Chapter 1 of My Husband Left Me in Prison for His Sister—So I Drained His Vaults for His Enemy

On the morning of my release, I put on the winter coat my husband sent four years ago. Luca had promised his lawyers would have me out in six months when he begged me to take the fall for his sister’s hit-and-run. I lied in court to protect them. Instead of Luca waiting at the gates, a guard handed me an envelope. Inside were signed divorce papers and a newspaper clipping of Luca’s engagement to another woman. My hands didn't shake. I walked out into the freezing rain, expecting to find no one. But a black car was idling by the fence. Matteo DeLuca—the deadliest rival of the Marino family, and the brother of the man I supposedly killed—stepped out. He didn't pull a gun. He held open the passenger door. "Your husband isn't coming, Elena," he said softly. "But I am."

***

The camel wool coat still smelled faintly of cedar and Luca’s expensive cologne.

Elena slid her arms into the sleeves, smoothing the fabric over her collarbones. It was stiff, preserved in a state-issued plastic bin for four years, but the embroidered Marino family crest on the inside breast pocket remained immaculate.

Inside that same pocket, her fingers found the folded piece of lined paper. The edges were worn soft from hundreds of sleepless nights.

*Six months, tops, and I’ll have you out. Trust me, Elena. You’re my wife.*

One thousand four hundred and sixty days. That was how long she had kept the paper pressed against her ribs. Four years of concrete, metal trays, and cold showers, carrying the blame for a midnight hit-and-run so the rising heir of the Marino family wouldn't have his record stained.

The heavy steel latch clicked. Officer Harris tossed a manila envelope onto the stainless-steel counter.

"Sign the release log, Scott," Harris said, not looking up from his clipboard. "Your ride isn't out front, by the way. Just an envelope couriered over an hour ago."

Elena stilled. Her hand paused inches above the logbook. "What do you mean? Luca said he was sending a car."

"Take it up with the mailman." Harris pushed the envelope toward her with a thick thumb. "Pen’s on the counter. You’ve got five minutes before the gate clears."

Elena picked up the envelope. Her name was printed across the front in sterile, black ink. No handwritten note. No familiar scrawl.

She broke the seal and pulled out the contents.

A standard legal document met her eyes first. The bold header seemed to suck the warmth out of the room: *PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.*

Elena turned the page.

There was Luca’s signature, sharp and arrogant, penned in his signature blue ink. It was dated three weeks ago. Attached behind it was a financial waiver relinquishing any claim she might have had to marital assets, citing abandonment due to incarceration.

Beneath the legal papers lay a glossy newspaper clipping from the city’s society section.

The headline was impossible to miss:

*MARINO DYNASTY UNITES WITH VANCE MARITIME: LUCA MARINO ANNOUNCES ENGAGEMENT TO BIANCA VANCE.*

The photo captured Luca in a tailored tuxedo, a diamond glass of champagne in one hand, the other resting possessively on the bare waist of a blonde woman whose diamond ring caught the camera flash. He was smiling—that easy, predatory smile Elena had once thought belonged only to her.

Her lungs clamped tight.

Four years. She had swallowed the threats of rival inmates, endured the strip searches, and kept her mouth shut while investigators tried to break her. She had given up her twenties so he could take his father’s seat at the high table.

And to him, she was just trash that needed taking out.

Elena closed her eyes. She inhaled slowly through her nose, drawing the sterile, bleach-scented air into her chest until the shaking in her fingers stopped.

When she opened her eyes, the fog in her head had cleared.

She picked up the ballpoint pen, scrawled her signature on the state discharge log, and shoved the divorce papers back into the envelope. She left the newspaper clipping face-up on the metal table.

"Have a nice life," Harris muttered.

"I plan to," Elena said. Her voice was flat, hollowed out of every scrap of warmth it had ever possessed.

The heavy outer doors buzzed, unlocking with a mechanical clunk that echoed in her teeth. Elena pushed them open and stepped outside.

The cold hit her first, followed by a relentless autumn drizzle. The sky was the color of wet concrete.

The long gravel driveway leading away from the facility was barren. No black Maybach. No private security team waiting to escort the boss's loyal wife back into the fold.

There was only a single, sleek black sedan parked across the access road, its hazard lights blinking through the rain.

