At Sylvia's grave, Massimo arrives with a stranger at his side—and the bond I bled for was a lie. My mate used wolfsbane to fake our bond, and now, with Liv at my hip, this werewolf romance turns into a deadly hunt for the truth.

My Mate Used Wolfsbane to Fake Our Bond Summary

They buried Sylvia at 11:07 on a Thursday, and seven years of my life went into the ground with her—every soup, every translated blink, every night spent in a chair beside her bed. Then heels clicked behind me. Massimo, late as always, with four Thornvale warriors at his back and a woman I had never seen pressed against his side. My mate used wolfsbane to fake our bond. With Liv clinging to my hip, I am forced to face what that poison really bought him—and what it will cost us both. The bond I bled for was never real. The man I trusted built his lie on my devotion. Now the truth is loose in Thornvale, and it will not stay buried.

Chapter 1 of My Mate Used Wolfsbane to Fake Our Bond

The dirt hit Sylvia's coffin at 11:07 on a Thursday, and that was the exact second I heard heels behind me that did not belong.

I had my hand on Liv's small shoulder, keeping her close to my hip. Seven years of caregiving fit inside the box in front of me — every soup I spooned, every blink I translated, every night I slept in a chair with one ear tuned for her breathing. I had organized the burial myself. Ordered the wildflowers Sylvia liked. Written the eulogy on the back of a grocery receipt because I could not find real paper.

Massimo arrived late. He always did.

He walked up the gravel path flanked by four warriors in Thornvale colors — I knew the crest because Sylvia had made me memorize the regional packs during her stronger months. And beside him was a woman I had never seen. Tall. Dark hair braided tight against her skull. A cream coat too expensive for a funeral.

She stepped past Massimo before he could speak.

"I'm Bianca Thorne," she said, loud enough that every mourner turned. "Daughter of Alpha Reid of Thornvale. Luna of Ironridge."

She pulled the collar of her coat aside.

The mate mark on her neck was fresh enough that the edges still had that faint pearl-shine. A real one. The kind I had read about in the books Sylvia let me borrow. Not a raised welt. Not a knot of angry tissue. A clean crescent, blessed.

My hand went to my own throat before I could stop it. The scar there — my scar, the one I had touched every night like a rosary — felt suddenly too hot against my fingertips.

"That thing on her neck," Bianca said, tilting her chin toward me, "is a wolfsbane burn. Applied while she slept. The ceremony was performed by a rogue Massimo paid three thousand dollars in cash."

The gravel under my shoes tilted.

I turned to Massimo. Slow. The way you turn when you know the room is about to become a different room. I searched his face. I searched it hard. For a twitch. A denial. A flicker of the man who had once carried me across the threshold of the farmstead and told me the moon was ours.

He met my eyes and said, "That's correct."

Flat. Administrative. Like reading a lease.

Something inside my chest tore open along a seam I did not know I had.

"Massimo—" My voice came out thin. "Massimo, we have a daughter. Liv. Look at her — look at her, look at me, you were there, you were — "

"Silence."

Alpha tone.

It hit me the way a car hits a deer. Straight through the sternum. My knees folded before my brain caught up, and I heard my own voice fall back into my throat like a swallowed coin. My mouth kept moving. Nothing came.

And then — behind my ribs — something else moved.

A hot, frantic pressure. A thing waking that I had believed dead for seven years. My wolf. Not a voice. Not a name. Just a hard, terrified shove against the inside of my chest, like a hand slamming a locked door. Once. Twice. Then the sedative fog of the wolfsbane closed back over her, and she was gone.

But I had felt her.

Liv's small fingers slid into mine and squeezed. She had felt it too — the command pushing her mother down. Her jaw was set. She did not cry.

"Load her car," Massimo said to his warriors, without looking at me. "She and the child are off pack land in the hour."

The warriors moved toward the porch of Sylvia's house — toward the notebooks, the eye-tracking device, the whole quiet archive of seven years — and then two shapes stepped out of the neighboring homestead and planted themselves in the doorway.

Donald and Dahlia Owens. Him with his arms crossed. Her with a shotgun she was not raising, only holding.

"Sylvia's things stay where they are," Donald said, in that unhurried way of his. "Until the girl decides what leaves with her."

The warriors looked at Massimo. Massimo did not look back. He turned and walked away, Bianca's hand tucked neatly into his elbow like an accessory choice.

The pack watched. Not one of them spoke.

I got Liv into the back seat of the rusted Corolla myself. My hands did not shake until I closed her door. I loaded a duffel bag, three of Sylvia's notebooks that Dahlia pressed into my arms, and the eye-tracking tablet. Donald slid a folded envelope through my window — cash, I could feel the shape of it — and said only, "Don't come back till you can come back different."

I pulled off Ironridge land at 12:41.

Twelve miles out, at a gas station with one flickering bulb, I gripped the steering wheel until my knuckles went white and my fingers went to the scar on my neck by habit — by prayer — and I yanked them away so hard I hit the rearview mirror.

In the back seat, Liv watched me with steady, unafraid eyes.

"Mommy," she said, in her small, grave voice. "Where are we going?"

I started the engine.

"To your Uncle Casey."

The motel outside Casey's territory took forty-one of my forty-three dollars. I put Liv on the one bed with her shoes still on because she fell asleep before I could get them off. I stood in the bathroom under the fluorescent light and I looked at the scar. Really looked. For the first time in seven years I looked at it as evidence.

The edge was wrong. The tissue was wrong. It had never healed like skin — it had healed like a chemical spill.

Behind my ribs, the thing that had woken at the graveside stirred once more. Faint. Groggy. And it pushed a single word into my chest, not in language but in weight:

*Wrong.*

I opened Sylvia's notebook to a blank page. I clicked the pen. My hand was steadier than it had any right to be.

*Ceremony date,* I wrote. *Officiant description. Brand location. Sleep pattern that night.*

I did not know yet what I was building.

But I was building.
