Chapter 1 of No Longer the Obedient Wife

It was supposed to be our fifth wedding anniversary. But instead of roses or even a damn word, Armand Cavaliere—my husband, Naples’ most feared mafia heir—walked into our penthouse with his pregnant mistress.

I stood frozen in the hallway, the satin of my dress clinging to skin that had gone cold. He didn’t look at me. Not even a glance.

"Set up the guest room," he barked at the housekeeper, stripping off his coat. "Anabelle's been on her feet all day. She needs rest."

His voice was sharp, impatient—as if taking care of his lover was a burden he was nobly shouldering.

And then he turned to me like I was staff. Like I wasn’t the woman who'd once been his everything.

“Harriet. Get her a glass of warm milk.”

I blinked. “W-what?”

His gaze was already moving past me. “She needs calcium. The baby comes first.”

The baby. Her baby. The baby he was supposed to have with me.

Anabelle settled herself onto the couch like a queen finally taking her throne. Her hand grazed her belly, her lips curling in that same smug little smile I’d grown to dread.

I should’ve screamed. Cried. Anything.

But instead, I smiled—a tight, trembling thing—and turned toward the kitchen.

Every step felt like I was dragging my own body through concrete. The glass trembled in my hand as I poured the milk. My vision pulsed at the edges, head pounding with a rhythm too close to heartbreak. I pressed a palm to the counter, trying to breathe through it.

It wasn’t the heat. It wasn’t even the milk.

It was the end.

I walked back into the room, glass in both hands. Armand was laughing about something with two of his men, but Anabelle’s eyes were on me—waiting, calculating.

Then it happened.

The world tilted. A white flash of dizziness hit me like a wave. My hand jerked. The glass slipped.

Milk spilled, warm and harmless.

But Anabelle shrieked like I’d thrown acid on her.

“Ow! Oh God, Armand—it’s hot! My stomach—!” She clutched her bump, eyes wild, voice high and trembling.

I stood there frozen. “I—I didn’t mean—”

Armand turned. The second his eyes met mine, I knew I was done.

He stormed over. “You clumsy little disaster.”

“Armand please, I didn’t—”

Crack.

His slap came fast, cruel. It snapped my head sideways, and I dropped to the floor like glass shattering. My cheek stung. My ears rang. I couldn’t even cry—my body too stunned, too used to swallowing pain.

“She’s always like this,” he snarled to no one. “A pathetic wreck. Always making it about her. You want attention, Harriet? Is that it?”

Anabelle cooed from behind him, playing the saint. “Maybe she’s just… not well. Emotionally, I mean.”

Armand sneered down at me. “She’s always been weak. Useless. This—this is what I married? Look at yourself.”

I looked. At the floor. At my shaking hands. At the milk splattered like a cruel joke between us.

And in that moment, I felt it. The sharp, clean break of something inside me.

Not rage. Not revenge.

Just the quiet realization that I’d never be loved here again. Not by him. Maybe I never was.

I tried to breathe, to focus, but the walls spun around me like I was caught in some nightmare I couldn’t wake from. My vision blurred—light flared, then dimmed again. I blinked hard, trying to stay upright.

Rough hands grabbed my shoulders, jerking me up. My knees scraped the marble.

“Kneel,” Armand barked, voice low and vicious, dragging the words like venom. “Clean up your mess, like the damn servant you’ve become.”

I didn’t say a word. I couldn’t. My palms stung from the fall, knees throbbing, and dignity in ruins. But I moved, because in that house, under his roof, defiance meant punishment.

The warm milk was spreading slowly across the floor, a pale trail of shame. I dropped down, dress soaking in it, wiping it away with trembling hands like some broken puppet.

Behind me, Anabelle perched like royalty—her feet propped up now, a pillow beneath them like she was some delicate thing. Armand stood beside her, brushing her hair off her face, checking if she was alright. He didn’t glance my way. Not once.

“She’s pitiful,” one of the maids whispered, just loud enough for the others to hear. “Today was their anniversary, you know…”

“Shh,” another replied, “She’ll hear you. Poor thing doesn’t deserve this.”

I did hear them. Every word. And it only made the ache worse.

When I finally stood, swaying slightly, Armand turned his head just enough to sneer.

“You should’ve watched your hands, Harriet. Anabelle doesn’t need your clumsy ass putting stress on her and the baby.”

Anabelle leaned in, whispering something with a little smile tucked under her soft sigh, eyes dancing with satisfaction.

Armand tilted his head. “Now… you’re gonna say sorry.”

My heart stopped. I stared at him, stunned.

He stepped closer. “You deaf? Get on your knees again and apologize to her.”

My throat burned. I looked at him—searching his face, hoping for some flicker of the man who once held my hand and promised forever.

But there was nothing. Just that same blank disgust.

“I said—kneel.” His voice cracked through the room like a whip.

And my body gave up before my pride could stop it. I dropped to the floor again, fists clenched, heart screaming.

“I’m… sorry,” I whispered.

“Louder,” he snapped. “Don’t mumble like some pathetic mouse. Mean it.”

I raised my eyes to Anabelle. She looked back with wide, innocent eyes that didn’t fool me. Not anymore.

“I’m sorry, Anabelle,” I said, louder. “It won’t happen again.”

Armand laughed—low and bitter. “You can’t even hold a damn glass without messing it up. Useless. Always have been.”

The insults came like a hailstorm. “Weak. Soft. Deadweight. Can’t even cry right.”

I kept my eyes on the marble. I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of seeing me break.

But inside… something snapped.

This wasn’t love. It hadn’t been for a long time.

I didn’t cry. I didn’t shout. I just breathed.

And in that breath, I made myself a promise. After tonight, I’m leaving. And I swear on every scar he’s given me—I’m never coming back.