The driver’s side door opened.

A tall man stepped out into the mist, ignoring the rain that immediately darkened the shoulders of his charcoal wool coat. He didn't wear an umbrella, and he didn't reach for the shoulder holster clearly outlined beneath his jacket.

Elena stopped at the bottom of the concrete steps.

She recognized the broad shoulders, the sharp, angular jaw, and the cold, predator’s eyes instantly.

Matteo DeLuca.

The man who had spent the last decade tearing Luca’s empire apart piece by piece. The Marino syndicate's greatest nightmare.

Matteo didn't move toward her. He stood by his open door, his hands resting easily at his sides.

"Elena," he said. His voice was deep, cutting cleanly through the hiss of the tires on the distant highway.

Elena didn't run. She held the envelope tighter against her side. "If you came here to put a bullet in Luca's wife, you’re three weeks too late. He already took care of it."

"I know," Matteo said. "I read the morning papers."

"Then why are you here?"

"Four years ago, a car ran down a man beside an unmarked sedan on the interstate bridge," Matteo said, taking a slow step forward. His dark eyes locked onto hers with lethal intensity. "The driver walked away. You surrendered to the police three hours later with grease on your sleeves and his keys in your pocket."

Elena’s pulse thudded against her throat, but she didn't flinch. "I served the time. The state called it vehicular manslaughter."

"The state called it an accident," Matteo corrected coldly. "The man who bled out on that asphalt was my younger brother."

A shock of cold ran down Elena’s spine. Her breath caught, and her boots shifted an inch backward against the gravel.

*Luca said it was a drifter,* she thought, the realization burning like acid in her stomach. *He told me it was a nobody with no family.*

"I didn't know," she whispered, the words scraping past her teeth.

"I know you didn't," Matteo said, his expression completely unreadable. "Julian was seventeen. Luca ran him down because he caught him taking photos outside a Marino shipping depot. Then he put you in a cage to make sure no one looked close enough to find out who was actually behind the wheel."

Elena swallowed hard. The rain soaked through her hair, dripping down the bridge of her nose. "Are you going to kill me, Matteo?"

Matteo almost laughed, though there was zero humor in his face. "If I wanted you dead, Elena, you wouldn't have survived your second year in cell block C. I kept you breathing in there because you were the only leverage that mattered."

He checked the vintage silver watch on his wrist, then looked back up the empty road.

"Luca isn't leaving you to start over," Matteo said calmly. "Two blocks north, sitting at the intersection of Route 9, there’s an unmarked van with three of his cleaners inside. As soon as you hit the county line on foot, you have an unfortunate overdose. No loose ends. No disgruntled ex-wives to ruin his wedding with the Vance heiress."

The air turned freezing in her chest. A cleanup job. From the very beginning, she was never walking out of this alive.

Matteo turned, reached out, and pulled open the front passenger door of his car.

He didn't order her. He didn't raise a weapon. He simply stood beside the open frame, leaving the choice suspended between them in the rain.

"You stay here, and Luca’s men will finish what he started four years ago," Matteo said. "Or you get in."

Elena looked down at the camel coat she was wearing.

She looked at the golden Marino crest stitched into the lapel—the badge of honor she had carried through four years of isolation, the symbol of her absolute, blind devotion to a man who had sold her life for a seat at the table.

She reached for the top button.

Without a word, without a tear, she unbuttoned the coat, pulled her arms from the sleeves, and let the heavy, soaked wool slip from her hands.

It dropped directly into a puddle of thick brown mud at her feet, the crest sinking into the filth.

Elena stepped over it.

She walked straight past Matteo, bent her head against the rain, and slid into the leather passenger seat.

Matteo looked down at the coat in the mud, a dark, dangerous spark flickering behind his eyes. He stepped to the door, leaning down to meet her gaze through the glass.

Elena didn't look at the prison gates. She didn't look back down the empty road where Luca had abandoned her.

"Drive," she said.

Matteo shut the door with a solid, airtight thud.

He rounded the front of the vehicle, got behind the wheel, and shifted into gear. The engine roared to life, and the black sedan surged forward, spraying rainwater across the gravel just as the distant headlights of an unmarked van rounded the bend two blocks away.
