

My wolfless nature made me slower than the others, but I refused to leave any pack child behind. Ten years as Luna had taught me that protection wasn't just about strength—it was about courage and commitment.

"Emma, stay close to me," I instructed the little girl whose parents were deployed on border patrol. "We'll get you somewhere safe."

The community center was in chaos, children crying and pack members rushing in all directions. I counted heads quickly—thirteen children, all under twelve. Too young to shift, too vulnerable to leave behind.

"Everyone follow me!" I called out, gesturing toward the reinforced shelter at the back of the building. "Stay calm and move quickly!"

As we approached the concrete stairs leading down to the shelter, a blast shook the building. Plaster rained from the ceiling, and one of the windows shattered, sending glass shards across the floor.

"It's okay, it's okay," I repeated, though my heart hammered against my ribs. Where was Cooper? I reached for our mind-link, seeking that familiar warmth of his presence.

*Cooper, we need help at the community center. The children—*

My thought cut off abruptly as my foot caught on something—a backpack someone had dropped in the panic. I pitched forward, my arms windmilling uselessly as I tried to regain my balance.

"No!" I gasped, feeling myself falling.

The world tilted sideways. I hit the concrete stairs hard, tumbling down several steps before coming to rest at the landing. Pain exploded through my side and abdomen.

"Luna Mabel!" Emma screamed, her small face pale with shock.

I tried to sit up, but a sharp agony tore through my lower abdomen. Something warm trickled down my thigh.

"Stay back, everyone," I managed, though each word felt like glass in my throat. "Delta James will take you to safety."

I reached again for our mind-link, desperation coloring my thoughts.

*Cooper, please. I'm hurt. The stairs... I need you.*

Silence stretched for several heartbeats before his voice filled my mind, tense and distracted.

*Mabel, I'm sorry. There's an emergency at the pack hospital.*

Through our bond, I caught flashes of his surroundings—sterile white walls, the scent of antiseptic and blood.

"What kind of emergency?" I whispered aloud, though I already knew.

*Capri's wolf is in labor. Complications. Multiple pups at risk.*

The words hit me like physical blows. Multiple pups. At risk.

"I understand," I said, though I didn't. Not really.

*An Alpha must prioritize saving multiple lives over one,* Cooper's voice came through our link, formal and distant. *I'll come to you as soon as I can.*

The link went silent.

I lay there on the cold concrete, one hand pressed against my abdomen where pain radiated outward in waves. Above me, Delta James organized the children, leading them through a different exit.

"Luna, we'll send help back for you," he called down.

"Thank you," I whispered.

Alone now, I closed my eyes against the tears threatening to spill. Cooper had chosen Capri. Again.

Twenty minutes passed like an eternity. I drifted in and out of consciousness, the pain in my abdomen becoming a dull throb that spread through my entire body.

"Luna Mabel! Oh my goddess, what happened?"

Mrs. Edwards' concerned face swam into view above me. Her weathered hands gently helped me sit up.

"I fell," I said simply. "During the evacuation."

"The rogues?" she asked, her eyes scanning me for injuries.

"They're attacking the eastern border. The children are safe."

She helped me to my feet, supporting most of my weight as we moved slowly toward the pack hospital.

"Alpha Cooper is with Miss Capri," she said quietly, her disapproval evident in the tightness around her mouth. "Her wolf is having complications with the birth."

"I know," I replied, wincing as we navigated the final steps. "He made his choice."

As Mrs. Edwards helped me onto an examination table, I felt something shift inside me—not just physically, but emotionally. The pain in my abdomen was nothing compared to the hollow ache spreading through my chest.

"He should have come for you first," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion.

I looked down at my hands, noting the blood staining my fingers. "He's Alpha," I said mechanically. "He has to make difficult decisions."

But even as I spoke the words, something inside me cracked—a fault line opening in the foundation of everything I'd believed about our mate bond.

What kind of Alpha chooses another woman over his injured Luna?

What kind of mate abandons me when I need him most?

And why does it hurt so much more knowing he's helping her bring new life into the world when we've been trying for years to conceive?
