Chapter 1 of Raising the Dead Billionaire's Bastards

The clinking of champagne glasses filled my grand estate as I celebrated my twin sons getting into Harvard.

For eighteen years, I played the devoted, grieving widow.

I raised the illegitimate babies my husband left on my doorstep after he supposedly died in a fiery car crash.

But tonight, the grand oak doors swung open.

There stood my "dead" husband, Arthur, holding the hand of Clara—his first love, the true mother of the twins.

"Thank you for raising my boys, Evelyn," Clara smirked, leaning into his chest. "We couldn't have enjoyed our eighteen-year vacation if you hadn't played the nanny."

Arthur tossed a divorce paper onto the table, demanding his entire corporate empire back so they could be a real family.

They expected me to cry, to scream, to break down.

Instead, I picked up a pen and smiled.

"Smile for the cameras, Mother. You look too stiff." Leo muttered the words through clenched teeth, his arm heavy across my shoulders.

I held my champagne flute steady, facing the blinding flash of the press photographers. Tonight was supposed to be a triumph. My twin adopted sons, Leo and Julian, were headed to Harvard, cementing my eighteen-year run as the grieving, devoted widow.

"I am smiling, Leo," I replied softly.

"Try harder," Julian snapped from my other side, adjusting his silk tie. "People need to believe you actually care about us. Don't ruin our night."

A wealthy donor approached, raising his glass. "Evelyn, you must be so proud. Raising Arthur's boys after that tragic fire... you truly are a saint."

"They are my greatest achievement," I lied smoothly, tapping my crystal glass against his.

Eighteen years ago, authorities pulled two charred bodies from my husband's warehouse. The very next morning, I found two wailing infants on my porch. Arthur's illegitimate spawn. I took them in, played the martyr, and built an empire out of the ashes he left behind.

The heavy walnut double doors at the far end of the hall violently swung open.

They slammed against the plaster walls with a deafening crack. The string quartet screeched to a halt. A woman near the entrance dropped her plate, the fine china shattering against the marble floor.

Someone screamed.

I turned my head. My grip on the champagne flute tightened until my knuckles turned white.

Striding through the entryway was a ghost.

Arthur wore a custom-tailored charcoal suit, his silver-streaked hair styled perfectly. He looked older, sharper, but undeniably alive. Clinging to his arm was Clara, her skin glowing, a massive diamond catching the chandelier's light.

"Good evening, everyone," Arthur projected, his voice booming through the silent room. "Sorry we're late to the party."

Guests parted like the Red Sea. Murmurs of terror and confusion rippled through the crowd.

I didn't move. My pulse pounded in my ears, but I kept my chin high.

Clara detached herself from Arthur's side and strutted straight toward me. She stopped inches away, a sickeningly sweet smile on her painted lips.

"Evelyn," Clara purred, her gaze raking over my conservative navy gown. "You look exhausted. Running a company really ages a woman."

"You're supposed to be dead," I stated flatly.

Clara laughed, a high, grating sound that echoed in the cavernous room. "Oh, honey. Did you really think Arthur would burn to death in a warehouse? We needed an out."

"An out," I repeated, my voice devoid of inflection.

"Fifty million dollars goes a long way in Monaco," Arthur added, stepping up beside her. He adjusted his cuffs, refusing to meet my eyes directly. "We had to make sure the life insurance and offshore accounts cleared without suspicion."

Clara leaned closer, her perfume choking the air between us. "And we couldn't exactly drag two screaming newborns across international borders. So, thank you."

I stared at her. "Thank you?"

"For being the perfect, desperate little martyr." Clara reached out to pat my cheek.

I slapped her hand away.

She just smirked, unfazed. "You made a wonderful free nanny. Kept them fed, clothed, and educated while we enjoyed the Mediterranean. Look at them now—Harvard men!"

I turned to Leo and Julian. I expected to see horror on their faces. I expected them to reject the monsters who abandoned them on a freezing porch in the middle of winter.

Instead, Julian grinned.

Leo stepped out from under my arm, rushing past me. "Mom!" he yelled.

Julian followed, and both towering eighteen-year-olds threw their arms around Clara. She hugged them back fiercely, burying her face in their shoulders.

"My beautiful boys," Clara sobbed dramatically. "We missed you so much."

"We knew you'd come back for us," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion.

I froze. The ambient noise of the room vanished, leaving only the sound of my own heartbeat.

"You knew?" I asked, directing the question to the boys I had raised.

I wiped vomit off their chins. I stayed up for days when they had fevers. I built a corporate fortress to secure their trust funds.

Leo pulled away from Clara just enough to shoot me a mocking glare. "Dad contacted us three years ago. We've been talking every week."

"You really thought we considered you our mother?" Julian scoffed, crossing his arms. "You were just the bank. The placeholder."

"A placeholder," I echoed.

"Dad promised us shares in the real company once he took it back," Leo added, his tone dripping with arrogance. "You're just the hired help who kept the seat warm. We don't need you anymore."

The guests whispered furiously, pointing phones in our direction. The humiliation was designed to break me, to reduce me to a sobbing mess in front of the city's elite. Arthur wanted a spectacle. He wanted to show everyone that he was the mastermind and I was just the pathetic, discarded wife.

I looked at the four of them. A picturesque, reunited family.

No tears came. My chest felt hollow, scraped clean of the maternal guilt I had carried for nearly two decades. I had spent eighteen years chaining myself to a lie, pretending to love children who resented my very existence.

I turned toward the towering champagne pyramid. With careful precision, I set my glass down on the velvet-draped table.

Arthur stepped forward, breaking the family huddle. He reached inside his tailored jacket and pulled out a thick stack of legal documents.

He slammed the papers down onto the table, rattling the crystal glasses.

"Sign it, Evelyn," Arthur commanded, his tone hardening into a threat. "I want my company and my life back."
