Chapter 1 of My Son Died For His Mistress

My four-year-old son Noah lay bleeding on the stretcher.

The drunk driver dragged his tiny body for three miles.

I sprinted into the ER, screaming for a doctor.

Instead, I found my husband, Julian, standing by the blood bank.

He handed the last bag of Noah's rare Rh-null blood to the nurse.

"Give this to Clara. Her paper cut got infected, and she's anemic."

I lunged at him, begging him to save our dying son.

Julian shoved me to the cold tiles and tied my wrists with his leather belt.

"Noah can wait. Clara needs this now."

The flatline tone echoed from the pediatric ward.

My son died while Julian comforted his first love.

He didn't know I was the secret heiress of the hospital's parent company.

And I was going to tear his life apart.

Noah's blood was already soaking through my dress by the time the emergency room doors burst open.

I felt it first — the warmth spreading through white cotton, the wrong temperature of it, too hot and then already cooling. He was pressed against my chest, thirty-eight pounds of him gone completely limp, and the hospital lights hit us like a wall.

"He fell — glass table — I can't stop the bleeding — he has Rh-null, he's Rh-null, call Dr. Marsh—"

A nurse moved toward me from the triage desk. Another appeared from a side corridor, already pulling on gloves. I set Noah down on the gurney they wheeled forward, and my hands came away red.

That was when I saw Julian.

My husband stood at the nurses' station, fifteen feet away, jacket uncreased, hair combed, every inch the man who had walked out of our house two hours ago without saying where he was going. He held a blood bag in one hand — the sealed, labeled kind from the emergency reserve — and he was sliding it across the counter to a nurse I didn't recognize.

I saw the label from where I stood.

*Rh-null.*

The floor dropped.

"Julian." My voice came out wrong. Flat in a way I didn't recognize. "Julian, that's Noah's. That's his emergency supply."

He turned. His expression didn't shift. He looked at me the way he looked at invoices he planned to dispute later.

"Clara cut her hand," he said. "It's deep. She needs it."

Clara. His girlfriend. Who had a bandage on one finger.

"Our son is dying." The words came from somewhere I couldn't locate inside myself. "He is dying right now, Julian — he needs that blood or his heart will stop. In five minutes. The cardiologist told us five minutes—"

I moved. Both hands out, lunging for the bag.

Julian stepped into my path and caught my wrist. One hand, hard, the grip of a man who had spent years knowing exactly how much force to use and exactly where.

"Evelyn." The low register. The one he used to make me go still. "Stop making a scene."

"Let go of me—"

He didn't.

Behind me, someone was calling a code. I could hear boots on tile, the rattle of a crash cart, nurses shouting in shorthand. Noah was back there, somewhere behind me, and I could not turn around because Julian's hand was on my wrist and tightening.

Then I heard leather sliding through belt loops.

The belt came off in one smooth pull. He'd always been fast when he wanted to be. He grabbed both my wrists, looped the leather twice, and hooked the end to the metal bar of the IV stand beside the desk. The stand rattled. A bag of saline swung.

I yanked. I yanked again. The stand skidded but held.

"Sir—" A nurse's voice, uncertain. "Sir, you can't—"

Julian was already brushing a fleck of Noah's blood from the face of his watch with his thumb. He didn't look at her. He looked at me.

"She gets like this," he said. Flat. Explanatory. The voice of a man describing a recurring weather pattern. "You understand."

"My son needs that blood." Shaking now, my whole body shaking, and I could not stop it. "He has five minutes. Cardiac arrest. Julian — please — please—"

"Clara is waiting." He straightened his cuff. "And the blood is already allocated."

He picked the bag back up from the counter where the nurse had set it down, and he handed it to her again. Quietly. Firmly.

"VIP wing, room 412," he said. "Tell them it's from Mr. Sterling."

I screamed.

Not words. Something beneath words, beneath thought, beneath every lesson I'd ever absorbed about how to behave in a hospital, in public, in front of strangers. It came up from the floor of me and went out into the fluorescent light and bounced off the white walls.

Julian walked away without looking back.

I twisted against the belt until the leather cut into my wrists. I could hear them behind me — working, running, a machine reading numbers out loud — and I could not turn. Could not reach him. Could not do anything except stand there with my arms bound and the blood already drying on my dress and Noah somewhere behind me where I couldn't see him.

The red warning light at the end of the corridor went dark.

And the long, flat, merciless tone of a flatline monitor filled the room.
